Commands for enter/exit KISS mode in MFJ-1278 TNC are: "KISS ON" and "RESTART" respectively.
So "KISS ON" puts it immediately into KISS mode? But once there, I suspect it won't understand "RESTART" because it's looking for KISS packets?
I know the Alinco requires both "KISS ON" and "RESTART" to put it into KISS mode. And a 3 character non-printable sequence (I don't have it handy) to take it out. Is it possible the MFJ is similar?

Yes, I thought I did. Ah, I see them now. I'll comment back on them on a separate reply.

I like both of them very much. The wm version solves a problem when
you have not a RF device or a digi ear you.
It will be good to have RF acess too, and the possibility of igate in
mobile or in fixed station.
Thanks for the comments and the platforms and the willingness to try
them both.
I just added the ability to transmit via a KISS TNC and now I realized
that I need to support a configurable path over which to transmit.
After that, I suspect I need to add configurable commands to tell the
TNC to enter/exit KISS mode for those TNCs that don't stick there across
power-ups (I know my Alinco TNC wants it). With that in place, it could
act as a receive-only IGate. Then I'll start tracking "local" "recent'
stations on the RF to enable a message-transmitting IGate from -IS to
-RF (3rd party packets). Wow, seems like there's a lot to do, but I
really want to get a version out for those interested in playing with
the RF side of things too!
