Re: I find the Transmit audio is a bit muffled has anyone else found this?
Hi Mike,
The muffled audio is more likely due to the crystal filter passband rather than the mic amp. I've noticed this on another station myself. Moving the 12 MHz oscillator (BFO) up in frequency could be a solution to allow more high frequency audio modulation through the filter. The filter bandpass is centred on the lower side of the BFO. Scope for experimentation! Cheers, Gerard - VK2IO |

I find the Transmit audio is a bit muffled has anyone else found this?
I have 2 BitX40s one on 40 meters and the other is converted to 80 meters. I talk often with a group of amateurs on 80 meters mostly using a TS830s so they have a clear idea of my audio. When I use the BitX40/80 they say the audio is a bit muffled. I have 2 mics that I can use, one is a realistic CB mic that has an electret element in it and the other is an old dynamic mic that I have removed the dynamic element and substituted the electret element that came with the kit. I have recorded my own audio by transmitting into a dummy load and receiving on another rig, I have to agree the audio is a bit muffled on both rigs and with both mics. The realistic mic is a bit better than the converted dynamic mic. Now to the questions.
Has anyone modified the audio amplifier to improve the transmit audio quality? if so what did you change? Also I would like to increase the gain of the mic amp but as I am very rusty on my electronic theory I am not sure on how to go about it. All advise gratefully received. -- Mike VK3XL |

Software question, possible feature request
I have a mobile radio built that I do not intend to add a function button to. It is a radio that I want to keep simple and I don't want the user to be able to switch to USB or CW by mistake.?
I would like to be able to set the functions in the sketch by commenting, uncommenting or changing values so that the radio starts up with the same values/function settings every time. The settings that I would like to modify are VFO drive setting, LSB frequency offset and Scan range. Can I replace line 165 with int LSBdrive = 2;? ??? I found USB_OFFSET but did not find a LSB_OFFSET.? Can I calibrate LSB with a line of code somewhere?? Apparently it is offset using calibrate()? Can I replace line 195 with int TUNING_RANGE = 300; // tuning range (in kHz) of the tuning pot? ??? |

Re: Scan feature, need coding help
Just released raduino_v1.13 which includes the frequency scanning functionality as suggested by KC8WBK.
Many thanks Paul for this great idea! Download it from Apart from the scanning function some other improvements were implemented as well:

Re: Dead Display
The unit receives. So the tuning unit is working.
Can you adjust tuning and get variation in frequency? I suspect so since you say that both SSB and CW are working. Does the background light up? Does the display show a soft glow? If not, is it installed correctly? The proper orientation is covering the main board. The wrong orientation will have the display at 180 deg. from the main board. On the radiuno there is a blue pot. it is covered up when the display is installed correctly. This adjusts contrast. Disconnect power. Pull the display out and turn the pot all the way one way. Reinstall the display and power up the unit. The display will show two lines of blank squares or will be totally whitish from the background light. Do the same thing only turn the pot all the way the other way. The opposite thing will happen -- either all squares or all whitish. If you can get these things, all is well. Turn the contrast to all squares and back off slowly a little bit. The numbers and characters should then appear. Adjust the unit slowly until all is well to your eyes. The blue pot really should be installed on the reverse side. Then adjustment is easy. Now it is a bit of a pain as you must power up and down the unit for each adjustment. Mind you, it can be done with power on all the time, but it is a bit risky to do so as the display must be disconnected and reconnected all the time. john AD5YE |

Re: usb cable
it's true, some Nano clones have quality problems especially missing bootloaders or bad soldering, but looking on the price difference, less than 2€ including shipment from china against about 20€ without shipment for an original Nano, I always use the clones and ?order a bunch of them as spares. I never had one which I was not able to make it run. And even if one would be totally broken, just discard and take the next one for 1.70€.

I have also been using Arduino clones for years but the only two I have
ever had problems with, connectivity-wise have been those used on the Raduino
boards.
I have two HFSigs Raduino boards and both have very poor USB sockets.
They are very tight to plug into and also seem shorter than normal so more
of the plug is outside the socket so to speak.
As I said in my previous post, both worked after a bit of extra oomph was
given to get the plug to mate with the socket.
?
I also agree with you that the extra cost for HFSigs to use genuine devices
would make the project far more expensive.

it is, you can always cut out/desolder the cheap socket, buy a "real" Nano and a
quality socket, and reinstall it. I don't recall anyone having an issue with the
Nano itself or its socket. Also, I remember the genuine Nano was around $25. I
think I would be more disappointed if the BITX40 price jumped $20 than the fact
that a viable clone was being used.

My thoughts exactly.? The other night I got through a small pile up on W9IMS, a special event station, and was so happy with my $59 dollar wonder I was almost ready to sponsor my own dollar per voice QSO contest.

I have had a few Nano knockoffs that weren't happy with my system. However, running the drive app in the Drivers subdirectory has always fixed the problem after a reboot of the system.
