Re: Fldigi on Windows 11

Hello Geo,

Sometimes it's a matter of the config files which may over time start making issues, when updating or moving installations around.

I suggest as a last resort to make an entirely fresh special install of the latest stable ver4.2.06 as follows:

On your hard disk, create a folder with write privileges (NOT in Windows governed folders like 'C:\Programs' etc.!!!) and call it exactly this (it may reside in a suitable sub-directory of your choice, though):

FL_APPS

Use underscore, not Space in the folder name!

Install FLdigi therein and follow the instructions given by the installer.

Then run FLdigi from this FL_APPS folder and set your devices and preferences as necessary for trying it out. Note that this will/should be independent from any other FLdigi installation onthis PC, not taking into account your previous user settings. If this works, you may adapt the necessary features further to fit your needs. Note that all personal settings are now stored in an fldigi.files sub-folder within the installation folder you have created above.

Maybe this provides a way to get going again. Needless to say that you must suitably set or reply to Windows access restrictions in the process, in order to not be blocked from doing what you intend to do.

Good Luck!

If I'm not mistaken there's a simple way, please look at the attached screenshot.

Unchecking items there, the topmost is relevant for your question, allows global settings instead of (possibly) per mode and even band selections.

Hope this will work for you.

I own an old MacBook pro -a 2012 model to be exact. What is the oldest version of the operating system that the current version of FLDI/FlRIG will work with? Thanks in advance for the answer.

...at any rate, I always have EditPad Pro running when I am using fldigi, and it's easy to copy (ctrl-a) any text of interest and paste (ctrl-v) into EPP. I frequently do this so that I can do post-game reviews of nets. In fact, I supply a copy of EditPad Lite with every portable install so that everyone can do this. Of course, each OS also has a plain text editor of some kind, but I use EPP regularly, so I am familiar with it.

- before a blue text entry pane is cleared by fldigi, the text is saved (overwriting previous saved text), perhaps also saving the insert point position,
- or alternatively just keep unsent text (overwriting previous saved text), which may be easier.
- a menu option to insert saved/unsent text in blue entry pane.
Again time to praise your fine work with the FL suite!

Re: AFC Button greyed out / drift

Hello David,

Just a quick update regarding the greyed out AFC Button + Frequency Drift issue.

After making yet another fresh install (from scratch, only using the defaults from the fldigi setup file), I experienced just the same situation as Kim had described:

- AFC Button greyed out - not reacting to input, regardless of the chosen mode.

- AFC active (but this state was invisible in terms of the AFC Button 'light').

- Using (e.g.) MFSK and with the SQL slider (next to the vertical green signal indicator) set sufficiently low, AFC started veering off the set frequency in a random manner.

I have found 3 options to get rid of the resulting AFC induced frequency drift, as far as I have tested it here:

- Temporary:
Just set the SQL slider all the way to maximum. If you need to decode anyways, toggle SQL to OFF, keeping the slider at the upper limit.
While decoding strong signals, this may not be enough to keep SQL from opening and thus also causing AFC drift. Thus just a quick temporary fix.

- Upon Request:
Create a Macro containing the command <AFC:off>. Whenever you run this macro, the AFC will be turned off, regardless of the AFC Button and its greyed-out state.
Alternative: as before, but use the command <AFC:t>. Whenever you run this macro, the AFC will be toggled ON <--> OFF. <AFC:on> is the 3rd command in this respect.

- General Fix:
Open the 'Save Parameters' Dialog via Menu - Config - Misc - Save Parameters. Deactivate 'AFC control'. Save Config and restart FLdigi.
This difference is found in the 'fldigi.def-xml' configuration file, in the key <AFC_BY_MODE>1</AFC_BY_MODE>, which should rather be <AFC_BY_MODE>0</AFC_BY_MODE> to work.
The AFC Button should now be accessible and function as expected.
Note: the default light green Button 'light' color may be hard to see. Change it to a higher contrast color via Menu - Colors-Fonts - Buttons-Menus: AFC (e.g. dark blue).

I attach a screenshot showing this parameter, which I assume may be (linked to) the culprit. I hope this will help you find a general bug fix within FLdigi.

Meanwhile, I have also informed Kim accordingly to hopefully provide a temporary solution for his upcoming SW Radiogram program production.

Thanks and best regards

Tobias

Re: Lost text

Hello Poul,

I would have to add that to the software. In the meantime you might try this immediately after entering the text:
  • control-A
  • control-C
  • start the TX and if you lose the text, enter "control-V"

Hopeall is well with you Folks and say Hello to Skip for me.
OK! I have a problem with our Clubs IC-756pro III.
I have the latest build for FLrig but cannot get it to comm with Windows 11.
I am using the West Mountain Rigblaster Advantage Interface which has CI-V built into it.
Now just as a FYI, I have the JS8Call and FT-8 Modes running with this setup and NO problems.
As a FYI I have here at home the IC-756(Non-Pro) and have FLrig running just fine with that.
Setting are as follows:
Rig IC-756PRO III
Com5
Baud 19200
Stop bit 1
CIV# 0x6E
I have verified the settings in the Radios Menu and they all seem to be right.
I did take some pics of the screens but unable to attach them here (Operator ERROR)
I am going to be going back down to the Club House, 30minutes away with the Alpha Build 2.0.05.93.
I will run a Event Log if I still have problems and send them off to you.
If anybody else has any ideas I would appreciate any feed back.

Re: Rookie Pulling What Hair I Have Out #mode #settings #FT-710 #help

Ron,

Well, I attempted to work RTTY all day long. I'm burnt out now. During all this I ran across one reference that RTTY is always LSB/Data-L. But I tried upper and lower on all bands starting on 10m then 12, 15, 17, 20, 30, and 40m. I got a partial copy on one station, enough to get his call and attempted to call him back. I got one each heard reports on reverse beacon on 15 and 20m.

Then randomly FLRig would just die. Grrrrrrr

When I tried to use the clusters on Log4OM it would switch to USB, so I don't know if those are just bad reports, or..... that is where they were? I still tried both upper and lower.

Inline image

Zero QSOs for the day. I even just CQed both upper and lower on each band hoping someone would come to me. And with so many stations working RTTY today, frustration doesn't quite cover it. I would try JS8 as they have a QSO party this weekend, but RTTY is blanketing the bands.

I think I'm going to go have a beer and shut down the station. This shouldn't be THAT hard!!!

First off, thank you so much for taking the time to try to help me.

The FLDigi version is 4.2.06, I am running Windows 11 and it has not changed. The FT-710 uses the RF Gain/SQL. RF gain is at max. I'm not using the pre-amps at this time, only IPO.

I changed the audio settings as requested.

Inline image

I did the TX Generate, saved it the desktop. Then hit transmit. I got the RTTY in my headset, and the text appears in red in the sent pane. There was nothing on the waterfall at all. However, it did save the audio file and I confirmed it by playing it outside of FLDigi. The audio in the bar at the bottom does respond appropriately when I transmitted it. It also responded if I talked into the mic.

Now here is where I get confused. You instructions were:

"Do not change the modem used to make recording during playback."

I left it on the headset, and did the audio playback. I got nothing. So should I have changed the settings back to the CODEX or left it on the speaker at that point? After that, I changed it back to my CODEX and tried again. Now I have nothing. It will throw a carrier, but no modulation.

Ok, I changed the configuration in FLDigi to use FLRig(2.0.05), not Hamlib. Switching to Hamlib was the only thing I had changed in my quest, so I went back to FLRig. Obviously FLDigi doesn't like the Hamlib for some reason, but I eliminated that.

I did a test of the radio then using VarAC, successful.

Ok, brought up FLDigi/FLRig. Tuned to an appropriate freq, transmitted CQ. The radio successfully transmitted the CQ. Here is a screen capture of my FLDigi.

Inline image

So, the issue isn't with my CODEX or windows settings. It has to be that I have screwed up the actual controls of FLDigi from the main screen. I have tried to play with the various sliders and controls along the bottom with no change to the waterfall. And there are so many other modes discussed in the manual that I have not successfully figured out the correct settings for RTTY. Hell, I can't even get someone to give me a straight answer on what mode the FT-710 is supposed to be in, LSB, Data L, or RTTY L (though this makes sense for bandpass) but without a waterfall to track in and try to receive, all I have is the waterfall on the radio, that has not been successful.

So there I am.

A little more information is required to assist.

What OS version do you have. Did you change the OS version from the last time it worked.

What version of FLDIGI are you using.

You can get garbage output in the absents of a signal, that does not necessarily mean anything other then to say that the squelch is set low (Radio and/or FLDIGI).

Here is a simple test to rule out a few things.

Under Configure->Soundcard->Device settings (FLDIGI) select "Microphone" for Capture and "Speakers" for playback.

Place any headset/speakers to the computer with volume turned up in order to listen.

Copy this (following text, between the ----- lines)

------------------------
To be on not to be that is the question ^r
------------------------

Paste it into the transmit panel.

Do not hit transmit button yet, and turn off the connected transmitter if it's on.

From the FLDIGI's menu select "File->Audio->TX generate". When it asks for a save location, note file name and save it to the desktop.

Press the T/R (on FLDIGI).

Do you hear digital audio output from the speakers/headset and see a digital signal on the waterfall?

From the FLDIGI's menu select "File->Audio->TX generate" a second time (turning it off).

Do not change the modem used to make recording during playback.

From the FLDIGI's menu select "File->Audio->Playback" locate the audio file saved. Default name: generate.wav on desktop. Once found mouse click the file, and press open.

You will be asked if you want play the file indefinitely, your call as to which.

Do you see a digital signal on the water fall that matches what you sent? In the RX panel do you see the following text? "To be on not to be that is the question".

Select "File->Audio->Playback" a second time to disable indefinite playback.

If you have a microphone connected, when speaking into it do you see any changes in the waterfall that a signal is present and correlates with your speaking?

If so, then the likely issue follows:

The Audio capture/playback device is not set to the correct device.
Which might imply,
a) Select the correct audio device from the configure dialog (FLDIGI).
b) You need to set permission for FLDIGI to have access to said device.
c) You need a device driver is order have access to said device.
d) Cable/Interface that connects between your radio and computer is; missing, loosely connected, or defective is some fashion.
e) The radio is not set to take input/output from the computer interface. (Edit:Added)

Don't know how much more I can assist you as I'm a hand on person in order to troubleshoot issues. But, let me know if you need help on the stated corrective suggestions.

Robert

Re: Earlier Version of Fldigi

Hi Ken,

At this point I am baffled. I have no such issues in Windows 11 with any of my 3 primary radios on an MSI "gamer" desktop box.

It sounds to me like you are picking up receive audio through the microphone array and that is what you are seeing on the fldigi waterfall. I have seen both Win 10 and Win 11 "mislabel" the sound devices (on other laptops) do that in spite of what the device labels said they were. Most times I could find the real drivers and use them in programs I needed them in. In those cases I could not, I have had to completely de-install fldigi, ALL sound devices, and the "Virtual COM Ports", unplug every thing, then let Windows find its primary sound drivers for the laptop's built in hardware, then reinstall the rig COM port driver, then go back and reconfigure fldigi from the ground up.

This happened on an older HP laptop (Win 10) and a new "generic" big-box store laptop (Win 11). I have not played with the ASUS equipment since I got burned back in the Windows 8 days by several of their BT dongle drivers that played absolute havoc with what I was trying to do at the time. The main culprit was a piece of the BT driver system that overrode the internals in Windows and would not let go of some of the hardware that I needed access to. It was impossible to de-install, so I had to back up all the data and wipe the drive and reinstall Windows.

I am sorry I can't be of more help.

So the radio volume is too loud. When I transit, the sound comes out the laptop speakers. The laptop microphone picks up back ground sound and I see it on the water fall.
I believe the only way to remedy all these problems is to install windows 10.
The windows Input volume for 2-USB Audio CODEC is at 100%.
I set it 50% but didn't have effect on signal in the water fall.
