Lab IMPEX Systems slash ULTRA Energy SmartCAM Continuous Air Monitor ALPHA
It likes running with the smallest Eberline air/vacuum pump. It doesn't need a real "vacuum" to operate, just airflow.? Naturally the filter/sensor arrangement is set up to drawn in air locally, so a small "vacuum" pump is employed. to accomplish this.
Large color Touchscreen has buttons that bring up the different pages of reports on the present scan while the LOG button shows historical data and charts. Main buttons on the right are agile, you press what it says and get what it says, it will change what it says for the next screen. I just push it once and look at what comes up then push it again sees what comes up next. All the right hand buttons seem to do this.? I was looking for the Radon scree and found it this way. Picture dump is are camera shots of some of the various screens.

Re: CD V-700 max capacity with a pancake?
Loving the articles and so is a friend!
I finally?saw sparkling alpha scintillation from a DIY spinthariscope last night and the night before. Was such a victory. I used a small patch of autunite granuals as source, some little, broken pieces of autunite (natural, unprocessed but relatively hot ore, calcium uranyl phosphate). 1) The first thing that didn't work was using regular, copper-doped zinc sulfide (ZnS:Cu) for my phosphor. TechnoGlow sells a good such Halloween etc.powder and, in fairness, if you let its light-charged afterglow subside, it does glow from radioluminscence of autunite or thorium dioxide. But it doesn't scintillate like sparks. It dimly glows -- but it just releases its excitement energy too slowly so it doesn't flash or sparkle at all. It's like putting a capacitor across the leads to a needle gauge, smoothing out peaks. You can see the glow If you really, really have dilated pupils. 2) That's the other thing.. I can never see any of this, nor can a friend, even if we sit in darkness for 20 minutes. Instead we discovered we have to drink so much water we have to rise in the middle of the night to urinate. I make it to the area in the dark and then and only then are my pupils large enough to see any radioluminescence from these sources' activity levels. Huge difference, like I got eye drops at the optometrist. 3) Then? I got the phosphor meant for scintillation, the copper and silver-doped zinc sulfide (ZnS:Cu:Ag). Why it has no light charged afterglow when it is also doped with copper (in addition to silver) I have no idea... whether it's the addition of the silver allowing it to release the alpha-excitement energy faster, or if they quench the ZnS at different temperatures than the halloween stuff or what. But bottom line -- it flashes! 4) In addition to having late-night-rising pupils and the right phosphor, I had to have adequate magnification. I'm not sure of the value, but a low power will not do it. I have to use a thick and clear lens, or a higher power lens at a proper focal distance. The two that works were a pellet pistol scope sawed off, just using the far end at a number of cm away... or a very thick lens from a projector. Also, lenses that are made from the cheap, blue-green coke bottle glass dim the already faint, smaller sparkles and you don't need that. The uncolored, clearer the optics the better. What's banannas is I can't stop seeing what appears to be something other than 100% randomness. It must just be my brain tainting the observation. It's like I programmed an IC to make a totally random, few number of lights in a field to all flash at once in perfect unison at a frequency of 1/3 of a second. Then I overlayed about three of these sequences out of phase with each other. Not a pattern... but somehow not entirely random. It's weird. There's no way the atoms can syncronize with each other in any way is there? Into a finite number of phases in one matrix? Then there'd still be a random element from my perspective because they fire 360 degrees in tthree axes and I'm only observing a few degrees worth headed generally at me. Wouldn't that be a discovery? I'm sure they'd have already noticed. For now I'm chalking it up to my eyes and brain working at about 50 Hz and thus altering what's really happening the way an old film shown on an old TV would show helicopter rotors doing things they're not. |

HERE'S A LINK TO THO NEW HOME FOR MY ARTICLES: Geo From: "GlowFrog" <jeffburris@...> To: [email protected] Sent: Friday, August 20, 2021 12:33:06 AM Subject: Re: [Alpha-Beta-Gamma-Society] CD V-700 max capacity with a pancake? Thanks Geo, and I feel your pain of lesser serviceable things today... well, thanks first of all for the heads up regarding the thick window of the SI-8B. I thought it was closer to being an equivalent in performance to an LND like you'd see in a Ludlum 44-9 probe.? Since it's not, in respect to alphas, I think I won't go that route. Unless there is a cheaper alternative like some Soviet surplus that is rather like the LND 7317 or LND 7311 or something, then it looks like I need to try to either get a pancake probe with the real deal or get ahold of one and fashion my own. My objective is to be able to get approximately similar readings as other people with these popular probes and/or tubes in the back of modern $325 one-piece handheld counters like the GMC-600, so I might test my rocks and put them up for sale with an idea of what someone else will read. I mean, I can always multiply my end window reading x5 which seems rather consistent for uranium specifically, but... So two things that would help best would be: 1) anything I could use to know to build my own probe out of an LND tube (I don't really know the specs differences between the 7311, 7313, and 7317, or which is actually in a Ludlum 44-9, I just know it's "Ludlum OEM replacement part?01-5008) 2) any leads on the best price on an LND pancake tube... because for what they cost from Ludlum I periodically see a ready to go probe that was previously purchsed but shelved and never even used. 3) Especially anything on increasing the overall max capacity of the unit, like perhaps the x2 proceedure you mentioned! That's just what the Dr. ordered if I either get or make a pancake. I took that to mean a mod (with or without a new toggle switch?), unless you meant more just that the new calibration proceedure would simply lend itself to readings that were really 2x what the gauge says. Either way. I just know a pancake will peg the needle too often without such a mod. I do not yet have the slick GeoElectronics calibration box (pulse generator?) ... I do have Dr. Buggie's po boy calibration kit consisting of 6 pounds of rocks labeled with hot spots and values throughout low, medium, anfd high activity... 3K CPM thru 67K CPM?(as measured with a Bicron probe with a LND 7311 pancake on some fancy digital Ludlum meter), and duplicates of many values for consensus). So it's intended for helping with hobby, ballpark calibration (or at least the tweaking of little variable pots to one's satisfaction). I supposed there is this LENi approach, as well, of which I know very little but pictures. I suppose in this case one fits a pancake inside the chassis? Adding sound with the nice pcb you have is attractive. I don't know where any plans are for that... probably fairly simple but for one thing I am not sure what value or range of variable resistor to provide. I have lots of little speakers. I tried hooking a piezo transduce squealer up directly to existing the output and it was surprizingly audible. I would have thought the screw-on connector was the same between my Lionel CD V-700 and my so very similar (outwardly identical except for color) Victoreen 493. But the threads are different, LOL! The oldschool-to-1/8" jack adapter the physicist sent me with the Victoreen just isn't having the threads on the V-700. Either it's different or he cross threaded and sort of retapped the coupling. And just downright knowing my options for these historical, resillient, yellow beauties in case I want to procure one or two more V-700's and do something different with each. Data on refurbing and going solid state with the recitifier or HV sections. If you still have zip files, heck I'd store and read the whole historical archive, eventually. And with the new website going up I'd be happy to put up a section. I could do it on the new "wonders" site instead of the church one if it might alienate or falsely represent anyone. It will surely be up soon and surely be permanent (just like the church one since 2016) because it will be tied to my living no matter which way it bobs and weaves. I expect to be designing these woodwinds and talking software and theory etc. indefinitely. Just have been finishing making the products availbale first, which was 10 months of alpha, beta, and now unveling. Well, I've sent my prototype flute considered finished to my most tireless mentor and vet in the field, and if it gets the thumbs up I'll offer flutes to the public and swiftly finish an amiable website with items of interest both for prospective customers of my woodwinds as well as DIY'ers just wanting to make their own or maybe get help with acoustics software, with some articles. Radio inevitably edges its way into my content just as it does the ministry so geigers would nestle right in there if you're open to the historical archives being described and available (and you're welcome to back end Wordpress access, Geo). Heck if it started drawing bandwidth (like it seems it did at QSL, or was it just space) then I'd happily just up my server subscription because it would be good for my SEO. Thanks for anything you take time to make available! I can tell you I've gotten a couple of other people interested as well and I think it's a shame for any V-700 to go to waste when there's some geek out there that just hasn't been turned on about them yet.? I've never had more fun for a hundred or two dollars at a time! |

OK Jeff, which subjects to start with the articles etc. ?? Hi Jeff, neat call letters. This is George Dowell, "Geo" a.k.a. Ham Call K0FF. Definitely get a pancake probe. It will find thigs too weak to find with a metal probe and it will do it better than a thin end window probe too. Sorry the links are broken, QSL.NET asked me to remove all the non ham radio related stuff, as I was overloading thier memory allotment. To bad, I worked hard gathering and creating all those articles and manuals. Over the next few days I'll upload some of the pertinent pancake probe articles for you Jeff. We did a X2 hack on the LENi, which will work on any of the other common units of that era. That gives you twice the maximum CPM than normal. I'll also upload some other articles that explain a lot of the questions you have or I'm sure will have. Geo From: "GlowFrog" <jeffburris@...> To: [email protected] Sent: Sunday, August 15, 2021 9:59:15 PM Subject: [Alpha-Beta-Gamma-Society] CD V-700 max capacity with a pancake? Greetings and thanks in advance, Further below, I introduce myself and give a back story leading to here, but in case you're in a hurry to answer my main question I'll put it first. ? Question: I see GeoElectronics mod pictures with a CD V-700 GM counter utilizing a pancake probe, and I've even seen a rare, yellow probe on a Civid Defense unit that looked like a Ludlum 44-9. My main question is related to the fact that, in terms of CPM, the gauge on the unit is marked with a maximum of around 30,000 CPM or so on a scale setting of 100x. ? A pancake probe is easily going to want to count well into the 50's or 60's of thousands CPM with about a third of the rocks I'd like to share with others. ? So, if I use a CD V-700 with a pancake probe, will I simply have to settle for the unit pegging at 30,000 CPM or 50mR/hr (thus unable to measure a rock with 60,000 CPM) or can I modify and calibrate the unit to read higher? Perhaps calibrate the unit to a re-labeled needle gauge up to 120 CPM? Or maybe even just add a zero to each scale? ? Thanks for helping me get my bearings, and I'm so glad to have found out about the splash Mr. Dowell and associates have made in the world so that these fun surplus units may be so rewarding, versatile and useful. ? More about me and other unecessary details leading here: ? I'm Jeff from Florida, radio call sign W4VEY. I admit that's a vanity tag for now; I need to return for my General ticket or more. I jumped on that call while it was still available, since it looks like ¡°wavey¡± as in little, wavy electromagnetic lines. ? I became interested in the possibility of upgrading my standard-issue beta/gamma hot dog probe that came on my refurbished Lionel CD V-700 Geiger-M¨¹eller counter. ? I also have a Victoreen 493 with the thin mica end-window probe, which I've been enjoying, but I'd like to have a pancake on one or the other (maybe an SI-8B if not an LND) so I can take similar readings on rocks I share with others who often have a Ludlum 44-9 or similar probe. ? Besides being low on high budget funds, it's kind of scary when you see a Ludlum 44-9 for $150 because even if it's not broken it could be contaminated etc., so I like the idea of ? I started seeing lots of very cool things from GeoElectronics but was not sure where any centralized plans and knowledge repository was for Geo-mods so I asked a question to GeoElectronics on Ebay who kindly referred me here. I'm assuming that was Mr. Geoge Dowell; thanks to him. I assumed here was were to post, since another group is an archive (actually I just noticed a specific LENi group, too). ? I was going to scan the historical archives first, to not ask FAQ's, but I'm getting 404 not found errors from qsl.net via any of the links. If there are any downloads or materials I should access or download and absorb, I'm eager to do so as not to be the boring and repetetive noob. ? Thanks again!. Re: CD V-700 max capacity with a pancake?
Yes rocks are fascinating for sure. Si-88 are good for sure and they don't have the altitude limitations like the US pancake probes do. But the downside is they also don't have alpha particle radiation sensitivity. The reason for both those attributes is the very much thicker window material. Yep the early 60's cars were great to work on, I could climb right into the motor compartment with my toolbox, no problem.? Imagine how simple they were, no FM radio, seatbelts, 6 spark plugs, no emissions controls or other complictaed "improvements". And oh yes, the radiators were made of metal that could be soldered if it leaked. Just this last week I had a radiator split a seam in the side manifo9ld, which would have been a simple fix back then, but not today, it is made out of some space age plastic! SO naturally the whole thing had to be trashed and replaced. Bummer.? I'm just glad to get access to any plans, tips etc. I think it's just the cat's meyow that these units can be modified and refurbed, that there's info. on them... and getting up past my age, it's refreshing to work on something that's not all cramped and positively miniscule. The inside of these units remind me of my '64 Ford Falcon under the hood! |
Re: CD V-700 max capacity with a pancake?
Re: Test Samples
So I did a survey at work and found no radioactive sources, I did see a slightly higher background count than home. ?It was very similar to home level, and a fair amount lower than the figure I found for average US background count that I am not concerned. ?It would be interesting to hear what folks are finding for a background count. ?Mine was 0.07 uS/h. ?This was with the?Radiascan 701A in Gamma mode, with the sensor covered with only the plastic cover (No Beta shield)
One of the reasons I decided to do a survey at work was that one of the neighbors in the industrial complex handles dental equipment possibly including x-ray sources. ?Would this detector detect x-ray, I suspect that it would but am not sure. |
Re: Test Samples
That looks like a nice one Brian, we'll have you do an alpha particle test on the sensor one day. Those Russian tubes are really good plus rugged. Geo From: "Brian" <brian@...> To: [email protected] Sent: Saturday, January 30, 2021 1:21:56 PM Subject: Re: [Alpha-Beta-Gamma-Society] Test Samples Well I got the detector( Radiascan 701A)?and did a survey of the house. ?Some of the Lantern mantels from the 60s were indeed radioactive. ?I also found some green depression glass that was mildly radioactive. ?Next week I will do a survey of my work location, there are a few things I want to check out in the office/Lab.
