For the air cores, I think it doesn’t matter. ?For the tandem core, I don’t know. ?For the big ones, I think they are all clockwise.

In which direction are the toroids on the ATU-100 to be wound?

Does not matter for a single winding, for multiple windings ON THE SAME CORE wind them all in the same direction.

ONLY the turns that pass through the toroid count.
An example, take a piece of straight wire and pass it through the toroid, , that is one turn, if you bend the wire so that the left hand side of the wire has come over the outside of the toroid and is now on the same side as the other end of the wire IT IS STILL ONLY one turn, it has to physically go back through the toroid centre a second time to count as a second turn.
Always count the turns on the INSIDE of ?the toroid, they are the ones that count.

I'm no expert, but my understanding is that you count the wire as it passes over the toroid. The ADX-UNO project has an instructional PDF with photos, and that is how they count them there. If I'm replacing something, I wrap it just as I found it.

When you're done winding, you'll have a wire exiting on the front, and a wire exiting on the back; count the wire as it passes over the toroid, including the pass as it leaves. Flip it over and the count will be identical. Some projects seem to ask you to go left-to-right or right-to-left, but I'm not sure that matters much. I always try to follow whatever the project says, since I don't know what I'm doing!

Re: Winding a tandem toroid #atu-100

Its quite straight forward, Daniel. Here's what I do.

Prepare a couple of RG59 (75R) centre signal wires with the insulation trimmed to act as the primary windings. This cable has a solid inner core and fits perfectly through the core with the secondary winding.

Wind the secondary turns on one hole of the binocular core, arranged so that when placed on the pcb the windings don't get caught between core and the pcb. Try not to cross the windings over each other and count ONE pass through the core as one turn. Once you have one of the secondary windings done hold them in place with one of the? RG59 inners passed through the hole thus holding the windings in place. then wind the second secondary winding through the second hole, fixng in place with the second piece of RG59.

VERY carefully burn off the insulation on the secondarys, scrape any smuts from the wire. Solder the primary windings first to locate the core then solder the secondaries. AFIK It does'nt matter the direction of the windings in this instance.

Re: Voltage regulator warm during programming

Well, after doing some reading and testing the programmer, I've come to
the conclusion that the programmer is faulty.

The Vdd pin appears to be constantly at 0.8V regardless of the power
setting applied in MPLAB IPE, which would lead to increased current draw
and explain the warm 7805.

Back to Amazon it goes!

"Matt Melling" <mattmelling@...> writes:

Hi David,

I did try that but got a message from MPLAB IPE that the circuit was
drawing too much current, although I did not measure the draw. I read
elsewhere about programming at a lower voltage so may try to see if that
works.
