YRC Oars not being put away safely or properly- 4
YRC members: The main oar-rack (back right) was a jumbled mess this morning. It looked like someone just threw the oars up on the rack without any consideration as to how they go back. When I went to put away my club oars down at the bottom, an oar from on top fell an hit me. This season, racking oars properly has become a real problem. Racking the oars is pretty simple. Since these racks are very close vertically, and very short in length off the wall, if you don't stack them in some kind of order they will fall and usually pull other oars with them. Here is how we order the oars in the YRC main oar-rack: 1) Put them concave-face to concave-face. ( That would be the Opposite way of spoons in a drawer.) 2) One pair of blades go to the left, the other pair goes to the right, the downside of the blades goes down. 3) Offset the Buttons on the sleeves so you gain a little more room on the dowel. Four of the six YRC levels had oars misplaced. I taped a card on each pair, and taped the oars together. Feel free to undo the taped oars and use them, but you will see how NOT to put away oars. I assume this is from carelessness and being oblivious to the boat house surroundings after rowing. Please be aware: you are in a sculling boathouse with delicate boats worth thousands of dollars all around you. These are not aluminum canoes or plastic kayaks. If you see someone doing it wrong, tell them and show them the proper way. Please pay attention to what you are doing inside. Craig Schiff Equipment Committee \

Bleeding the hose, Gary does not rent any kind of boats now, the U'mass, loaned Rec Racer #15 on the outside rack.
For all YRC members: It seems sometimes in the late mornings the hose has been left On . If you could remember to coiled it up and be sure to Shut it Off , and Bleed it, this will save the hose. Water pressure is high at the boathouse, and if the hose is left On and In the sun, the hose will quickly fail. So try to remember to bleed it, after it is shut off and coiled. Of course, if people are landing or coming back from the dock, leave it on for them. The last sculler using it shuts and bleeds it. Gary wants us all to know that he know longer rents boats. He hasn't for about five years. If anyone ask where or if they can rent a boat, a motorboat, a canoe, or a kayak, Gary doesn't rent them anymore. Although it wasn't row much last year, the RecRacer #15, on the outside rack is a great boat to row. Like the Maas, it is stable but it glides longer. Feel free to try it out. I have cleaned it up, and the slides, shoes, seat, wheels, et cetera are all in good working order. Just be sure the 'splash guard' doesn't wind up on a sling. They are so thin they break easily. In the RecRacer it is easier to do pause drills, square oars, and all the finesse work. Keep your eyes open for any equipment problems and let me know asap. Craig zzooey@...

Yankee Rowing Double
The Yankee Rowing Fluidesign double is now available for club use. It's stored on the outdoor rack for the rowing season. Some requests for those of you using it: The double has a boat cover on it when not in use to protect the hull from sun damage. Please bring the boat from the rack with the cover on it to a set of slings on the grass (to avoid damage to the cover from the hardtop), with the boat upside down. Roll up the cover while the boat is on the slings, and place the cover inside the boathouse while you are rowing. To cover the boat again after rowing, washing, and drying it, please roll out the cover while the boat is on the slings, again, over the grass. And then buckle the bow and use the zipper and buckles in the back end. (The zipper is broken/stuck on one end of the cover--please don't try to fix or move it. We need to get it repaired professionally.) When washing the boat, please be sure to clean and wipe the seat tracks. Then return the boat to its space on the outdoor rack. Thanks very much. Yankee Rowing 2023 Season - Application
Hi Everyone! I am forwarding along the 2023 YRC Application and waiver (see attached). As you will see, the membership dues and fees remain the same as last year. Thank you for sending the application, waiver, and your payment to YRC¡¯s new mailing address, noted on the Application (P.O. Box 1451 Northampton, MA 01061-1451) BEFORE your rowing season begins. Each member is required to complete this process before taking your/a boat out on the river. The temperature of the water has been holding steady at around 50 degrees. The water height and flow has been high but is expected to be coming down. I look forward to sending out an email soon regarding the opening of the boathouse and the 2023 season. Until then, the YRC Board looks forward to seeing those who can make it on Saturday morning from 9:00-11:00 for our Annual Boathouse Clean Up. Hope to see you soon! YCR 2023 Season Update
Hi Everyone! I imagine many of you, like me, are regularly checking the ¡°Advanced Hydraulic Prediction Service¡± to check on the water height and flow. I too am anxious to get back on the water. Having visited the boathouse earlier this month, I saw that a few have braved the current over the last couple of weeks with the wider boats, when the water was not as high and the temperature were unseasonably (albeit freaky) warm. More recently, however, Mother Nature has made it abundantly clear that she is not yet ready for us to get back on the water. The flow is quite high and is anticipated to be quite high for the coming week. Just wanted to let you know that a number of us are regularly checking the water flow. I will let folks know when the river is ready for the club boats to venture out. Those of you heading out in your own boats, please be safe! Also, we hope to see you all at the boathouse cleaning up day on Saturday, May 6th. Looking forward to another great sculling season! Be well! Minutes of Yankee Rowing Club annual meeting 4/19/23
MINUTES OF THE ANNUAL MEETING TUESDAY 4/19/2023 7:30 PM VIA ZOOM. The club can open soon, but not today. The water temperature is fine (about 52F), but the flow is too great for rowing club boats (about 30,000 cubic feet/sec). Recall that club boats may be rowed only when the flow is 20,000 cfs or less. This is the end of Leslie Smith's great run as treasurer. He's done a calm, diligent job of dealing with details so the rest of us can row. Thank you, Leslie. We'd be happy to have him continue, but he's leaving the area, heading to Maine (retiring?). Jenn Ferree is again organizing the spring clubhouse cleanup: May 6 (May 7 rain date) 9-11 AM. She will provide coffee and bagels. Come & clean & socialize. Boathouse/marina update. Although our lease has not been renewed (Gary may be planning to use the boathouse area for another purpose), Gary has assured us that our use of the boathouse for the season is assured. Cold water & hose are on, hot water awaiting a repair. Reservation system. Will start out using the same system as last year and see how it goes. You can access it at https://tinyurl.com/yrcreserve We have a new mailing address: PO Box 1451, Northampton, MA 01061. The membership application form on our website will be updated with the new address and the 2023 season fees after they are set by the Board. Proposed fees: same as 2022 season, not yet approved by Board: Membership: $475/year ($335 after July 16, $225 after Sept. 1) Rack Space Inside: $375/year ($35/month) Rack Space Outside: $100/season Full-year membership term is January to December Officers and Board were elected without dissent by those present on the Zoom call (about 16 people). The notes below summarize some of the discussion during the meeting Jaime spoke briefly about a few prospects for the new season. Generally pursue the status quo. Having a social event sometime mid-season is a good idea. We should do some thinking about how to acquire new members, including learn-to-row-day. Anne suggested we revisit the idea of scholarships for suitable new members. YRC and NCR (Northampton Community Rowing; Sally Linowski is the current president) can work together to offer homes for sweepers who scull and scullers who sweep. YRC can be flexible in accommodating new members with special circumstances. The Board will remain alert to our boathouse occupancy. We should explore the old Smith boathouse option more carefully, including a floor plan. This should be a low-key effort to avoid implying that we are eager to move. Carol suggested we might not nee

Call for Board Members and Volunteers

Here are some ways you can get involved! View this email in your browser Dear NCR Members, Friends and Families! After successfully navigating NCR through COVID-19 and its fallout, we as the Board of Directors are thrilled by the positive energy and renewed growth we¡¯ve seen throughout the 2022 rowing season! This is a very exciting time, and we are more committed than ever to upholding our mission; to identifying new opportunities for our members to engage with the sport of rowing; and to prioritizing diversity, equity and inclusion to make Northampton Community Rowing a home for all. With these aims in mind, we are currently working on two critical projects in collaboration with the City of Northampton and our other partners on the river: The Northampton Waterfront Accessibility Project, which will provide safe and reliable access to the river and shoreline for rowers, kayakers, and beachgoers of all ages and abilities; The ¡°Ready-All-Row¡± grant project, which seeks to broaden our outreach to youth and adult rowers in underserved parts of our community who may not have considered the sport of rowing, as well as updating and expanding our rowing and safety equipment inventory to better meet the needs of our growing membership. If you would like to be part of this effort, and if you have professional skills you would like to share for the good of our community, we hope you will consider joining the Board or one of the sub-committees that carries out our volunteer work. The average commitment is 2-3 hours per month. Board meetings are held via Zoom on the fourth Monday of each month at 7:00 PM. Meetings are open to the public for any who are interested in observing and learning about what we do.
