Re: APRSIS32 Installed

Lynn W. Deffenbaugh

Jerome,

The APRSIS32.xml file located in the current directory when the .EXE is executed is the only configuration information for the program. Are you double-clicking the .EXE directly or using a shortcut from somewhere else? It may be that the shortcut is specifying a different default directory and an .xml file in that directory is giving you grief. Although, if that were the case, it wouldn't prompt you for a new configuration when you run it. The lack of a configured callsign is what does that.

If it were me, I'd just edit the APRSIS32.xml file with a plain text editor (Notepad works) and change the <OSM.Path> to something like:

<OSM.Path>.\OSMTiles\</OSM.Path>

Create a directory called OSMTiles in the directory along with the .EXE and .xml files and remember to only edit the .xml with the client NOT running. Otherwise your changes will get lost.

There's other parameters in the .xml that you can mess with and others that will completely break the program, so please edit with caution and save a copy of the pre-edited file! One of these days I'll get around to documenting what all is in there and what is safe to change.

Setting Lat/Lon in APRSIS32

Lynn W. Deffenbaugh

For those that recently downloaded the program, if the initial activation didn't get the Lat/Lon set correctly, you can edit the APRSIS32.xml that should be located in the directory containing the program. This must be done with the program CLOSED or you will lose your changes when the file is automatically re-written when the program exits.

Just put your preferred Lat/Lon in the <Latitude> and <Longitude> elements in decimal degrees. This means that if you're at 27 degrees 59.802 minutes, the number should be 27.9967 (27 + 59.802/60).

I'm happy for those to send me messages while on APRS, people can message me anytime on my callsigns I got listed, the ZR5BBL-1 is my laptop but ZR5BBL is my mobile.

You correct, its not touchscreen, my last one was and was driving me mad haha
As for directional keys, I think 2 for up, 8 down, 4 left, 6 right would be better, that way its able to pan around the whole map in any direction and leaving the zoom function intact?

Enjoy the transparency control. I fade out the maps when I'm focusing on stations and bring them up to full opaque when I'm trying to read the street names.
I don't know about interfaces for soundcard in wm. But "PocketDigi" works with the mic input.
I'll have to look that one up. Thanks for the pointer.
Can you put the information about the color of stations in the next incarnation of aprsisce.txt file?
Will do. That file is up for a renovation/update anyway. It's falling rather far behind. Especially if/when I get around to removing screen elements for disabled features (like all of the GPS "things" on Win32).

Which Windows Mobile platform do you have? There's no soft keyboard
that can get you arrow keys? If not, how do you type text? Even if
there's a small cursor moving rocker thing, that should generate
left/right and up/down.

I'll see what I can come up with. My personal issue with hover is that
I tend to just throw the mouse out of my active window and it distracts
me to know end to see a hover pop-up appear from underneath wherever it
happened to land. I understand the desire for window clarification, but
I still believe that it's only good for about the first 2 or 3 days of
usage.

I do plan to try to support AGWPE for SoundCard access. Given that
programs can access it via TCP/IP, I can probably support it from
Windows Mobile as well, but that would assume that you're actually
co-resident with the non-Mobile PC running AGW. Or is there a SoundCard
interface for Windows Mobile that I haven't heard of?

Correct. That's my primary focus, at least initially. You should be
able to use any serial TNC either via a direct serial port or via a
Bluetooth to serial adapter.

> The "+-" works different from other programms like Google Earth. In

Yes it does. I did a survey earlier on and it ended up tied. Just
think of + adding MORE stations to the screen and - displaying FEWER
stations. I think of the focus of APRS being the visible stations, not
the visible map. This may yet change in some future revision, however.

> What does the color of the station mean? Usually they are green, but

The color of a station in the scrolling list indicates how far they are
from the screen center. Green stations are probably not even visible
or are at the edges of the map. A station in red is very near or
actually at the center of the screen. Black stations have not yet
transmitted a position packet so APRISCE doesn't know where they are.
They typically don't have a symbol either.

I'm considering displaying RF-received stations in BOLD in the scrolling
station list, thoughts?

> Can you configure the programs to use metric instead of imperial units?

Metric display is on my ToDo list. As I see more non-US callsigns
actively using the program, the priority of that task will rise.

You're welcome and thank you for the well-thought comments and bringing
my attention to them! With enough feedback like this, we can make the
program better and better in more ways than I can think of independently.

If I remember correctly, the BlackJack is a SmartPhone that doesn't have

thinking about a menu option called View/Pan that will lock the

sound functional?

Keep up the great work!

Re: 2009/12/03 - New Release! - Station Tracking

Lynn W. Deffenbaugh

Dave,

Here's the filter text from one of my APRSIS32 clients (works on APRSISCE as well):

r/27.99673/-80.659072/1 b/N4GVA-2 b/AI4RI-2 u/APWW*/APWM*

That says only give me 1 (yes, ONE) kilometer around my home coordinates, but give me ALL of N4GVA-2 and AI4RI-2 packets. It also tracks all of the APRSISCE and APRSIS32 clients (the u/ filter).

You also need to connect to an APRS-IS server's filter port that doesn't previously filter out who you're trying to watch. I connect mine to port 14580 of rotate.aprs2.net. You set this up by manually editing the .XML file while the client is NOT running. Otherwise, your changes will get overwritten when you exit the client.

If that doesn't work, we'll try something more extensive.

Oh, and when you start getting packets for him, the map will not automatically move to where he is. You have to click on his callsign in the scrolling station list and select "Center" from the popup menu.

Lynn (D) - KJ4ERJ

PS. Just for the record, here's the filter from my APRSISCE client (KJ4ERJ-12):

b/N4GVA* b/KJ4ERJ* b/KJ4DXK* b/KJ4OVQ* s/@/@ u/APWW*/APWM* -b/WINLINK

N4GVA is an airplane tracker from Daytona
KJ4ERJ is of course all of my clients and trackers
KJ4DXK is my son
KJ4OVQ is my wife

Yes, I keep it all in the family!

Dave,

First, both the Windows Mobile and the Win32 clients expect an "always on" connection. They are first and foremost an APRS-IS (not RF) client and cannot get data without the Internet. With that said...

If you want to always receive a particular station's packets when you are connected and regardless of where it goes, you can add it as a buddy or a friend filter. The difference is whether you receive just that station, or the station and other stations within a specified radius of that station. The two filters would be added to the (blank delimited) Add Filter field of the configuration dialog.

As you can see below, the Budlist supports both wildcards and multiple calls in a single instance while the friend filter needs to specify the full call-ssid of the moving station along with a range in kilometers from that station's most recently beaconed position. You can even put a b/ filter for the call-* (all -ssids) along with an f/call-ssid/range filter for the particular -ssid you're most interested in. That way you receive any packets from the station before any position beacons have been received.

Finally, the client automatically adds an f/call-ssid/range filter using the configured range whenever you click on the station and select "Center" from the pop-up menu. The map will move to the center and will automatically move to the most recently received position of that station. This is very handy for just watching a truck go by on the local interstate, for instance, whereas configuring explicit b/ or f/ filters is good for when your son and daughter head out of state on a road trip!

The centered station is not remembered when the client is restarted, but the filter settings are, although you'd still have to find the station and re-initiate the Center action to get the map to track it after restarting.

From

#3 b/ Budlist filter

The budlist filter will pass traffic based on exact match of the sender's
call or call starts with a specific pattern (from V 1.4). Also the SSID is part
of the exact match.

Syntax: b/call1/p1*/call3/p2*...

Where: b = budlist command
call# = The prefix (starting) pattern
p# = The prefix (starting) pattern

Samples:

*b/SM5NRK * This will pass all traffic from SM5NRK
without any SSID
*b/SM5NRK-5/SK5UM * This will pass all traffic from SM5NRK-5
and from SK5UM
*b/K** This will pass all traffic from stations
starting with K
*b/SM5NRK/F* * This will pass all traffic from SM5NRK and
all stations starting with F

#11 f/ Friend Range filter

The friend filter works the same as My range filter, except you define which
call-ssid should be used (see more above). Up to 9 friend filters can be defined.
This is a moving filter so it follows the call-ssid last known position.

Note: This will not work until a valid position has been sent from the
call-ssid defined.

Syntax: f/call/dist

Where: f = friend range command
call = call to be used as center of the range
dist = distance in kilometers from lat/lon.

Samples:
*f/SM5NRK/500* This will pass all traffic within 500 km from
SM5NRK's last position.

1) Map display dragging! You can now drag the map anywhere you want in
addition to still centering on (and following) a specific station. The
filter is automatically adjusted to include the configured range around
the map center (r/lat/lon/range) in addition to the range around the
home (GPS on Windows Mobile) location (m/range). If you are centered on
a station, the range around that station is added to the filter
(f/call/range).

road trip!

The centered station is not remembered when the client is restarted, but
the filter settings are, although you'd still have to find the station
and re-initiate the Center action to get the map to track it after
restarting.

From

#3 b/ Budlist filter

The budlist filter will pass traffic based on exact match of the sender's
call or call starts with a specific pattern (from V 1.4). Also the SSID
is part
of the exact match.

Syntax: b/call1/p1*/call3/p2*...

Where: b = budlist command
call# = The prefix (starting) pattern
p# = The prefix (starting) pattern

Samples:

*b/SM5NRK * This will pass all traffic from SM5NRK
without any SSID
*b/SM5NRK-5/SK5UM * This will pass all traffic from SM5NRK-5
and from SK5UM
*b/K** This will pass all traffic from stations
starting with K
*b/SM5NRK/F* * This will pass all traffic from SM5NRK and
all stations starting with F

#11 f/ Friend Range filter

The friend filter works the same as My range filter, except you define which
call-ssid should be used (see more above). Up to 9 friend filters can be
defined.

I suspect I just missed it somewhere but how do I make the map track a
specific station, not mine since I don't have an 'always on' Internet

1) Map display dragging! You can now drag the map anywhere you want in
addition to still centering on (and following) a specific station. The
filter is automatically adjusted to include the configured range around
the map center (r/lat/lon/range) in addition to the range around the
home (GPS on Windows Mobile) location (m/range). If you are centered on
a station, the range around that station is added to the filter
(f/call/range).

Ok. But howto in Windows Mobile? I have not a wheel nor left/right keys.
Which Windows Mobile platform do you have? There's no soft keyboard that can get you arrow keys? If not, how do you type text? Even if there's a small cursor moving rocker thing, that should generate left/right and up/down.

I think "mouse-hover" is a good approach.
I'll see what I can come up with. My personal issue with hover is that I tend to just throw the mouse out of my active window and it distracts me to know end to see a hover pop-up appear from underneath wherever it happened to land. I understand the desire for window clarification, but I still believe that it's only good for about the first 2 or 3 days of usage.

I'm using a MFJ-1278 in a computer with Xastir and AGWPE+Ui-View in another one with Windows XP and a soundcard.
It will be good if you can use the soundcard and/or the bluetooth in both versions.
I do plan to try to support AGWPE for SoundCard access. Given that programs can access it via TCP/IP, I can probably support it from Windows Mobile as well, but that would assume that you're actually co-resident with the non-Mobile PC running AGW. Or is there a SoundCard interface for Windows Mobile that I haven't heard of?

Ok. I can connect the MFJ via bluetooth with the Windows Mobile device or with the desktop computer.
Correct. That's my primary focus, at least initially. You should be able to use any serial TNC either via a direct serial port or via a Bluetooth to serial adapter.

The "+-" works different from other programms like Google Earth. In Google "+" zooms in and "-" out.
Yes it does. I did a survey earlier on and it ended up tied. Just think of + adding MORE stations to the screen and - displaying FEWER stations. I think of the focus of APRS being the visible stations, not the visible map. This may yet change in some future revision, however.

What does the color of the station mean? Usually they are green, but some are black or red.
The color of a station in the scrolling list indicates how far they are from the screen center. Green stations are probably not even visible or are at the edges of the map. A station in red is very near or actually at the center of the screen. Black stations have not yet transmitted a position packet so APRISCE doesn't know where they are. They typically don't have a symbol either.

I'm considering displaying RF-received stations in BOLD in the scrolling station list, thoughts?

Can you configure the programs to use metric instead of imperial units?
Metric display is on my ToDo list. As I see more non-US callsigns actively using the program, the priority of that task will rise.

Thank you
You're welcome and thank you for the well-thought comments and bringing my attention to them! With enough feedback like this, we can make the program better and better in more ways than I can think of independently.

So "KISS ON" puts it immediately into KISS mode? But once there, I suspect it won't understand "RESTART" because it's looking for KISS packets?

I know the Alinco requires both "KISS ON" and "RESTART" to put it into KISS mode. And a 3 character non-printable sequence (I don't have it handy) to take it out. Is it possible the MFJ is similar?

change the from 14580 to 10152. You'll see TONS of stations

I've listed a pertinent part of APRSISCE.TXT from the Files section of
the web site below. It talks about the various corners of the screen,
but in a portrait orientation. If you have your View/Map/Wide checked,
the screen layout should match the description.

I'll see if I can maybe do a mouse-hover popup on them or something.
However, once you learn which is what, any sort of popup or hover would
simply get annoying. Read the text below and see if it answers your
questions. I don't include this file in the release zip because it's
right there in the Files section where you downloaded the .ZIP from.
And you probably only need to read it once...

I think "mouse-hover" is a good approach.

I JUST got the KISS RF feeding APRS packets into the screen within the
past 30 minutes. I've got too much hard-coded (like the BlueTooth
serial port name) to release it just yet, and I want to have RF
beaconing working as well. And I believe I need to support some KISS
setup/takedown strings for those foolish TNCs that don't remember to
stay in KISS mode when power is cycled.

Can you all drop a note describing your APRS RF station and particularly
the TNC you use and what it takes to enter and exit KISS mode? If you
tell me what it takes, you improve the chances of having your TNC
support on the first RF release of the program.

I'm using a MFJ-1278 in a computer with Xastir and AGWPE+Ui-View in another one with Windows XP and a soundcard.
It will be good if you can use the soundcard and/or the bluetooth in both versions.

Oh, and if all goes well, if you have a BlueTooth serial (rather than a
true RS-232 port or a USB serial) adapter to connect to your TNC, the
Windows Mobile version will also be able to do direct RF for those
SmartPhone users without Internet access.

Ok. I can connect the MFJ via? bluetooth with the Windows Mobile device or with the desktop computer.

>From APRSISCE.TXT in the Files section of teh Yahoo group (I have NOT
recently read this for accuracy, but it should be close).

Here are some notes about the other program features:

Double-Clicking the top center rectangle will show a series of message boxes
enumerating the connections configured on your device. This is for my
debugging lost connections. - Note that in some network situations, the
client may appear to hang for 30-60 seconds. You can access other
applications on your phone and APRSISCE will eventually recover.

Clicking an Icon in the center brings up a message box providing some data
about who/what that thing is including range (distance) and bearing, their
last known coordinates, and the time that information was received. The
"via" in the title is the name of the IGate that ported that packet to
APRS-IS.

The ± along the center of the left edge changes the zoom level for the
circle. If you have up/down buttons or a thumb wheel, they may also drive
the zoom. It defaults to 8 miles radius (16 miles across). Plus will
increase the viewable range (zoom out - show more) and minus will decrease
the viewable range (zoom in - show fewer). The icons will automatically
shrink if you zoom out really far.

The "+-" works different from other programms like Google Earth. In Google "+" zooms in and "-" out.

The upper left corner shows the "local" stations as they report in. You can
double-click any one of these to see the same information accessible from
the center circle.

What does the color of the station mean? Usually they are green, but some are black or red.

The upper right corner shows your speed and immediately under that is your
heading. Below that is an accumulated odometer. Double-clicking the
odometer will offer to clear it along with your current track (the black
line drawn in the center circle when you move).

The bars on the right are (from outside (right) to inside): current battery
state, number of track points accumulated, and number of stations stored.
If the station bar goes full range and red, it starts replacing the oldest
station. The program is currently built to hold
128 stations.

The box in the lower right corner shows the status of the GPS fix and the
bars along the bottom show the satellites in use and in view.

Above the satellites in the lower left corner is your altitude with
background color bars showing the vertical and horizontal DOP (dilution of
precision).

Above the altitude and below the ± bar is the current zoom radius in miles
or feet (with a ').

If you double-click a station that APRSISCE believes can receive messages,
you can send it a message. To send a message to any station, use Menu/Send
Message from the lower right corner. Select or key in the To: callsign and
enter your desired text. A pop-up will appear when/if you receive an Ack.

Received messages will be accessible in the upper left corner box
immediately below the scrolling incoming stations. Double-click it if it
goes green to read your messages and optionally reply.

Can you configure the programs to use metric instead of imperial units?
Thank you

Lynn,
?
I'm running APRSISCE for Windows Mobile on my AT&T Tilt 2 phone.?
?
?
I've done some basic experimentation and have only had it operating while mobile a couple times.
?
I have?at least gotten it?configured and feeding packets and location/telemetry data into the APRS-IS.
?
One thing I've found is that my?default zoom level was all the way out and I essentially have a?postage stamp size world map with?my tiny?icon in the middle.
?
For?zooming?I am not able to get anything to work via the?screen, but I can use the up and down keys on my physical slide out?keyboard to adjust the zoom.
?
The?red center?dot while mobile seems to move?randomly and wildly about at times.
?
Also I'm not?seeing any?other icons or stations showing up.??I have set to show all, do I need to explicity indicate stations that I'd like to see?? Or maybe I have something else configured incorrectly.? So far I seem to only have a one way connection out to APRS-IS,?and I'm not getting anything back.
?
One thing that would be helpful while mobile is a way to keep the sceen active/alive.? I've seen this setting on?other gps/mapping programs that I've used before and is helpful while mobile and not using external power and not wanting to change any other global screen dimming and power saving settings.? Also possibly a way to keep the program active and sending data when the application is minimized.? Right now I can only feed data if the application stays active, is maximized, and the sceen doesn't go to sleep.
?
Also I haven't figured out how to get?a short cut in my start menu or programs on Windows Mobile.? It would definetly be good to get that and the?missing application icon resolved for future installs.
?
That's what I have for now for some basic testing and interaction.? Is indeed fun to experiement with this additional option for APRS, and look forward to future versions and enhancements.? Also if folks have any other thoughts for my issues above, feel free to comment.

Thanks,

Ok, there's been quite a few new members of the group over the

Who of you is running APRISCE on Windows Mobile? And what
platform is

Who has dared the new APRSIS32 for Win32 and what's your opinion
of it?

Tell me what features you like, what you don't like, and what
drives you
crazy (like the slightest move while trying to click on the screen
ends
up moving the map and locking the center)?

I'd like to improve the product and move it towards becoming a
UI-View
replacement, so let me know what you'd like to see.

If all goes well, there should be a release soon that supports
KISS TNCs
for direct RF access as well! This will enable mobile IGate
operation
via your phone if you have either a real serial port or a
BlueTooth to
serial adapter on your TNC.

I can't make the program better if I don't hear what you'd like
difference!
