It depends on where you want to spend your time. People have printed each page to a PDF and saved it that way. Lots of time up front and not very much later. You can batch download but it will come as a JSON file. JSON is a data format and there are viewers and editors that can handle it. I also was told there is software that will convert JSON to PDF but there will be editing and massaging involved. So fast download, more time spent later.? But yes, doable either way.? Re: Latest Ravelry kerfuffle
I know quite a few people who like the new design. One always has to keep in mind that people don't like change, no matter what they ask for. I know I hated it the first day but in a couple of days, it was way better as I made some adjustments on my end and Rav made a few adjustments on theirs.? It is apparently a lot nicer on mobile but I rarely use mobile. I even use the desktop view on my phone.? I don't believe anyone needs to rush to download all their patterns but it may be a good thing to do at some point. Just so as not to have to rush to do it. I have heard some people do this all the time - when they buy or get a free pattern, they download it immediately. Some print it and others just keep it on a drive or cloud.? Now on to my speculation: I think the new design is cutesy and a part of me wonders if this is Cassidy's new personal aesthetic. The first home page post she wrote after the change (or when it was rolled out), said that she had been in despair?over the look/feel and other things about the site last year. The innards of Ravelry probably did need refreshing. Software grows old as you keep making changes to it. However, some Ravelers who are familiar with Ruby on Rails, which is what Ravelry is written in, say that this is not an issue with Ruby. But it might be true of the CSS - the style sheets that define the look/feel. These are not areas I am familiar with so I don't know. Just guessing and reading between the lines. Both Jess and Cassidy have alluded to internal changes that make it easier to maintain/enhance.? Livia was definitely not qualified as a UX designer. Just the way the project was run, and my long experience and friendship with a really good UX designer (who has worked in the area through three name changes of the area) tell me that she didn't have the skills to do UX design. This is borne out by Ravelers who claim to have experience. My friend would NEVER do a UX design without an ever increasing (or carefully selected random sample) set of users providing feedback regularly through the project. Some Ravelers who claim to have been beta testers liked the new design, others didn't. Some admitted to not liking it and going back to classic but never bothered to provide feedback because there was no deadline and no followup to see that all provided input. With only about 100 or so, losing even 25% significantly reduces your feedback.? And lastly, my speculation that Cassidy is going through a spell of mental illness along with the stress of current events AND the stress of a major project, and the defensiveness of not having one's baby loved, is probably why she got so nasty and accused people of lying. I'm willing to cut her some?slack as long as things get better in terms of user relationships. I spend a good bit of time in the Rav forums and have found some excellent online friends there that I don't want to lose.? The rest of the site is meh for me as I rarely buy patterns and almost never buy yarn any more. I'd probably want to download my project pages and the patterns i've bought and I may look into doing that some time.? After the sudden announcement that Bluprint/Craftsy was closing with the attendant confusion, I felt it was the cautious choice now was to download my patterns.? If Ravelry continues to implement ill-conceived management decisions, I'm not confident that they won't do something nutty such as close down while I'm busy off line, so I acted. My hope is that they learn and change from this experience.? I enjoy online communities and have learned so much exploring them.? I don't use Facebook, but I see that I may be channeled into it.? 开云体育I have not caught up with everyone’s posts yet but I certainly found that even a few minutes on the site caused me eyestrain and I don’t have a disability or eye problem. Jaya posted the fix to return to the traditional site and that is where I have stayed. ? I really felt that the gimmicks like the dancing on screen llama were like the kinds of things my kids used to put into powerpoints fifteen years ago just to show they could. Not particularly clever, ?not vey adult, didn’t add anything to the working of the site. I wondered if the redesign was partly to make it easier for people scrolling on phone screens, and the most recent comments from Jess etc do seem to imply that. ? I think your summary of the issues is spot on Jaya, and when it all started I reported the story to my DH who groaned and said just because you can doesn’t mean you should”. Also if you get your feedback from invested yes-men it is not going to be worth much. ? I felt that the design and the gimmicks like the prancing llama and “super cute” new features ?like cartoon stickers had been prioritised over functionality. ? I was shocked at the attitudes when it was rolled out with a request to tell them honestly what we thought , followed by sulky hostility to all less than-delighted responses. The issues were severe migraines and potentially seizures (I heard of one) from the blinding whiteness due to expanse of white space and heavy black contrast, ? The entire redesign was mishandled as a software project, with insufficient beta testing, and a very small invested focus group to approve it. The rollout was mishandled, coming during a pandemic when people were already stressed. The staff was invested in the new design and has and continues to respond badly. Not rolling back the new design till problems were fixed, locking and archiving threads where people expressed their issues and problems, and posting a very upbeat intro post that was planned ahead fo time and tone-deaf coming after the issues surfaved. ? Cassidy having mental health problems sounds like a good reason for all this to happen. She was calling the shots and was probably the most invested in the new design, except for the UX designer (who I don't think actually has the qualifications to do UX design because the process followed was not how UX design is meant to work. Re: Latest Ravelry kerfuffle
I was very disappointed by the behaviour of the Team when they 1st rolled out the NuRav. I am aware there will have been folks that jumped on a bandwagon, but those 1st few hours had just too many people claiming migranes, seizures and other conditions. The issue, when you dig, is Livia, the architect has minimal experience in UX. The number of testers was 100 - many competent IT people, and their advice was ignored (one of the 1st big mistakes). But as Amy pointed out, they kept digging & digging - by the end it has looked like the Somme trench warfare - and we all know there are no winners then. Some big name designers have removed the BuyNow link from their patterns - you now are directed to their website. This is a big hit to Rav income: their commission is tiny, but big designers essentially pay their bills. I most certainly wouldn't be happy to have Stephen West & Romi no longer giving commissions. Finally, I could say suppositions regarding Cassidy & her behaviour over this period, but I won't. What is obvious is her complete lack of empathy. When you are a minority & request respect & understanding, it sort of entails that you will give it to others, & here she hasn't. For me, I found this incredibly distasteful. I have seen the email claiming any folks are having medical issues are frauds & lying; and it is a shameful piece of writing, and it is akin to the worst homophobic statements ever spewed in public. Right now Rav is going through a perfect storm, and I would not want to be in that house right now. I feel for Jessica, and it makes me wonder what other strains and behaviours are happening in their personal life. Livia needs to go, and a recognised specialist needs to correct the train wreck.? Goodwill is hard to generate and quick to destroy. The Trumpette exodus was interesting, but left barely a ripple; this poor judgement and lack of empathy is a whole different game - those that are backbone supporters of Rav are empathetic, and if enough leave, then it shall fall over. With all community groups, there are always too many lurkers & voyeurs, with a tiny core that are the do-ers. I would be placating them with any & everything to keep the site afloat. Regards Petey
