Problem powering on
3
Thanks for accepting me to the group. My FT-920 suddenly exhibited a problem upon applying power. Initially when the power switch was depressed the display would com on, and then flash on and off at approximately 1 second intervals. Usually (for several years) I could immediately turn off the power and reapply it and all would be well. Now the last time I tried it, today it had been off for a couple months, and it took me 8 tries to get it to lock up. I double checked the DC power supply, a 35 amp Pyramid and it is set at 13.8 V DC. Any suggestions as to what to look for? I have never had "the hood" open on this transceiver. Best of 73 and I await a reply ( or a dozen). Bernie in ND WD0GMD

Transmitter audio distortion. Looking for troubleshooting tips.
I am helping an older friend who has had FT-920 transmitter distortion, and so we're looking for initial troubleshooting ideas from those who have experienced this trait in the past. All suggestions will be welcome. My friend, Kerry, is not on the www and not computer savvy, and so I'm the intermediary for the time being. We have no real test equipment. My guess is, we'll end up sending the rig to someone, wherever, who can do a complete checkup, cleaning and repair. But first, we'll see what we can come up with on our own. Please see below. The owner is the original owner of the 920 in question. His shack, unfortunately, is located in a humid and somewhat distasteful garage environment here in Florida. Not a good place for anything electronic. My concern is that, like some other brands of amateur equipment, the 920 has finally fallen victim to the initial stages of corrosion of the contacts, etc. Perhaps someone here has had experience in this regard. Distortion is present in the audio during voice peaks, running barefoot. Yes, we've examined closely the operating instructions regarding settings, et al. That's it for now. And Thanks.

FT920 & RM BLA350 Amplifier
On the Amplifier I have two RCA connectors named PTT and ALC. I have tried to connect the PTT of the Amplifier to the TX GND of the FT-920 and The PTT of the Amplifier to the EXT ALC of the Radio. Is it correct? I do not know if I need to make any settings in the Radio menu. When I go to TX in CW I see the radio goes in TX and RX continually during the CW transmissions. Is it normal???? Please any help will be really appreciated 73 de Enzo IK8OZV EasyLog 5 BetaTester EasyLog PDA BetaTester WinBollet BetaTester D.C.I. FT-920 CAT control issues
3
Hello all, Wondering if anyone here has experience with programs being able to use CAT control of an FT-920? I recently acquired one and want to use it for digital modes (among others) and while I can get it to transmit and receive properly (using a Signalink) I cannot get WSJTX or N1MM to talk with it. I don't ever see the CAT icon on the display (flashing or otherwise) and the programs time out waiting for a response. I've tried with a couple different usb to serial adapters with different chipsets (FTDI and Prolific) as well as different operating systems (linux and windows) but haven't been able to get anything to connect. I have also reset the 920 a couple of different ways per the manual but that didn't seem to help either. Any help troubleshooting is appreciated! -Paul AE6MQ

Stupid Question
Hi All, Please apologize for the stupid question. I own a Yaesu FT-920 and an Amplifier RM BLA-350. On the back of the Amplifier I have two RCA connectors named ALC and PTT I would like know which are the correct connections between the Amplifier and the radio. I have connected the PTT from the Amplifier to the TX GND connector of the Radio and The ALC from the Amplifier to the EXT ALC connector of the Radio. Are these connections right or not? I ask this because I am noticing that when I TX in CW the Amplifier does not stay in TX continually But it goes ON and OFF following the CW note. I have tried the to move the PTT on the back of the radio from the TX GND connector to the PTT connector But nothing changed, So I put it back into the TX GND connector of the radio and now the Amplifier won’t go anymore In OPERATE mode. Please any help will be really appreciated. 73 de Enzo IK8OZV EasyLog 5 BetaTester EasyLog PDA BetaTester WinBollet BetaTester D.C.I. Strange Behaviour
2
Hello Folks, I hope in an help. I am using the FT-920 with a KAM Kantronics TNC from a while for digital signals. Today I have noticed a strange behaviour, when the KAM goes in TX the radio Normally goes in TX but when it has finished TXing I see that the KAM going in RX but the radio Remains in TX until I do not or pull out the cable from the KAM, or pull out the cable from The FT-920 or just move a little bit the VFO. I have tried the to change the radio with a Kenwood TS-2000 and have noticed that I do not Get the problem. I have also noticed that if I put the RF GAIN to the minimum, the problem does not appear but As I try to increase the RF GAIN, even just a little bit. The problem appears. Please anybody can tell me what could it be and what to check. Thanks in advance for any help that will be really appreciated. 73 de Enzo IK8OZV EasyLog 5 BetaTester EasyLog PDA BetaTester WinBollet BetaTester D.C.I. FT920 Power & WSKT
From time to time I experience power cycling on/off when transmitting using WSJT-X. I mostly run 6 meters using FT8 & MSK441. The transmit sequence starts fine and the things will start cycling on and off. This happens whether the radio is hot after lots of use or cold. I have not found a relationship to temperature. Just as a blind shot I added ferrites to the power cable and the CAT control cable. Wonder if anyone has had a similar experience?

Astatic mic and FT-920
I acquired an Astatic D-104 mic with the T-UP9 base. I wired it up to an eight pin mic connector per the Astatic website directions, however the mic drive is very sensitive. When I apply a little drive, the ALC is over driven. I have to set the drive nearly fully counterclockwise to prevent over driving the mic. If I sneak the drive up slightly, I over drive it. I soldered a 47ohm 1/2 watt resistor on the white audio wire, hoping that would fix the issue, but that didn't help. The mic drive is still nearly fully counterclockwise. I realize the Astatic is a high impedance mic and the '920 is designed for low impedance mics, but I know of many hams who use this mic with their modern rigs. Has anyone had a similar situation? 73, Tom, N8EUI

DATA-USB transmit
9
Greetings, My 920 will not transmit in DATA-USB. It will xmit in all other data modes as well as USB phone. It acts like it wants to transmit as the receiver switches off and the 'TRANSMIT' indicator lights but just doesn't make any power. I've tried the FSK/AFSK switch and the menu setting for RTTY in upper mode but that doesn't have any affect. I've done the hard CPU reset this AM also to no avail. Has anyone ran across this? For anyone interested in AFSK or FSK operation on the 920, this .pdf might save some time and explain things. I found it helpful... if only my rig would cooperate! 73 es tnx for reading

FT-920 Production Years
Morning Question may have been asked in the past but nothing came up with a search. What were the production years of the FT-920? My serial number is 9Fxx. So I believe that to be April 1999. I say that because I don't believe the 920 was in production in 2019 and it was a later radio than those of 1989. Am I correct? Thank you. Stay safe and healthy. 73 Harrison N1FAM

Filter Combination
3
Hello group I am new here so please bear with me ? I have a FT-920 from a silent key who was actually a friend of mine (KV4DP) I took the rig to sell for his wife (also a friend), but I ended up just giving her the money and keeping the rig for myself. It has been sitting around for a couple of years, and like me, desiring to get back on the air ? I have looked into a few upgrades to do to it. Namely the Inrad roofing filter and some of the cascading SSB and CW filters with the filter boards. Here is my question..... What would be the best combination of filters to get or put in the FT-920????? Both CW and SSB ? Thanks in advance ? Steve/KC8LQV

WSJT-X with the Yaesu 920
Basic Issue; I am using the Yaesu FT-920 with a 9DB to USB cable to control my rig via Ham Radio Deluxe software. All is well. The various elements work well so I am comfortable that the cable I am using between the radio and the computer works. My problem is setting up the 920 with the WSJT-X program. I believe I have the radio set up correctly, the WSJT-X program correct. But when I key the transceiver for FT-4 or 8 through WSJT-X I have the transmit lite on the radio but no indication of power out. The steady tone that sounds during transmission is emanating from my laptop speaker. I am at a loss regarding what I don't have set correctly. Can anyone put me back on track. I would really appreciate it. Thanks 73 Harrison

Signalink mating with the FT-920
2
I want to use the Signalink external sound card unit with my 920 for digital work. I want to interface through the 5 pin din connector on the back of the radio. The Signalink cable to pair the unit with the FT-920 data port is the SLCAB5PD. I have all the necessary parts to make a cable if I can get a good pin out, Does anyone have a pin out for this cable or the cable that they can read out for me. Finally if anyone has the cable and is ready to part with it I am interested. Thank you. 73 Harrison N1FAM
