Re: Vara aprs 10m

Tony, although we didn't side-by-side compare the test today VARA seemed to acquit its self nicely. I was running 80 W using a 10M dipole about 15' AGL. We had one station in Newfoundland and another in the Grand Canary? Islands and we were able to plot APRS. We had another station in Missouri that I was not able to hear. I suspect he was in my skip zone. What really shocks me is that VARA seems to do nearly as well as fT8 does (although I know the FT8 bandwidth is less than VARA). But AX.25 beacons I can see very well in the waterfall and hear it clearly would not decode. So VARA does seem to be able to dig the signals out of the noise.

I'm testing with another group that is trying to do the same thing but with open-source software (FreeData). It is currently in alpha but I'm impressed with what it is able to do so far. Hopefully Simon will get it to a point where the modem can be used like VARA. Interfacing with other apps.

Thanks for your graph, Tony. I hope we can get more VARA APRS users up on 10M.

I recently tested the performance of several APRS modems using various HF path simulations.
Both VARA and Robust Packet performed much better than standard 300 baud packet which is what you'd expect from robust modems with error corrrection vs. those without.?

Nice to have a reliable modem that just might resurect HF APRS.?
