spectrum Techniques UCS-20 MCA for sale.

This is the Universal Computer Spectrometer (MCA) that I used for all my sodium iodide (NaI(Tl)), and proportional based MCA, Gamma Spec and XRF, and MCS work with since the beginning of GammaSpectrometry Group

It runs the same USX program (free) as does the UCS-30 but requires a 32 bit computer to work.

No the Alpha 6a looks at alpha spec you can even get a uranium Eprom for it

?thanks for the reply. I wasn't sure because the Eberline Alpha 6A ( not -opt1) with the same sensor has a 8 bit resolution for the energy peaks, so I was led to believe that it could detect the energy of an alpha particle.?
So infact the detector used in the Alpha 6A-opt1? can not resolve the energy of an alpha particle.
Would you happen to have the specs for the?
?Quantrad 500-PNC-BNC-Alum 1" sensor?

Peter,

A Continuous Air Monitor (CAM) detector is a bit different than the PIPS used for Alpha spec counting in that they have to operate in an air flow that can be pretty rough, humidity, corrosive atmospheres, etc so they are ruggedized by having an thin aluminum surface and a varnish over it to protect the silicon which also to prevents light from reaching it. A standard PIPS has none of this as it operates in vacuum chamber.?

The broadening of the FWHM with distance is due to the angular ray path but for a CAM that distance is fixed so you will be stuck with that FWHM. Varying the distance between the detector and source will, as you say, change the energy due to interactions with the air molecules. It will be seen as a long low energy tail from the peak energy and with increased distance a shift and broadening in the energy peak to lower energy.

Hi:
Please excuse my lack of knowledge. I am new to alpha spectrometry.?
Not having a selection of alpha check sources I was wondering if varying the distance between a detector and a check source would change the measured energy ? I made the assumption that the alpha particle would loose energy? through interactions with air during its travel to the detector. Another assumption I had was that interactions would broaden the measured FWHM of the measured peak? BTW I have an Eberline Alpha 6A-opt1, which? I believe has a?
?Quantrad 500-PNC-BNC-Alum 1" sensor,?but I can't find its specifications.?

I stumbled across and article:?? and inside figure 6 caught my eye. It seems that due to the detector construction of a PIPS, the closer the detector is to a source, the wider the fwhm gets. Would that also apply to the detector in the Alpha 6A-opt1?

Re: FOCUS: Alpha/Beta Counting (no spectrometry, just counting)

Serhiy, welcome to our little group of alpha-beta spectrometry.

Many of us here have the Eberline Alpha 6-1 head, which we intend to turn into an alpha spectrometer by snatching the signal and feeding it to our MCA spectrometers.

Please post or cross post your experiences with the Alpha-Counting controller to this thread.

Looking forward,

There are a couple of us that have these and they are great for Radon. It can also do Pu and U which may be useful in the future. There are some intricacies in setting it up to readout in pCi/l but we can send that info when you get it hooked up.

Good. My Eberline is a smaller one yet, noisy daiphram type and doesn't have the RAS-1 regulator on it. Part of an old 1" filter sampler and a 1" ZnS(Ag)/ 1"PMT/tray radon detector outfit.

Geo,

I originally had a GAST
pump but it over heated and would trip off. I put an Eberline RAS-1 pump on it
but it is maxed out at 25 LPM after start up at 32 lpm. I get a Filter error
with the Ultra metal filter holder using PTFE or glass 5211 filters but the
original Ultra filter works ok, but not for that price. It does report good data;
Rn Po214, Po214 Po218 and others so it’s doing its job fine. I’m trying figure
out how to get it to report Po-218 and Po 214 in DAC units (pCi/ml) to calc the
equilibration factor for the daughter plate in the room.

Get yours going it’s a lot
of fun watch room build up.

Here’s a good paper on calculating equilibrium factors using a

However does anyone know how to get the smart Cam to report Po 218

Po 214 in pCi/ml or DAC? All I can get is CPS.

JIGSAW PUZZLE PROJECT MODULES presently available

The Show2Me Counter boards with updates installed, minus the daughter CPU module are ready in limited quantities.

The V02 HVG/L (High Voltage Generator) with actual Ludlum supplied OEM transformers are ready, only 25 available

The PRE-3 stuffed boards are ready, as are the bare PCB for the bold.

We're putting together Experimenter Kits starting today, any member who was part of the JIGSAW project can ask for these as well as any member who has an experiment box in the works.

Advanced members who were not in the original design group may join at any time and contribute knowledge to the rest of us.

PLEASE BE AWARE:?These are never to be used in a commercial product or sold alone, they may be gifted to another amateur scientist if you are finished with them, they may be freely used as demonstration hardware in videos and print, but please credit GEOelectronics. They are a gift from GEOelectronics, to be used as non-profit educational and personal Physics experiment/ research tools. Any use of a module or instrument provided by GEOelectronics should be credited as such.

The?JIGSAW?PUZZLE PROJECT?is a series of modules we built, they stack together to for any number of rad-detection related tasks, GM tube, Scintillator, even Proportional tube, The main module is a 400 to 2500V DC HV Bias supply, the PRE-3 is a set of 3 cascaded preamplifiers on a single pcb, user selectable line up, and contains the master gain control, while the "Show2Me" Counter pcb does the control and readout functions.

There are other modules for special functions.

Each pcb is a circuit element, they are discussed separately as circuit elements on the JIGSAW chat groups.

"Systems Integration" group is the discussion of how to use the various modules into complete device, or to add one or more modules to an existing platform.? One member used his PRE-3 to replace the entire damaged-beyond-repair preamplifier in a Ludlum bench scaler!

FOCUS: Air Flow Regulators and Indicators

Found on eBay :Nice cheap airflow regulator and filter bottle $25 shipped.
RAP-1_with_Filter_Bottle-c.jpg

Clever Eberline design, balanced/bypass regulator allows pump to run at constant speed. Looks like it can control up to 4 CFM.

Some data attached, some of it within an instruction manual for a specific air flow detector, but same device used for all. There is a newer version Rap-3 which I am not familiar with. Something like this might be good for our current project and certainly for other such projects.

Not had experience with these detectors yet. 3 other units I have are both alpha and beta capable. The one I've looked into so far has a simple switch to change over for one to another, no schematic but the circuit seems to do nothing but change the bias level.

The other ones we have books for, so I'll dig into them, unless our collogue Alan has already, what say you Alan?

Here’s a run of 4.7 hrs using the cheap Chinese PTFE 47mm filter in an Ultra metal filter holder. Compare the spectra with Nicks run using Geo’s filter paper roll material. The PTFE has a very good peak shape compared to the roll material which has long tails and doesn’t separate the Po218 and Po214 peaks. Note also that peak ratio’s of the 218 and 214 on both are similar. ?Both show some Po212 at 8.78 and some beta or noise below 2 MeV.

I haven’t had any luck so far trying to run the Hi-Q filters as I get a filter error due to pressure differential. I’ll run the Ultra filter next for comparison.
