Musical Instrument Museums
Hi all. I just wanted to give everyone a heads-up on a great little museum in the area: the Museum of Making Music ( https://www.museumofmakingmusic.org/ ). It’s in Carlsbad, CA next to Legoland and in the same building of the NAMM headquarters (parent org). I’ve been going there for years and have always enjoyed the displays and the special events and concerts they host. They just updated the whole place and added many touch-screens to the exhibits to give multi-media info about them. There’s also several areas where visitors can play various instruments from guitars to keyboards to drums. I’d definitely recommend it for anyone interested in music or music instruments. Even little kids like some of the interactive areas. In addition, I became a volunteer there a couple of months ago and really enjoy helping out - mostly helping visitors with the exhibits. The hours are very flexible and you can sign up for various blocks on a website. Lots of very nice people on the staff and the other volunteers. I’d recommend it for anyone in the area who wants to help out for a good cause in the community. Oh, and if you work at least 60 hours in a year, you can go to the NAMM show!!!!! I’ve also found it great to have a place to get dressed to go to at a specific time after all these months working from home. If anyone has questions, please let me know. And, yes, they require masks. https://www.museumofmakingmusic.org/join/volunteer And no, we don’t have a CS80 there but lots of cool and rare instruments including some synths. A few years ago, there was a month-long Moog exhibition that included performances by Eric Norlander, Larry Fast, and Keith Emerson (with the big, modular Moog). Related to this, if you don’t already know, the big NAMM show near Disneyland has been bumped to the first week of June and Synthplex (where there was a CS80) is moving to Oct 2022. David

Photo resistor P588 G50 201B signed PH1 and PH2, where to find orig part/replacement?
4
Greetings, Hope all is well with everyone. Regarding a previous post on different volume outputs on the L+R of my CS-80, a competent tech locally helped me diagnose a faulty photo resistor on the PRA as the likely culprit (we swapped two and the problem moved from one channel to the other). It's the photo resistor P588 G50 201B marked as PH1, PH2 in the schematic, does anyone know where I can find an original part or a modern replacement? best, Mathias

Yamaha YC-45D organ expression pedal usable with a CS-80?
11
Greetings, I hope this message finds everyone in the forum well. A friend of mine has the YC-45D organ, and I noticed that the expression pedal is very similar to the one that originally came with the CS-80. I've taken a look at the YC-45D manual, but there is very little information about the pedal itself. Does anyone here have any experience with this organ+pedal, and know if it works for the CS-80? Sincerely yours, Mathias

Identifying correct resistor value for CS80 power transistor
17
Hello everyone, As I ran into recent issues with my CS80 power supply, I decided to go thru the recapping/4558's swap, that's when i realized that the white resistors connected behind the power transistors (Tr701+Tr702) suffered/leaked in some ways. Before powering things up again, I decided to replace these for future proof reliabilty. Trying to find proper replacement for these, I realized there is some confusion between the reference described in the Part List Manual and what's physically labelled on the resistor itself: in the Yamaha manual, I think the correct one is mentioned as 'cement molded resistor 5P 1Ω' , whereas it's printed ' 5W 1ΩK' on the resistors themselves, which shows to my understanding, a big difference in resistance value (1ohm to 1 kohms). I know the Yamaha manuals can be erroneous sometimes, but in the same time since I'm not the original owner of the CS80 I am not 100% sure the actual resistors are that legitimate in there. So before going any further, any advices/experience feedbacks would be very helpful at this step, thank you!

Expression Pedal compatability question: SY-1 pedal for controlling a CS50?
Hi all, I happened to find an original Yamaha SY-1 expression pedal which looks virtually identical to the one used for the CS50 and CS80, and when peeking inside it seems as if it is also based around the same sort of circuitry as the CS80's swell pedal. According to the SY-1 product leaflet, its applications (i. e. controlling volume and filter) are the same. Simple question: Can the SY-1 pedal be used with the CS50, or am I risking to damage the 50 when using the wrong type of pedal? Thanks for any info more competent than what I already have. Stephen

Troubleshooting the Sub Oscillator Section
6
My Sub Oscillator section is not working at all. What's the best way to go about troubleshooting the different components for failures on the board? How do I measure the LFO IG00150 chip to see if its good or bad? Mind you, I am not an electronics guy so I would need detailed instructions. I don't have a technician anywhere near where I live so trying to do this solo. Much appreciated.

Hello to all My CS 80 Sub Oscillator works fine with aftertouch but not direct. And one of the preset selector lamps stopped working (bass) what kind of replacement should i look for ? The other problem i have: my CS 60 is just the opposite the Sub Oscillator works fine direct but not with aftertouch. any clues on these matters ? Thanks in Advance Is there maybe somebody over here who has the complete and correct dimensions for the CS 80 stand ?

beautiful new CS-60, sub oscillator and noise issue : (
hi all! I'm new here, so please forgive me if this could be worded better. It's great to know there's a community for this. I just bought this CS-60 from a shop called Perfect Circuit, reputable place. Listed in excellent condition, to be honest it's cosmetically by far the nicest CS-60 i've ever seen!! it looks brand new. I was told it was working perfectly as it came from the owner's collection. Essentially, the Sub-Oscillator section isn't working correctly. specifically the 'speed' slider changes nothing at all, no matter what function it's set to. If i bring the VCO, VCF, or VCA down, i notice a slight change in that parameter, but the speed and waveform/function parameters change nothing. The 'noise' function affects it, but the speed changes nothing. Within the main oscillator section, the noise slider also changes nothing. really hoping i'm overlooking something, any help or insight would be so appreciated. attached is a video showing the issue: https://www.dropbox.com/s/cvtyl7no934itco/IMG_2930.MOV?dl=0 thank you so much!! -teo

Aftertouch resolution?
8
Hi all, I've recently been watching a video about the internals of the CS80 and it briefly showed the aftertouch board. It looks like it has multiple exposed vertical lines on the pcb, and then an inverted V shaped piece of conductive rubber that connects more lines the harder you press down on it. Is this system essentially digital? How many different levels can it achieve - what sort of "bit depth" is there? Thanks

Contacts for Yamaha CS80
3
I was wondering who is interested in new contact sets for Yamaha CS80. Together with a friend who has a high quality Markforged 3d printer I will produce a one to one copy. As soon as it is finished and at least as good as the original I will place some pictures. Please let me know if you also need new contacts for the yamaha cs80 because I can reduce the price by larger numbers thanks

CS-80: What's the normal stereo output balance between L-R channels?
23
Greetings good people, Hope this message finds everyone well. I've gotten my CS-80 back from servicing recently, beyond excited. She's never functioned properly as long as I've owned her so I can't be certain, but the stereo L/R output seems unusually imbalanced (there's a 8-12dB difference between the two). My tech is occupied at the moment and not currently available for a follow-up, so I thought I would check with the community here. For those of you who have fully working CS-80s, what's does the proper/normal stereo balance look and sound like? Best, Mathias

Early CS-80 - Pitch Shift Issue
4
Hello all. At David R.'s suggestion, I thought to join in the group to discuss all things CS-80. ----------------------------- Please find attached a paper I pulled together to discuss the problem with some early serial numbers of the CS-80 that had a problem with pitch shifting when holding low notes and then playing high notes.. The issue was discussed in Yamaha Service Bulletin 096, but the modification I propose addresses the root cause which the mods in SB 096, while worthy, do not. The CS-80 Yamaha Service Bulletins, including 096, can be found at the Borish Electronics web page under his Articles tab. Thanks - Scott in Ohio

my afternoon with dave eggar
7
so a childhood music friend of mine came over today with a buddy of his, who's name is dave eggar. he is apparently the "other half" of the musical group evanescence, as well as an accomplished cellist, solo artist, nyc session man extraordinaire(played snl this week w/ ray lamontaine). perfect pitch, julliard grad, blah blah blah-basically, much more of a "real" musician than i......one of those genius types..... so he had his cello, as he was down here for a gig, and he suggested jamming, so... we jammed. i naturally chose the cs80 over the hammond/rhodes/wurly/30+ other synths i have here. as he is a fan of microtonal music, he pushed things into a world exploring things outside of a 12-tone western perspective, yet still using that old western standard (albiet sparingly) as an occasional reference point. my buddy chuck played hand percussion. i've never been a big fan of "free jazz", but this afternoon was one of the most musically invigorating experiences ive had in a LONG time(years?). with use of the ring mod, aftertouch, ribbon, expression pedals, i was able to follow(and lead), right along with him. dynamically, were were able to breathe so fucking naturally, i couldnt believe it. ever had a musical rush that didnt wear off for hours afterward? there it was. and i dont think there was one other instrument i could have maneuvered as deftly. dave commented at how "perfect" the instrument was, and how much more inspiring it was (as a cellist, no less!) than a piano. cello, cs80, and hand percussion. texturally, it was just gorgeous. hopefully its clear im not touting any level of ability here(there a many people on this list with better "chops" than i), merely a testament to yet another day when the cs80 shone bright. just thought i'd share yet another story about the beauty of the instrument..... best, rj [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Wow - may finally be time to retire MIDIBoards! Expressive-E Osmose
6
Need more info but this looks like an amazing controller and synth. Needs one more octave and a ribbon. The latter should be easy since this is a joint venture with the Haken Continuum folks! https://www.engadget.com/2019/11/20/Expressive-E-osmose-synthesizer-futuristic-and-familiar-MPE/

Welcome to our relocated group!
Hi all! I haven't had time to check out all the tabs and features but I'm relieved that we're back up - and off of Yahoo! I've been massively swamped lately with work and family and some health issues so I haven't done any synth-ish stuff since going to Synthplex back in March. I hope everyone else has some time to enjoy synths and other instruments and music in their lives. More later, David

Migrating the group
9
As some of you may know, as of December 14th Yahoo will delete any files or images uploaded or attached to the groups. Also, I believe they are moving to permanently end the Yahoo groups site from what I have read. It would be heartbreaking to lose the valuable info on this group. It’s invaluable for owner based repairs, especially in the case of the CS80 where moving the unit is risky and most techs wouldn’t want to take the job of repair on anyhow. It seems like 开云体育 might be worth looking into but we’ll need to do something for sure.
