Shifting Nightmare that wont quit.
16
Got my Willys back today. Im going nuts. Just replaced the dang clutch, and the throwout bearing, and transfer external case and some gear repair inside the transfer case... When I depress the clutch pedal, going into 1st or R every time I have to wait at least 3 to 5 seconds for the flywheel or whatever to it is to stop spinning so it accepts the shifting without grinding. EVERY. TIME. However if I first shift into 2nd and then into 1st, it accepts the shift w/o grinding or having to pause the 3 seconds. They played with the rpms, they played with clutch adjustments. To where now the clutch is set so as Im releasing the pedal there's nothing, nothing, nothing and then at the top of the release I got about an inch or 2 and ... woosh it suddenly engages. No problems shifting into 2 or 3rd, or back. Any ideas anyone? Im getting desperate does anyone know old school transmision wizard in the Los Angeles area? HELLLLPPP!

Starting help and question...
Electrical connections can be protected with di-electric silicone ignition grease. It protects by insulating bare metal from moisture and air. A thin coat can be applied to the separate components, then assembled -or- just applied after assembly. An acid brush is an easy way to apply. I use it on old and new vehicles. Battery posts, frame grounds, and lamp bases if you have a problem with moisture getting inside of lenses. As others stated, you have to start with surfaces clean of paint and corrosion. Good luck with your project! ¨C Joe

Know of a place I might find a used 57 Wagon Transfer Case?
22
Hey Gents.... Found out my 57 Wagon transfer case is cracked. Booo. Wondering if it can be repair welded (that is, if it's not made of pot metal) or if there's a recommended salvage yard I might find one of those? Thanks

[External] [WillysTech] L6-226 for sale???
8
Don't know where you are located. In the midwest, Jasper Engines has a good reputation for remanufactured engines. Expensive but have a good warranty. If they can do it you will likely need to ship your old engine to them as the demand for flathead 226s is not large. They generally work through local shops. It's getting hard to find mechanics/machinists that have experience with old engines. Dan

L6-226 for sale???
2
Guys, It's been a while since I've logged into the group - my bad. I've got a '61 pickup with the 226 that I rebuilt many moons ago. This winter I finally started having issues with the motor itself. Being 23 years older and perhaps just a wee less joint dexterity than I had last time, rather than rebuild the engine I got the OK from my other half to replacing it. Anyone have or know of a source for a fair to middling condition flathead 226? Thanks, Skip

A movie
On Amazon prime, there is a 1995 movie called "Three Wishes". There's a 2 WD wagon used by the family, sounds and looks stock, same colors as the one I rode around in when I was small. Recommended for the car watching, anyway. Dan -- Dan 53 2wd Wagon Eugene, OR

Wagon trailer hitch
Here's yet another detail that needs to be finished on our wagon. I've had this "custom" hitch for years - it needed to be thin enough to fit between the oversized gas tank and the valance. The backup light is in a poor position but should do the job. Wires need to be connected.

Argentina to Alaska trip
5
Gang, I stumbled across a couple from Argentina who are driving to Alaska in a late 50s Willys wagon... L6-226 engine, 2wd It crosed my mind that when they cross through the US, we could be a support network till they make it to Canada. I'll post the links so you can see who they are. The reason I spotted them was Willys in their pics. https://www.youtube.com/hashtag/viajarvalelapena Now those of you who know Spanish could ask them about the route they plan to take through the US. What's going on?
15
I assume, at least for some of us, it's cold and not so much fun in an unheated shop space right now. Nothing colder than 38 degrees and raining, like it is here this morning. Been away from the Willys for a while, working on a boat build instead. Got the wagon out for one long run last summer, back roads to the coast, and back, no problems. Lots of waves, with all the fingers, even. You may remember the picture of Jim Russell's poor, burned up jeep, from the fire in the McKenzie valley last summer. Lots of trees burned, or were damaged. I managed to buy some clear western red cedar, full dimension 2X4 and 2X6's for this boat project, which consisted of responding to a Craigslist ad for cedar; said what I wanted, and they cut it with their little bandsaw mill the next day. The logs were from a small property up the McKenzie. The bark was blackened, but the wood is fine, though there is a little bug damage. It's in the basement now, with a fan on it, with a dehumidifier going. Doing a weight watchers weigh in once a week, until the boards get to the approximate weight of kiln dried lumber. Each piece lost at least a pound in the first week, with one being below the kiln dried moisture level. If this trend continues, they all should be ready to use in 2-3 weeks. When my Willys was young, the retired neighbor that lived on the Siuslaw river below us split cedar shakes from logs he'd pull out of the river- free driftwood, in other words. Not anymore. A lot of the cedar available now is cut young, and knotty. Which is great for fences. Less so for pretty oars and seats. This picture is of the shake splitting operation; background is the Siuslaw River bridge, built by the WPA during the depression, with the city of Florence across the river; 1964. Low tide. Staging to sell a Willys
2
This is what effective staging is all about: https://portland.craigslist.org/clc/cto/d/portland-1963-willys-wagon/7262246077.html 1963 willys wagon - cars & trucks - by owner - vehicle automotive sale 1963 or 1964 Willys project wagon. I believe that most parts are there. The original engine 6 cyl is in the garage This is a project car bring a trailer. There is also a CJ5 about the same vintage... portland.craigslist.org Be sure to look at the second picture for the full effect. A Willys complete with sheets, maybe? Might be good, though, looks like original paint. Dan -- Dan 53 2wd Wagon Eugene, OR

How long until EV conversions become commonplace?
14
As I've said before, electric conversions for various Willys models should make sense if systems are available as a "package" (with or without battery). It seems to me that this is inevitable if enthusiasts have the up-front money to do the job. Nissan Leaf drivetrains and batteries are being adapted to the Morris Minor in the UK, EV West in California has come a long way with VW Beetle and Bus conversions in recent years. And now GM apparently has seen 'the writing on the wall'... Chevy Bolt drivetrain and battery complete systems should be available within a year. When you consider that to rebuild a stock engine and transmission is becoming far more expensive than just a few years ago, when the time comes, I'd be interested in electrifying our Land Rover Discovery or Willys wagon. Even our Suzuki Sidekick 4 door might be a candidate but it's probably not heavily built enough for the extra weight. It all depends on cost of course. Pavel up North (source, Ars Techica)

57 Wagon Headliner....
7
Hello Gents... I¡¯m just starting to look at what options are around for replacing the headliner material on a 57 Wagon. What is wind lace? Isn¡¯t that the piling-material tubing that runs around the doors? And if I have all the original parts ¨Cthen I don¡¯t need everything in this kit from Kaiser¡¯s right? I just need the material? https://www.kaiserwillys.com/complete-headliner-kit-off-white-fits-46-64-station-wagon Wondering do I buy a prefab material that seems cut to size... (although none in the color I want (off white) Or do I find a seamstress to do it? Any suggestions as to what material people have used with good results?

Door grab refurbish.
2
Our Willys needs many finishing touches - here's one that finally received some attention. I saved the old vinyl fabric from the seat backs when they were reupholstered in the '90s. So long as you don't look closely, my attempt at recovering these inside door grabs doesn't look too bad... The original covering can be compared to the "new" in the first picture. The second picture shows how the vinyl was attached in the factory 55 years ago. The 3rd picture shows the new components. Unfortunately, I cut the pieces a little too small because I didn't take into account that the new foam seems to be much thicker than the original. C'est la vie ! Pavel up North.
