graded shield? 7
Hi: I am in the planning stage of making a graded shield. ( got 50 lbs of Pb flashing to start) Copper sheet or large diameter pipe is expensive. Sheet tin is also expensive, let alone tin pipe. I was wondering if an effective graded shield can made using a wound layer of Cu and Sn ? I was thinking of using a 4" OD pipe or similar as a form. Wind a single layer of stranded 10 ga Cu wire( it was recycled), and a thin paper separator layer, and then a layer of lead free solder Does anyone have any advice on whether or not stranded copper wire and also Pb free solder could be wound in a single layer to provide an effective graded shield ? For the inner most layer can a PVC pipe be used in lieu of a HDPE pipe ? P

Cosmic Ray Detector- a teaser. 13
It's time for Home Lab! Since the Geo-WX Weather Station reports heavy snow (and not much else), it's time to retire to the subterranium bliss of the Home Lab's balmy constant 66 degree (F) warm embrace.......rember our motto: "What Happens in the BASEMENT, STAYS IN THE BASEMENT!". Geo>K0FF

Welcome to "Nucleonics", the Home Lab detection and study of subatomic rays and particles. 3
This page has been initiated to provide for discussion of the detection and measurement of subatomic rays and particles from both radioactive and stable elements in the Home Lab environment. Here we will endeavor to design and lay out experiments that are geared toward the Home Lab operator, using safe, simple or inexpensive equipment for easy duplication. In some cases, we own VERY expensive equipment, but it has been obtained on the surplus market for very little investment. In all cases, we are dedicated to examining the highest level of science that can be accomplished in a Home Lab environment, while at once making the explanations and setups easily understood by High School students with the aid and encouragement of their Science/Physics teachers. Welcome
Let's give an "open" group a try for a change and back to the Q+A style. This one is open to all to see and join, and I hope we can attract responsible school age students and others who are interested in science and introduce them to our unusual hobby of radiation detection A.K.A. "Nucleonics". Have fun, Geo
