Hello Everyone!
?
It's come to my attention that Yahoogroups has changed their TOS in order to more broadly disseminate our personal information to 3rd-party providers and advertising?agencies. As the owner/moderator of the XEphem mailing list I would like to "check the pulse" of our members to see if this is acceptable vs. changing to a different provider. Of course the final decision is up to Elwood. If he and the general membership are ok with staying with Yahoogroups then we will do so. If not I'll start migrating accounts to a different provider like .?
?
What do you think?

I will stay here for a while there are to much contacts that know my actual address at yahoo.com. ? I will check the new TOS but usually I just block spam in my personal filters, so..... any unwanted e-mail will be rejected. ;)

Hi,
One other group I use has moved to ''.? I'd have to say that Yahoo seems to be almost un-useable and is now almost impossible to search through.? There is a significant problem around moving content from Yahoo to Groups.IO.
Cheers, Mike Chapman

Hi,
on general principles (and as an end-user) I strongly second the change.
(The group is not the place to start a rant against the major internet players who already make Big Brother look like an angel as far as privacy is concerned, so I refrain :)
... (this is the space for the rant I started anyway but finally deleted) ...
Of course as the maintainer, you'll have to weigh pros and cons, ensure the sustainability of the destination provider and take into account the general feeling among the members...
For me, it's a loud and clear 'yes' to the change.

Hi,
Not my group.? I understand one issue is to do with ownership of posted content.? It's likely that only people that have moved to the new group can take their content, otherwise permission needs to be obtained.? It's also possible that some people have posted and moved on, no longer members of the group, or maybe they've died and permission is not practically possible.? It's worth looking into.
Cheers, Mike Chapman?

Well my understanding is that Yahoo owns all posted content and can use it as they please. What I see on groups.io is that I can migrate the entire list to the new location including all members and archived messages with a single click. But that being said... groups.io is claiming they are having issues with the migration mechanism.
I'm not moving anything until we have a consensus. But if I start the move it may take days to weeks for it to finish.

I will accept the decision of the majority but my vote is to move. Other groups I am in have also recently moved to groups.io and I like it there much better than here. I have only been a member in these moves, so can not speak to difficulties encountered by the admins, but from what I¡¯ve seen the migration goes pretty smoothly.
BYW John, I may never have publicly shared my sincere thanks for your capable shepherding of this group over the years. You¡¯ve always been fair and jumped in quickly when bumps were encountered. Most appreciated.
Hoping to see you all over at groups.io,
Elwood

Since the responses have been general positive for the move I'll start the move shortly. I'll run both groups in tandem until I'm sure our new home is a nice place to live. My apologies in advance for any duplicate messages you may see during the move.

I vote to move.?
The main reason is that Yahoo's future has been very dim over the years and I feel that moving when we would like to would be better than trying to the the old messages from the bankruptcy attorneys.
