Greetings.

Re; diff between I-gate and S-gate: you said it: the frequency being monitored to forward to the Internet. Also, S-gates generally aren't transmit-capable, i.e., Rx I-gate.

Re: your Maidenhead difficulties: That's odd. The documentation for Maidenhead locators says that lowercase is OK (and even preferred if allowed by the character set in use) for the 2nd pair of letters (at least, according to Wikipedia at ) so that is what YAAC uses when it automatically generates a Maidenhead locator based on the the default beacon's latitude and longitude. However, you can always turn off automatically generating the locator and manually type it in as the first 6 characters of your status text. In the meantime, I'll ask the Direwolf author about it.

YAAC and Sat gates

I'm trying to set up a Sgate in my regional area 160km south of the big smoke.
I'm using a RPi, a RTL-SDR, and direwolf. It works as an Igate.
What's the difference between an I gate and a S gate? Besides the RX frequency.

In testing my S gate I found I get an error at a remote direwolf receiver telling me I'm using a lowercase character in my maidenhead grid like QF55hd
It doesn't like the lower case hd. I tracked this down to my status beacon but there is nowhere to set the grid square on this status beacon page.
There is only space for my text which is how I know it's by status beacon which sends the lower case character.
I remember there was a once only place where you can set the status grid during the initial installation so how can I replace my grid square QF55hd with QF55HD?
Without deleting and re installing YAAC.
Thanks, Bob vk2byf

Re: What can you add to APRS?

Edited

Somehow I missed this over the past few weeks, but it's a great question.? APRS has traditionally been a network of "push" information...the assumption has always been that the digipeater sysops know the local area better than anyone and are best-suited to provide relevant local information.? Of course almost 40 years after the advent of APRS in the amateur community, the proverbial tables have turned.? Now "the computers" know all the local area information better than any single one person could every hope to, and so the paradigm has shifted from a "push" to a "pull" mindset, particularly given the limited bandwidth of the traditional APRS channel.? This begs a few questions in my mind:

1)? What information is still relevant to the sysadmin "push" paradigm?? Location information probably bubbles to the top of my list, but as Andrew indicates...not all location information is created equal.? Being able to "pull" repeater information via the QRU service is arguably a better system than clobbering up channel bandwidth with packets received largely by folks who already know where those repeaters are (and probably have them programmed into their radios).? Other "push" information which is still relevant:? NWS Weather Alerts, Bulletins, and Emergency packets.

2)? So what is relevant in a "pull" paradigm?? Pretty much anything else...traffic speed "signposts", ham radio supply store locations, coffee shop locations, status queries...the list is as long as your imagination...the only question is can you get the information from one source, effectively compress it into an APRS message, and efficiently get it back to the requester?? Standardizing popular data types into a common format (XXXX IN AN OBJECT format) helps drive commonality in radio manufacturers, but as more radios transition to software, this becomes less important as hams learn to process information outside the radio firmware.? (YAAC is a perfect example of this for me...my FTM-400 has a basic packet processor inside the radio and displays location/direction/weather/etc. information on the radio display, but I prefer to export the data out of the radio into YAAC where I can manipulate it much more freely.)? Also in the "pull" paradigm category would be services like SMSGTE, EMAIL2, WHO-IS, QRU, etc.? These services are initiated by the end-user when information is either needed, or information is needed to be sent to another data network.? One might consider services like SMSGTE and EMAIL as a 3rd paradigm..."translator" services between APRS and other data networks.

While many urban areas have significant digipeater coverage, here in the desert Southwest terrain still provides limitations to 2m APRS coverage and 1200 baud digis may not be adequate to provide the quality and reliability of coverage experienced by most urban/suburban APRS users.? As such, providing the ability to more efficiently/effectively utilize APRS on HF bands provides an enormous "service" to those of us who have a "4x4" selector in every vehicle we own.? Andrew has done great work in this respect by implementing the ability to connect YAAC to W1HJK's Fldigi software using KISS TCP.? This has created the possibility for new life to APRS over HF; however, what is needed is standardization of operating mode and frequencies to enable end-users to get their data routed to both APRS-IS and distant destinations.? Direwolf provides similar functionality using KISS TCP, but utilizes the legacy 300 baud AFSK standard originally used for HF APRS.? Other software may provide even more transport options...commonality is what makes a network work.

One piece of software with which I've been experimenting is Jordan Sherer's .? Jordan has provided a UDP port in JS8Call which utilizes JSON to move information in/out of JS8Call, as well control some features of the software.? JS8 mode provides excellent weak-signal performance, and in its normal mode decodes quite nicely down to around -20dB SNR.? I've been running a copy in my truck utilizing a RaspberryPi and a 7" touchscreen for about 8 weeks now and have been impressed with how reliable and seamless the JS8 data comes streaming in...even at the bottom of Cycle 24.? My is truly impressive on most days.? Jordan has implemented some basic APRS functionality into JS8Call which allows the user to send raw APRS packets on-air which receiving stations can port into APRS-IS.? While the functionality is currently only one-way, my experiments with it have yielded the conclusion that JS8 may very well make a decent transport for APRS on HF.? For those of us who spend a lot of time in remote/austere back-country travel, the implementation of a reliable HF solution using APRS would be very welcome.? As such, I've begun preliminary work on coding a "translator" interface which will ultimately connect a YAAC KISS TCP port to JS8Call UDP, allowing JS8Call to function as a Layer 1 modem to move APRS packets over HF.? While the data rate is slower than classic 300 baud packet, the narrow signal bandwidth and weak-signal reliability of JS8 make it an interesting tool for moving APRS data over the air.? The multi-speed modem functionality of JS8Call may provide a way for future development of a "path-aware" modem with self-throttling capability.? The built-in ability to automatically change bands based on time-of-day/propagation conditions adds even more reliability to the "connectivity" puzzle.

Getting back to Andrew's question, there is still plenty to be done to bring "services" to APRS...whether it's aggregating information from other data networks and moving it to APRS "on-demand", or whether it's innovating transport mechanisms to fuse the diligent efforts of multiple existing open-source software developers.? While coding skills are required at some point in the process, ideas are just as essential to give focus to the effort.? Where do you see APRS headed in the next 20 years?

Unless you're traveling a long way, you won't need an Internet connection to pull maps on the road. The map download feature stores the raw map data on your laptop for the entire area you specified to download, so YAAC will keep redrawing the map based on local data until you drive past the edge of the local data you have.

Also, you can download multiple chunks of raw map data, instead of just one square (if, for example, you were flying to a distant city and wanted its map area).

I like to use PI 4 using KM4ACK build. This is my Test PI for Jason builds. For power, I'll be using a 12 v with a USB 5 v plug with 2 12 cigar plugs in the. I'm hoping I don't have any hiccups.
Yesterday my Aprsdroid shut down?because of overheating. I hope PI 4 doesn't have any issues.

I'm hoping my USB GPS dongle will work instead of my static GPS.

Re: Going mobile

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

For what it's worth, I have a Raspberry Pi-3B in my car, running pretty much with no problem.? At least, it has not shut down due to temperature.? I do have the little fan installed, along with the stick-on heat sinks.? There's also no "hat" over the top; fans blow directly on the chips.? I'm using Direwolf and a cheap USB audio dongle for the TNC.? PTT is from a GPIO pin and a 1-transistor buffer.? GPS is from a USB GPS puck (a Garmin, I think).? I have the Pi's VGA port tied to the car's in-dash display, where the back-up camera goes.? The display can be set to view the camera even when the car is not in reverse, so that works out well, though it's a little small.? Ok, it's a lot small.? But in a pinch, it works.? My phone / tablet can also connect to the Pi with VNC.

Power is as you plan - USB power adapter in the 12v accessory port.? The Pi-4 takes more power than the Pi-3, so be sure to size the USB power dongle properly.? In use I just let the Pi boot when the car turns on (it's an EV), and it un-cerimoniously turns off when the car goes to sleep.? I know that's not the best idea, but have yet to mangle the SD card.? If it happens, I've made an image of the card from which I can restore things easily enough.

I also can use the phone as an Internet hotspot, but mostly it runs without it.? There's an option (thanks Andrew!) to automatically retry the Internet connection when it drops or comes up some time after booting.? The Pi is running the standard Raspbian Stretch distro.? Remember to turn off the option that has the system wait for the network during boot.

Good luck!

I'll attach the PI 4 tomorrow. I did the YAAC install from KM4ACK. I have a feeling it comes from the source. Not sure but will check in the AM.

Note that you might not have loaded all the map data in your area. If you notice the map stops exactly at one of the vertical or horizontal latitude/longitude lines (it's called the graticule), then you don't have map tile data beyond that line.

Alternatively, you're using an old version of YAAC that can't handle the newer information in your map data, so the map rendering aborts mid-draw. So, go to the Help menu and select Check for Updates, and ensure you are running the latest version of YAAC (currently, build 151). Once you've updated your version of YAAC, ensure your map data is also up-to-date. If that doesn't fix the problem, email me again.

AS noob when it comes to YAAC and Linux. In the Configure Map. I can't seem to figure out how make the map expand. I only get 1/2 a screen. I like to cover the Vancouver City out towards Hope BC. What gets me is that I center the map on my location. I'm right on the edge of the map. I'm running a PI 4.

You didn't happen to create a application launch file and stick it in the autostart directory, did you?

Re: New TNC works great with YAAC

Cool device. Looks like they used a powerful enough processor in the TNC that its firmware could handle receiving the next outgoing packet from the computer before the TNC was finished transmitting the last outgoing packet to the radio, unlike the antique TNC2 compatibles (which probably assumed that a human being couldn't manually type another packet before the last one got sent).

But, because there are so many of those feeble antique TNCs out there, I am still working on push-back code to handle their limitations without depending on the unreliable presence of hardware flow control signals.

I've just assembled a new TNC and tested it with YAAC, it works great.

I had a problem with my last TNC, a TNC-pi9k6, which did not pass the wx packet. This new one did.

Total cost is about $35, purchase the board and CPU on etsy and the rest of the parts at DigiKey

Re: Small Screen Plugin

Sure. Just drag the small-screen window over to the other monitor (assuming your desktop is set up as a single virtual screen spanning multiple monitors).

Unfortunately, I forgot to add the code to the small screen window to have YAAC remember where it is placed and sized on a (possibly multi-monitor) desktop (assuming that most Raspberry Pi's with small screens wouldn't be multi-monitor). I will add that in the next build of the plugin.

Is there any way to have the small screen plugin display on a different screen than the default monitor? I have a 7" USB monitor connected to my computer and I would like to use the small screen display on that monitor instead of the default one.
