Jose. I'm on 28.148 also beaconing. So far I haven't seen you. Of
course the SFI is down today. Maybe later today if you're still on
you will show up here.
Not APRS related directly, but I know there are some weather minded folks and wanted to share a new website that I was pointed to via a different list for work.
In APRSIS32, create a new port of type Simply(KISS) and point it
via TCP/IP to your VARA HF instance's KISS port.?? Everything else
in APRSIS32 should "just work".?? As others have pointed out, you
do not need Direwolf because VARA HF is the equivalent
sound-card-based TNC/modem.

PS.? And it's best not to pirate an
existing thread but to start your own with a new subject.
The Pinpoint APRS app is easy to setup with VARA. I’ll send
you a few screenshots as soon as I get home.?

You can see the current settings by double-clicking the inner
narrow vertical bar on the right of the map.?? The top part of
that should include:
Close Stations
Using 56283 of 54112 Stations (Runs:549)
Age 80 to 120 (0) Minutes
Track Age 24 (0) Hours
Bulletins 48 Hours, TelemDefs 14 Days
Ignore the "Using" line as it is
obsolete, but my stations will begin fading 80 minutes after their
last received packets and will be removed 120 minutes after that.?
Any "buddy" stations will never expire (0).?? Tracks age out in 24
hours, but there also buddy stations never age out.?? Bulletins
last 14 hours and telemetry definitions last 14 days.
You set these in the XML file in the
following parameters:

PS.?
PPS.?? And having looked into this, I
found a formatting bug that's been there since the beginning.??
The Bulletins age displays the telemetry value, even though the
configured value is used internally.?? The Close Stations popup
display will be fixed in the next release.

James, I do WinLink on both 2M and HF. I do not use Direwolf or
UZ7HOSoundmodem. I run RMS and on 2M it brings up the VARA-FM modem.
Since I configured it that way. When I do WinLink on 10M then I tell
RMS to use the VARA-HF modem. I have used APRSIS32 but just recently
started using PinPoint. They both work fine.
This is the PinPoint APRS Settings that I'm using.
This is my PinPoint TNC settings.
This is what it looks like on the map. I was plotting Jose (EA8EE)
in the Gran Canary Is from my location on the Gulf Coast.
I had a 2 meter I-Gate set up
running Direwolf/Pinpoint.
I am in the process of
setting up a Alinco DR-135, and a dedicated antenna for APRS.
Not done anything on the HF
side, going? to setup up APRSICE, just have not got there yet.

Have you been able to use your VARA setup? You mentioned
2M. I assume you're using VARA-FM for packet? You do not
need Direwolf or Smartmodem. VARA-HF takes their place.
It is the modem you will send and receive APRS through.
Make sure your APRS program has the KISS port (8100)
setup.

Tony, although we didn't side-by-side compare the test today VARA
seemed to acquit its self nicely. I was running 80 W using a 10M
dipole about 15' AGL. We had one station in Newfoundland and another
in the Grand Canary? Islands and we were able to plot APRS. We had
another station in Missouri that I was not able to hear. I suspect
he was in my skip zone. What really shocks me is that VARA seems to
do nearly as well as fT8 does (although I know the FT8 bandwidth is
less than VARA). But AX.25 beacons I can see very well in the
waterfall and hear it clearly would not decode. So VARA does seem to
be able to dig the signals out of the noise.
I'm testing with another group that is trying to do the same thing
but with open-source software (FreeData). It is currently in alpha
but I'm impressed with what it is able to do so far. Hopefully Simon
will get it to a point where the modem can be used like VARA.
Interfacing with other apps.
Thanks for your graph, Tony. I hope we can get more VARA APRS users
up on 10M.
?VARA
was at least an order-of-magnitude better than AX.25
I
recently tested the performance of several APRS modems using
various HF path simulations.
Both
VARA and Robust Packet performed much better than standard 300
baud packet which is what you'd expect from robust modems with
error corrrection vs. those without.?
Nice
to have a reliable modem that just might resurect HF APRS.?

I don't know what PP is. I'm on APRSIS32 too. I have PinPoint on here but I started with APRSIS so I tend to just stick with it. OK so that grab was just Jose ACKing your messages?

I started out this session with PP and have switched to IS32. My PP messaging to Jose
was falling on deaf ears, apparently. Since switching over to IS32, messaging works.
And you’re seeing the results of successful messaging!
