Re: Super Ikonta 531/2 serial number with an asterisk

Simon, thanks a lot for your valuable remarks. Late 40s was my supposition.
The other interesting thing about the camera is that the lens, although bearing a postwar production name (Zeiss-Opton s/n 37158), is uncoated.
All the best
Marek

Re: Unusual Movikon-K 8

He has two books which verge on the contradictory. For what it is worth, mention is made of putting standard eight reels into the cartridge supplied with the camera...I can think of other examples of this, Pentaflex etc.

As to date, at least the info in both his books is the same. Post war he lists:

Movikon 8(quer) 1952 Movitar (guess this is a query)
Movikon 8? 1956 Movitar
Movikon 8B 1958 Tessar

Then he lists the Movinettes.

None of them with the K prefix.

BUT... I have it all wrong I now realise!

Reading into the detail, these post war cameras have virtually the same dimensions as the later Movinette and further investigation shows that the Movinette started life branded as Movikon 8.

All the cameras with dimensions similar to the K8 are pre-war as you surmise.

Apologies for the confusion

Michael

Re: Super Ikonta 531/2 serial number with an asterisk

Please excuse the delay in replying but I have had problems access Yahoo Groups, I suspect something to do with the recent election results across the water ;-)

According to the Bernd Otto 2004 article in the German language magazine PhotoDeal, there was a production batch of Super Ikonta 531/2 made between September 1948 and March 1950 with serial numbers in the range of G.85092* to G.87000*. ?Where Herr Otto got this detail from I do not know but assuming it is correct, and he has written extensively on Zeiss Ikon matters, this helps to date your camera and reinforces the theory that the use of the star (*) at the end of the serial number indicates post-War production using pre-War parts (including pre-War Carl Zeiss lenses).

Simon Worsley

Re: Unusual Movikon-K 8

Does the Lossau book suggest that the Movikon-K 8 reappeared after the War, all the records I have seen suggests that none of the pre-War Movikon range were reintroduced after 1945 ? ?However my rather strange Movikon-K 8 suggests they were at least tempted.
Regards
Simon Worsley

Re: Unusual Movikon-K 8

Simon,

The Lossau book on movie cameras lists the 1939 K 8 (5501 N) ?as having a special cartridge for 8, 9.5 and 16mm. ?No mention of standard reels.?

Pre war K 8s are listed as having either Sonnar or Novar, Postwar K 8s seem to have Movitar or Tessar if that helps date the camera.

I'm quoting the book, which is not always 100% but useful none the less. ?It is not my area of interest though I do collect 8mm cameras I haven't got involved with Movikons etc.

Michael

Re: Zeiss Ikon Ikonta 521/2 Tessar 1:3,5 f=105mm

Thanks, that's pretty much confirms what I've learned from an article in Zeiss Historica bulletin.

Re: Zeiss Ikon Ikonta 521/2 Tessar 1:3,5 f=105mm

The body number appears to be from 1938. The asterisk after the body number, I am told, refers to cameras made after WWII using pre-WWII parts i.e. the body with post WWII lens.

Re: Super Ikonta 531/2 serial number with an asterisk

Thanks for sharing that image Marek !? Surely interesting !

Hi guys and many thanks for your comments.
I'm afraid it's G... ?:) See the picture
I understand "G" means prewar body parts?

Re: Zeiss Ikon Ikonta 521/2 Tessar 1:3,5 f=105mm

Hi Luis
A little bit late to answer, but maybe you still need some advice. I just purchased similar camera (531/2 in fact - the difference being the rangefinder) of the same vintage. I did some research on my unit so I can be helpful, at least to some extent.
Your lens is postwar Tessar?with T coatings, and serial no. suggests late 40s. It's considered the best lens of any Ikonta.
You can find serial no. of your body imprinted on the opposite side of camera name. And the shutter has its own serial no. too. All that can help estimate production date.
As to what it's worth, Ikontas are priced definitely lower than Super Ikontas. If it works and the glass is good, it will probably be worth $150-200.
Hope this helps
Take care
Marek
