Intermittent outages of ka2ddo.org website

Greetings, all.

My server that hosts the ka2ddo.org website (which hosts the pre-processed map archive for YAAC) is suffering a disk drive failure. I am in the process of upgrading to a new physical disk drive and an operating system upgrade, which will mean that at times the website will be down (because it's not configured yet in the new operating system). Please be patient and try again in a few hours if you try to download map tiles and you get a timeout or "not found" error.

You can still get the YAAC program itself from

You have two issues here.

The APRS-IS server passcode used to authenticate you to the backbone
is linked to your callsign. If you change your callsign, you need a new
passcode associated with the new callsign. So there is no problem there,
just you didn't finish all the redtape associated with changing your callsign.
Ah, such is vanity! :-)

Re: the FCC database: that is a snapshot the FCC takes periodically from their
Universal Licensing System. Your local copy of the DB is _only_ updated when
you explicitly pull down another snapshot, and I can't say how often the FCC
updates their snapshot for the bulk download YAAC's Callsign DB plugin uses.
This is because the Callsign DB plugin (like the rest of YAAC) is designed to
operate in an environment where Internet access is not available, so it keeps
a local copy of any data it needs.

Hope this helps.

My Brain is about to Explode

I have been reading, reconfiguring, testing, reading some more, repeat, repeat for now several weeks.
I cannot seem to get this little project work as expected.
I am trying to build a 2 way I gate with a PI-4 and a TNC-PI. I have the OS installed.I have YAAC installed.I have full radio control.? I have what I think is digipeting working. But I cannot seem to find that magic check box to make the radio contacts go to aprs.fi. I do have 2 ports setup.? I think I have a good password for APR-IS. Not 100% sure. If somebody wants to send me a password using my call sign wr7ay to wr7ay@... I will check to see if it matches my current iteration.
So, I propose, if somebody has a configuration like mine and would be willing to export out the config file then email it to me (with any personal info redacted) I would be grateful!
OR maybe make a document with screenshots of each page with the correct check marks and settings in the right spots.? Then email that to me.
Any help like that would be great.
I now await you folks kindness.

Call sign change

I recently received my vanity call sign and when i change it in yaac, yaac stops working, meaning that nothing i do in yaac makes it to APRS.fi. It tells me that my new call sign is invalid. When i try to update the call sign database nothing happens. I put my cal sign in and it pulls up the last holder.

Re: PK88 in KISS mode is deaf under YAAC

Thank you Andrew. I'll give all of that consideration.

Re: Pi clone to replace Rasp Pi?

For TNC, I’m using direwolf combined with

DRA-34 (cm108 GPIO)
Signalink USB (VOX)
or a Cheapo $8 USB sound card plus USB to Serial for RTS-based keying.

I’ve used each of these sound cards with both the Rock64, Pi3/4, and Chromebook.

I’ll consider writing up a blog post with more details on my setup.

aprs.fi has data feeds from more than just the APRS-IS backbone. There is a separate backbone (using APRS-IS protocols) called cwop.aprs2.net which carries just unlicensed CWOP traffic, so it can't get accidentally transmitted to RF (and put the Tx I-gate station owner at legal risk). There is also the FireNet, which carries traffic from non-amateur-radio sensors of interest to fire, emergency management, and weather services.

If you would like to see the CWOP traffic in your YAAC client, open an APRS-IS port in YAAC pointed at cwop.aprs2.net. Re: PK88 in KISS mode is deaf under YAAC

Hmmm... that's odd. I presume you are using the Serial_TNC port type to communicate with your PK88. It sounds like the PK88 is upset that it is not getting proper modem control signals for hardware flow control. Did you check that option (TXFLOW or XFLOW) on the PK88? Also, you should be in KISS mode (per the directions in the PK88 manual, though I'm not sure about the HOST ON command). And you definitely don't want to have HPOLL ON specified on the PK88 (only HPOLL OFF). Also, if you are using hardware flow control, your computer's serial port has to be capable of sending those modem control signals. Many cheap USB-to-RS232 adapters only provide the Signal Ground, Rx Data, and Tx Data signals, and none of the modem control wires (even if the chip inside the adapter supports them) to save on the extra signal voltage level converters. You might want to get an RS232 line monitor box (a cheap one with just line-powered LED indicators) to confirm the hardware flow control signals (CTS, RTS, and possibly DTR and DSR and DCD) are present instead of disconnected. Then ensure you have selected hardware flow control in your YAAC port configuration.

Hope this helps.

Hello all,

I have a PK88 that I've been playing with to beacon my station and send messages. I was using putty and the TNC commands to do that. I decided to experiment with objects, so I installed YAAC and configured. I can get my station beacon, messages, and a couple of objects out, but the received packets don't show in the raw packet sniffer. I have made sure there are no filters that would restrict the packets (I never set any up anyway.) When I look at my port config and click the test port button, raw packet data cascades through the black window. After a while, the MULT LED on the PK88 starts flashing which indicates a full receive buffer. I can click test port and empty the buffer, then again after a while, it starts flashing again. I would like to see the map populate with the packet traffic, but that's not happening.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
David KD4ADC

Subject: Re: [yaac-users] Pi clone to replace Rasp Pi?

I’ve had good luck with old Chromebooks converted to run Linux… if you don’t need GPIO, these are nice because they have integrated battery, display, and keyboard. Also can be easily had for < $50. I have 5 Lenovo N23, which I use Portable and at repeater sites (as igate).

My main station computer (where I run YAAC) is a SBC, running Armbian. I’ve had no issues with this setup and do use GPIO pins to key the radio.

The main problem you’ll have with the clone boards will definitely be finding compatible kernels that support all of the board features you’re trying to use. The big understated feature of the real raspi is amazing compatibility and software support, everything tends to “just work”. With a clone board, you’ll be digging through wiki pages and forum posts trying to figure out what the latest information for your board is.

For the specific board you linked, I think you’ll find it severely underpowered for running a graphical window manager and YAAC. If you do go for a knock off board, I’d suggest something with at least 4GB of RAM.

I have 2 Odroid XU4's. None of the negative issues mentioned above apply, and I expect the same is true for the newer Odroid models. One of them is running Ubuntu 20.04, and the other is on 22.04, both of which are images provided by Hardkernel (maker of the Odroids).

Hi Andrew,

I use a Raspberry Pi 3B at the remote IGATE but when I tried the a similar installation at home using a Raspberry Pi 4B and an Intel PC Desktop Computer running UBUNTU, your APRSISserver plugin works fine.

I think I have to reinstall YAAC from scratch in the IGATE which is not in my home and try again. There is probably something missing there due to something I have doen wrong. Sorry for the false alarm. It is probably our installation to blame!

I'll keep you posted.
