Calculation of Solar Noon (Local)
2
I've been using the solve tool to find, for example, times of quarter moon, maximum and minimum lunar declination, perigees. I've learned by doing. Always wonder whether there exists some kind of tutorial on this. For one thing, Perihelion, and sometimes Perigee and Apogee, or other times, raise up an error, that the desired precision is not possible. I usually just use trial and error, and broaden precision to, say, 20 or 30 minutes, or sometimes, for Perihelion or Aphelion, 1 to 2 hours. I'd love to see a good write-up on these processes. If I may be forgiven, perhaps this is a good time to mention some other ideas: Could one define a macro to repeat the search parameters (24:00:00, 10,000 repetitions) in one click? Is a single search shortcut for times of quarter moons possible, possibly as a macro? That's more than enough, I'm sure. Xephem is intuitive, in most respects. Little by little I am gaining in proficiency for my needs, which are modest. Thank you very much. Alan Davis

UCAC5
Hi, Has anyone used UCAC5 with XEphem? I've half hearted tried by obviously it's hard coded, just looked at the code. The version of XEphem I'm using will read UCAC4, unfortunately for myself UCAC4 has some problems in the southern hemisphere. The version of XEphem I'm using is 3.7.7 released August 9 2015. Is this the latest version? This version does read UCAC4. I'm looking through the code for patchlevel '3.7.5-RC9' and it's obvious that the format of the 'unf' file changed from 'unf3' to 'unf4'. I tried copying the 'unf5' file to 'unf4' but no luck obviously there's some versioning aspect inside the 'unf' file. So what to do? Has anyone solved this? Cheers, Mike Chapman

XEphem 3.7.7 live CD?

Dear XEphem-enthusiasts, Do you know a Linux live-CD that includes the latest version of XEphem? I have used Distro-Astro 3.0.2 for a while but it has XEphem 3.7.6. Yours, Maxime

XEphem fails on MacOS 10.15.3 with Macports

After upgrading to Catalina, XEphem (installed via Macports) fails at runtime: This does not appear to be a Macports problem strictly, as it compiles and installs properly.

Script Error when starting XEphem on MacOS
4
Hi, I was able to run XEphem on my Mac, but suddenly I get the following error message when starting it. This normal starting script is suddenly causing the error. Probably some new setting on my Mac (10.14.6) that I am not aware of that is creating the issue, but maybe someone here is knowledgeable in Apple scripts and can point me to possible error sources or even help me fix this error. Searching for error message on the internet didn't result in anything helpful to me at least. Thanks! RK

I think this has been broken for quite a while. Is there something that I need to do on the user side to fix this?

XEphem in the classroom
Hi, I was just willing to share a picture of my students working on (very basic) planetary motion exercises, and renew my thanks to Elwood for writing this great software and to all members of the community for sharing tips and tricks! I am planning to use and enjoy XEphem as long as it can be installed without too much pain! Yours, Maxime

Cannot get to run on MAC running macOS Mojave 10.14.3
18
I cannot find a way to get Xephem to run on my MacBook Pro running macOS Mojave 10.14.3; I have successfully done control<click> thing and it starts to open, no longer tells me it can't, but it just hangs with the icon in the app bar at the bottom of the screen, with a little dot beneath it indicating it is open. Any ideas to try would be greatly appreciated, as I would be very sad to lose the utility this fine program provides. Thanks David

Use libastro in a C program
4
Hello everyone, would it be possible to use the libastro library, in a program that is not xephem? I would need to use it to calculate the sunrise and sunset, to create an astronomical clock for switching on and off the lighting of an aquarium, I currently use pyephem, but I'm thinking of changing the microcontroller and so I have to write all the program in C. All I need is an example. Thank you P.S. this is an online translation. sorry

Xephem, BC sky view
3
Hello, after reading the essay Hamlet's mill (De Santillana, Von Dechend - 1969) that investigates myths and supposed astronomical knowledge of ancient civilizations, I opened XEphem to have a look mainly to the precession phenomenon and the constellation where the vernal equinox was during ancient times. The XEphem manual reports that " 2.3.2 Time [...] The algorithm uses values tabulated in the Astronomical Almanac for years 1620.0 through 1998.0, and is accurate to within a few seconds over that interval. Dates prior are from Stephenson and Morrison or K. M. Borkowski, with an estimated error of 15 minutes at 1500 B.C". I wonder what precision one can expect for dates earlier than 1500 BC. Does Sky view is expected to show "valid" positions for stars - zodiac constellations - and vernal equinox? I am not interested to precision in the order of hours. Just wonder how far I can set a date in the past and obtain a "probably correct" result for the vernal equinox and the constellation where it was (just out of curiosity). Best regards Stefano XEphem - Slackware current

XEphem over VNC?
7
Hi all, Brand new to both xephem and to the group. I am particularly interested in xephem because xmtel works with xephem and xmtel has telescope drivers for Sidereal Technology. I recently converted my JMI NGT-18 to the sitech controller and servo motors but sitech's software to date is windows only. I have an Odroid XU4 running Ubuntu 18.04 that I want to use for xephem / xmtel and to drive the sitech controller. I want it to run headless so I'd been planning on a VNC setup using x11vnc and connecting to the XU4 either from my Mac or from an old 1st generation iPad. I use x11vnc on the XU4 now and connection to it with tigervnc from the Mac it is rock solid for every application except xephem. Connecting to xephem causes the tigervnc client on the Mac to crash within a couple of minutes of use. Every time. x11vnc on the XU4 remains running and I can make a new connection almost immediately that will last another couple of minutes. I've also tried the RealVNC client for the Mac and hauled out a windows computer to test but unfortunately got the same crash. Is this a known problem and if so is there a solution? Alternatively I can do X forwarding from the XU4 but that limits me to the Mac and Quartz. Thanks! Jeff Ross Townsend, MT

OT: Yahoogroups as a provider?
12
Hello Everyone! It's come to my attention that Yahoogroups has changed their TOS in order to more broadly disseminate our personal information to 3rd-party providers and advertising agencies. As the owner/moderator of the XEphem mailing list I would like to "check the pulse" of our members to see if this is acceptable vs. changing to a different provider. Of course the final decision is up to Elwood. If he and the general membership are ok with staying with Yahoogroups then we will do so. If not I'll start migrating accounts to a different provider like . What do you think? John Perry http://www.jpunix.net

We may be here for a while
Hello Everyone! I just checked on the status of the move to groups.io. It turns out that the person (Mark) who is in charge of the transfers is on vacation until May 2 or 3. You are welcome to add yourself manually at the new site if you wish. But be aware that we are at the bottom of a very long list of transfer. Again the link to the new list is: /g/xephem When we get moved all of the archived messages will re-appear. The new site is currently empty. -- John Perry
