Yacc won't transmit with Kenwood TM-D710

I'm trying to run Yacc on Windows 10 with a Kenwood TM-D710.? I am using a USB to serial port.? I can receive fine, but it won't transmit beacons or messages.? Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Well, there are a couple of possibilities.

1. Kenwood radios require RS232 modem control signals (DTR, DSR, etc.). However, in cheap USB-to-serial adapters, these are often omitted as excess circuitry. You may want to get an RS232 line monitor to connect between your adapter and the Kenwood PG-5H cable to confirm the DTR and RTS signals are coming out of your adapter. The below link shows an inexpensive device that I have found to work well:

2. What port type are you using in YAAC to talk to the Kenwood, and what mode is your D710 in (APRS or PACKET)? The Kenwood port type in YAAC corresponds to the APRS mode in the D710, which DOES NOT permit transmitting from an external computer (only from the D710 control head itself). The Serial_TNC port type in YAAC corresponds to the PACKET mode of the D710, which means you lose the pretty APRS packet display in the D710 and all of its beaconing abilities, but gain the ability to transmit from the computer (assuming you enabled transmitting in the Serial_TNC configuration panel). YAAC also has a Radio View window which provides most of the display information of the D710 control head.

Hope this helps.

As we are aware, the TM-D710A has packet/APRS modem built in the head unit, but the chipset used for it has a limited payload so you end up breaking messages into smaller chunks.

I would recommend using the TM-D710A (and the TM-V71A - same radio body) in the traditional packet setup. Connect a soundcard to the Data jack and a serial port to the PC jack. Set the data band to A or B (Preference) and then turn on EchoLink Sysop mode. Then when you assert RTS on the serial port it will key the transmitter of the selected Data Band. For APRS you'll need a TNC like direwolf to encode and decode the modem tones.

The beauty of this setup is you all ready to use the same radio for other modes like FSQ, MultiFSK, SSTV, etc., with fldigi etc.

Thanks.? I didn't have any trouble connecting to the radio with PuTTY.? I am using the Serial_TNC mode in YACC.? The radio is set to "PACKET12".? I understand the Kenwood has a limited buffer size but it should be able to send something.? Sometimes it works for receive, but it never works for transmit.? What setting should I put in for "Command to enter KISS mode"?

The Kenwood D710 is a TNC2-compatible, so just pick that pre-programmed setting,

When you configured the Serial_TNC port, did you enable transmits and specify your callsign?

Thanks for all the help.? I ended up re-installing Java and now it transmits!

But, I see this issue when I look at my packets on aprs.fi:

2022-01-16 21:32:40 PST:?>APJYC1,WIDE1-1,WIDE2-1,qAO,::SMSGTE???:@6502820215?Test{m0001
2022-01-16 21:33:09 PST:?>APJYC1,WIDE1-1,WIDE2-1,qAR,:=/;Y)@/[M4???#,/W2?[Invalid compressed packet]
2022-01-16 21:35:09 PST:?>APJYC1,qAR,:=/;Y)@/[M4???#,/W2?[Invalid compressed packet]
2022-01-16 21:36:01 PST:?>APJYC1,WIDE1-1,qAR,:=/;Y)@/[M4???#,/W2?[Invalid compressed packet]

My message to SMSGTE works fine but the beacons seem to have a formatting issue.? I must have something set wrong.? Any ideas?

Chris W6COV

Ok, I figured out this one too.? It turns out I did not set a Display symbol in the Beacon.? Once I did that it works.? Thanks again everyone for your help.
