winlink password prompt - how to get re-prompted 3
Hi, I just set up my winlink and wanted to try it via APRS/YAAC. The first time I tried to send mail YAAC prompted me but I used the wrong password. Now YAAC doesn't seem to want to prompt me again. I only have one try left before (I'm not sure what happens). So how can I get YAAC to prompt me for the password again? I looked in an exported xml but nothing jumped out at me. Thanks, KD2ZUG [Charlie] 73

YAAC, Dire Wolf & ICOM-9700 3
Greetings all, With the demise of my old TM-V71A + RC-D710 rig, I decided to splurge on an entirely new rig -- ICOM-9700. (I'll use this for a lot more than APRS and it's been several years since I got a new rig). My shack has been 100% Linux for awhile -- recently upgraded to Debian 12. Rig is connected via USB. I cloned the most recent dev branch of Dire Wolf and have it partially setup. I made an AGWPE port in YAAC and I've got YAAC successfully connected for RX, it's decoding packets just as it always did with my old rig. However, it's unclear to me what I need to do for PTT/TX. There are some settings in the direwolf.conf file, and there may be some menu tweaks needed on the ICOM-9700 itself. Also, I read about compiling Dire Wolf with hamlib for cat control. Is this necessary? I wouldn't want to go down that path unless it's really needed. I'll likely post this on a Dire Wolf group as well, but I'm curious if anyone here might point me in the right direction. I suspect I have things about 95%+ setup, but just need to weak the PTT settings in the conf, and possibly a tweak or two on the rig itself. Thanks! 73, KD0KZE / Paul

Java upgrade and config 7
I wonder what Iam doing wrong ? Every time theres a Java upgrade I lose the Yaac config and have to reconfigure from scratch which is pretty annoying . I have several laptops and PCs running Yaac with different SSIDs so its more than just a bit of pain . So Ive learned now after suffering this twice to Save the config as XML and that gets a lot of the work done. Still I have given up on trying to reinstate the Raster Maps I used to have. It does not save these and trying to align them is very time consuming over several machines just to have to repeat the process again in a couple of months. Is there a better way to get around this upgrade issue or even a way to save/retain the Raster map alignment settings. Thanks for a great APRS program to Andrew . 73 Tony VK5AH

CRITICAL: new beta build#183 of YAAC, created 2023-Jul-16 6
Greetings, all. Mac users, please manually download this update and unzip it over your existing installation. I finally got to test YAAC on a Mac OS X system, and made a few improvements along with fixing the problem. ---------------------------------------------- next beta build#183 of YAAC ("Yet Another APRS Client"), created 2023-Jul-16 downloadable from https://www.ka2ddo.org/ka2ddo/YAAC.html or https://sourceforge.net/p/yetanotheraprsc changes and updates include: 1. fix broken startup on Mac OS X, and do some platform-specific cleanup to make YAAC operate more cleanly in the OS X environment. 2. more code cleanup for the advance to Java 8 as minimum release. 3. fix APRS Text message sending to not use sequence numbers (requesting acks) if the message is addressed to a known group, rather than to a single station or APRS-IS service. 4. fix refreshing of station/object table when sorting by age of the entries in the list. 5. correct reported version of OpenMap library used in YAAC.

YAAC message station recipient callsign dropdown is not populating 6
Hello. This feature recently stopped working on my APRS station. I am running YAAC and Direwolf on a Pi 4B. It was working fine for months up until a week or so ago. I have not made any system changes. What do I need to do to get this feature back? Thanks for your help.

Feature Request - Button for Auto-Center 5
I ran into an issue today. Looking at the screen in my mobile, I saw a big cluster of calls in one spot. I wanted to zoom in and see who/what was up. However, I have Auto-Center turned on, so as soon as I zoomed in and moved the screen, it jumped back to center on me and I lost track of the others. Any chance of adding a button on the main screen to toggle Auto-Center? Right now, I have to get the mouse or keyboard with trackpad out and go to FILE and turn on/off the Auto-Center feature. Since it doesn't seem to remember its state on reboot, I always have to remember to turn on auto centering. Having a large button in that grid to toggle it on and off would be good. -- 73, Michael WA7SKG "Any day you do not learn one new thing is a wasted day."

Colored Icon Background 7
I've been on the road the last four months and using APRS a lot on the long travels. I notice that occasionally my vehicle icon will have a colored circle around it. Sometimes light blue, sometimes a kind of aqua, sometimes green. It seems somewhat random. I am not changing anything. I'm not finding anything right off that explains this behavior. Now and then, when another vehicle appears on my display, they, too, occasionally display a similar shaded circle around their icon. What/why am I seeing this? -- 73, Michael WA7SKG "Any day you do not learn one new thing is a wasted day."

FINALLY! next beta build#182 of YAAC 7
It took a long time to get this build out. There are a lot of changes and cleanups in this build, but I hope you will appreciate them all. I won't be releasing an updated map set for a few days because this build of YAAC supports a changed and enhanced map importing that older versions of YAAC can't handle, so I want this build to be available before users start complaining their old build of YAAC can't handle the updated map set. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- next beta build#182 of YAAC ("Yet Another APRS Client"), created 2023-Jul-11 downloadable from https://www.ka2ddo.org/ka2ddo/YAAC.html or https://sourceforge.net/p/yetanotheraprsc changes and updates include: 1. fix IS-to-RF (transmit) I-gating to use the I-gate's RF port callsign-SSID and tocall instead of the original station's values in the raw AX.25 frame. This fixes a possible contributor to the APRS flooding noticed on #APRSThursday. 2. add new utility called WayAnalyzer to help debug issue with OpenStreetMap importing and rendering. 3. significant logic and performance improvements in importing OpenStreetMap datasets, though, alas, there is still more work to come. 4. reaarrange the source code so that Maven builds with POM files will actually work correctly for both the YAAC application and all the currently supported plugins, with appropriate adjustments to the Ant build.xml files to work with the new structure. 5. a new Debug plugin which allows dynamically turning on and off debug logging from the expert-mode Configuration dialog for different supported categories of logging while YAAC is running. Also some new core API methods on the DebugCtl class to permit plugins to register new debug logging categories. 6. version update on the JavaHelp library. 7. some code cleanup for the change to Java 8 as minimum supported runtime release, so as to reduce warnings from findbugs and IDE, including identifying interfaces meeting the FunctionalInterface annotation. 8. fix references to old http:// websites in Javadocs to use the current https:// URLs to avoid redirections by browsers visiting the Javadocs on the author's website. 9. add configuration option to not gray out old message traffic (to make it more readable in the UI). 10. fix exceptions thrown when doing a Locate->Landmark search so that all matches will be reported. 11. first draft at fixing filtered message view. 12. make it possible to select text from the popup OSM node/way information dialog and copy it to the clipboard. useful for debugging OSM issues. 13. allow configurable level of position ambiguity in locally-originated beacons. 14. ensure if use of GPS is deselected in the configuration wizard, beacons configured to use GPS as the position source automatically have the "Use GPS for Position" option unchecked. 15. fix places in YAAC where HTTPS transactions were still allowed when the option to force only unencrypted transactions was specified. 16. keep unlabeled OSM ways fronm being selected when clicked on the map if rendering unlabeled ways is disabled. 17. ensure plugin status tabl is correctly updated when a new plugin is installed. 18. ensure AX.25 frame command/poll bits are set correctly. 19. fix SRTM (topographic) data downloader to allow the user to abort if they don't have a USGS account yet to use for the downloading. 20. fix pseudo APRS-IS server plugin so a jammed subordinate client is treated the same way as a real APRS-IS backbone server would, disconnecting the client rather than letting all of YAAC get frozen. 21. remove the bluetooth plugin from the supported plugin set, as the BlueCove library no longer works with current versions of Microsoft Windows. 22. fix port naming in the marineports plugin so the port driver for NMEA-0183 over TCP/IP can actually be used.

SMS Messages not going through 13
I posted this in the direwolf thread as well as I'm not sure if it's a YAAC issue or a direwolf issue but here is the problem.... Map labelling (was: Re: Font/icon size)
Map labelling is displayed based on the current map zoom level and the type of item being labelled. For example, the name of a tiny hamlet would stop being rendered sooner upon zooming out than the name of an entire province would be. The exact default zoom level settings were chosen based on the density of map features in my area (since I look at that part of the map the most). However, those defaults might not be appropriate for your area. The settings can be changed by going to View->Layers...->Select Geographical Map Layers, and adjusting the zoom level numbers on the tabular lists for Ways and Places. Now another small problem: the maps are not showing anymore the names of places ( I mean towns, villages. localities etc. ). The only names that appear are those of rivers (!!). I have the impression that it was not like so when I started, so maybe I have messed up something! Font/icon size (was: Re: [yaac-users] Disk space issue) 5
A little excessive, deleting the entire directory. You might want to keep the log directory, which not only holds debugging logs, but also logs every transmission you make with YAAC, should you need this information to comply with logging regulations in your jurisdiction. As to icon and font size, that is easy to adjust. It depends on whether you want to do it for all stations, or only stations of interest. Font size is adjusted from the expert-mode Configuration dialog's Preferences tab; the map normally uses proportional-spaced fonts, whereas fixed-size fonts are typically used in table views so the values in different rows line up. The Preferences tab also has a checkbox for choosing double-sized icons for all stations/objects. If you only want to enlarge stations of interest, right-click on the icon, and select Show Double-Sized Icon. The View->Tracked Stations table shows all stations and objects you have special settings for. If you double icon size for a station when Preferences specify double-size for everyone, the selected station will get a quadruple-sized icon. Hope this helps. Andrew, KA2DDO author of YAAC From: [email protected] <[email protected]> on behalf of Giovanni IZ5PQT Sent: Tuesday, June 6, 2023, 3:56 PM Hi Andrew, thank you for the info. I deleted the $HOME/YAAC directory and I recovered the disk space. Then I used the option to download the tiles directly and everything was ok in about 10 minutes. I have another question: is it possible to enlarge the station icons and the markings on the map using maybe bold fonts? 73 Giovanni IZ5PQT _._,_._,_

Disk space issue 2
Alas, it takes a _very_ long time (hours to _days_) to import the OSM data, especially from the bzipped XML format. Part of the issue is that the OSM database is structured optimally for a DB (what they call "normalized"). The YAAC importer deliberately de-normalizes the data for efficiency in rendering, which requires huge temporary datafiles (in excess of 48GB) to hold all the OSM Node lat/lon values for easy access in putting those values directly into OSM Way objects instead having to convert Node IDs to lat/lon at render time. Note this code is optimized for whole-planet imports, so it wastes a _lot_ of temporary disk space when doing a subset import. How exactly did you stop the import? If you use the Cancel button on the import progress dialog window, the importer will delete all its temporary files as part of import termination, but even that could take several minutes, depending on the speed of your filesystem and the number of tile-specific temporary files that need to be cleaned up. If you just shut down YAAC, the importer won't get a chance to delete the temporary files. The temporary files are located in your YAAC tile file directory (by default, ${HOME}/YAAC/tiledir [where ${HOME} is your user-specific home directory] unless you used the expert-mode Configuration dialog to put it somewhere else). Any file in that directory or its latitude-specific subdirectories ending in .tmp (temporary data files) or .log (importer progess log) can be safely deleted (unless an import is currently in progress, of course). Alternatively, you could just start another import (which cleans up any stale temporary files before starting over) and immediately Cancel it properly so it can clean up the few new temporary files. Due to the pain of importing OSM data, I make a copy of my whole-planet data available on my website, so you can download already-imported OSM data directly into YAAC without having to run the importer yourself. Go to File->OpenStreetMap->Download Pre-imported Tiles choice, and choose the geographical area you want to download. However, due to troubleshooting a new unreleased feature in the importer, I haven't updated my website's map tiles since November 2022. So the data is available, but won't have any OSM changes or additions since November. Hope this helps. Andrew, KA2DDO author of YAAC From: [email protected] <[email protected]> on behalf of Giovanni IZ5PQT Sent: Tuesday, June 6, 2023, 11:44 AM Hello everybody, I am a new user and had a problem when installing maps. I have YAAC installed on my Windows 10 machine since 2017, but I never used it. Yesterday I decided to configure it and to download the OSM maps for Italy (.bz2 file about 3.1 GB). I had 190 GB of disk free space. After 8 hours in the process of installing the maps in YAAC I decided to cancel the operation, assuming that something wasn't working properly. The final result is that now I have only 137 GB of free disk space! 53 GB have disappered. Where the space was eaten up? I checked in the obvious places but I could not find any files so large. Any suggestion ? 73 Giovanni

Filtered Messages 7
I'm not understanding how to use Filtered Messages. The documentation isn't clear and I'm not able to find any explanations elsewhere online. I opened Filtered Messages after joining the APRSThursday ANSRVR message group, HOTG. I'm seeing messages sent to me in YAAC via the pop-up Messages window. However, they are not showing in Filtered Messages. I have no Message Filters selected in the second tab. We have an APRSThursday Worked-All-States event starting in June, and I wanted to prepare by testing saving messages to a log. Am I missing something? Running YAAC 1.0-beta181

Not receiving messages? 7
Hello, I'm completely new at this so bear with me. I have YAAC setup and seems to be working fine. I'm beaconing out and can see my station on aprs.fi. I'm trying to figure out messages. I sent out a message for APRS Thursday and on aprs.fi I can see that I'm getting responses, but I'm not getting back any messages in YAAC. In the raw packet viewer I can see I'm receiving packets from other stations, including messages, just none that are addressed for me. Do I have something set up incorrectly? I'm kind of lost here. Thanks

Canned Messages 2
I have some messages that I send on a recurring basis, such as the APRSThursday reports, POTA Spots, status reports, etc. Is it possible to somehow store a number of canned messages that I can just pick from a list that will have the TO, VIA, and message info? That way I can prepare a bunch of POTA Spot messages for various parks I frequent and other messages to just click and send? -- 73, Michael WA7SKG "Any day you do not learn one new thing is a wasted day."
