Re: Test Samples

Once I get the detector I'll check some of the mantels I found in my parent's house when I cleaned it out, maybe some of those are old enough to still be treated with Thorium. ?Kind of kicking myself, my Dad( He was an engineer, and built a Geiger counter for fun) had a box of radioactive items including a watch with radium dial, that I didn't keep.... Oh well, who knew I would get interested it this 10 years later. ?Now I will likely need to buy something to test the detector, I see that Amazon has Uranium ore for sale for not too much.

Re: Test Samples

Hi Brian, both of those are good ideas. Lantern mantles used to be made with Thorium-232 and old Fiestaware was made with either natural uranium (pre WW2 era) and for some time after WW2 with depleted uranium.

Uranium ore is another good sample because it still contains radium, which was effectively removed from uranium in the dishware.

New to the group, just ordered a detector and was wondering what folks use for test samples? ?Old Lantern mantles? Old orange Fiestaware?

Hello!

I'm new here and this seems like a small group, so I thought I would say "Hi!".

I'm hoping to meet folks that are learning more about geiger counters. I'm a science nerd and have enjoyed "learning by doing" with my geiger counter.
