Re: [WT] F134 Cooling Circuit
Early this morning I removed the thermostat completely. After running for about 10 minutes I could feel heat on the top of the radiator so I knew water was circulating now. The needle on my gauge was about 3/4 of the way to hot and seemed to stay in that area. I understand that this is a relative position and may vary from vehicle to vehicle. I was able to hold on to the large hoses without burning my hand. I could keep my hand on the top of the radiator for about 3 seconds before it became to hot. Is this about right? This isn't overheating is it? Thanks, John --- In WillysTech@..., "Mighty Mo" <cj2a@...> wrote: John,

Well, the thermostat was indeed installed upside down. I corrected it and started the engine. In about two minutes the engine heated again (the needle went to H on the gauge) and again the hose from the thermostat was cool to touch while the others were too hot to touch. I probably need a new thermostat. What is the correct one and can they be purchased locally at NAPA or will I have to order one from a jeep supply house?
Mine is stamped 192.

Thanks for help gratefully recieved in the past.
I have a new question: The pipe that carries oil to the oil filter is connected to the the front most hole on the engine block. Is this a requirement or can I change the position to the second port from the front? This is because I feel the oil pipe will lay better fromt that port as it is not in the way of the fuel pump.
The fuel pump is hard enough as it is to remove (the front most bolt is difficult to access)without impeding access further with a pipe.
BTW the pipes I have are not original but made up at a local hydraulic shop.
Many Thanks

I opened this valve and find the hose connected to get hot fairly quickly. I then felt the large hose going to the bottom of the radiator and it too is hot. However, the large hose to the top of the radiator is cool. The gauge shows the engine getting hot in only
a couple of minutes so I shut it down. Since this is the first time
I put coolant in it is there something I am missing?

Re: [WT] F134 Cooling Circuit
Well, the thermostat was indeed installed upside down. I corrected it and started the engine. In about two minutes the engine heated again (the needle went to H on the gauge) and again the hose from the thermostat was cool to touch while the others were too hot to touch. I probably need a new thermostat. What is the correct one and can they be purchased locally at NAPA or will I have to order one from a jeep supply house? Mine is stamped 192. Re: [WT] F134 Cooling Circuit
John,
While you have it out drill an 1/8" hole in the flange to allow air to bubble out. When you first fill with coolant you can get some air pockets and the L134 can run a little hot till they all get out. The hole helps speed this up. Make sure you keep topping off the coolant level until it finds the level it likes.

The non-Robertshaw type should have the wax capsule facing the engine. The side of the thermostat with the bridge in it that centers the wax capsule and valve should face the radiator. The Robertshaw type, working from fading memory, should have the bellows end facing the engine.

On the rear of my engine is a water valve that directs flow to the heater in my cab. From the heater another hose runs to the water pump.
I do not have my heater mounted yet but want to drive my truck. I connected a single hose directly from the valve to the water pump. It
is necessary for this valve to be opened all the time for engine cooling to take place? I'm not certain if they opened in the winter
months and closed it completely during the hot summer months when cab
heat was not needed. Would someone please educate me on this matter.
I closed it completely and it seems my engine got hot fast.
Thanks, John

John, Your correct. The valve was the first way to control the heat during the summer months. The reason it heats faster bypassing it is the heater core acts like a second radiator when the valve is open. Re: [WT] Idea going round in my head... [Hybrid conversion]
Hi Tobias, For a modification of my parking brake I made a print to size of the parking brake system, including part of the back of the transfercase. For whatever it¡¯s worth I¡¯ll mail it to you. May be it¡¯ll be of help for starting sketching. Regards, Robert _____ Fr?n: WillysTech@... [mailto:WillysTech@...] F?r Tobias Gogolin Skickat: den 21 september 2007 21:14 Till: WillysTech@... ?mne: Re: [WT] Idea going round in my head... [Hybrid conversion] Thanks Robert! Its true and I think I found the ideal spot for where the motor could go! Right next to the drive shaft to the rear differential. behind the transfercase there is plenty of space on my CJ7! The motor could be geared to the axis where the drive shaft connects this way one would have the option to drive electrically with Transfercase or gearbox in neutral, and one could even do electric 4WD! Those Briggs and Straton etek motors or newer Perm(anent Magnet) 132 are amazingly light and small at 8-15 HP. I have to start make some spread sheets on torque from standstill, max speed and potential range. Of course I expect to find problems there... I know that most electric conversions replace the motor and use the gear box to gear for torque or speed as necessary! This etek went for just over 300 bucks... . < STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=130153369694&rd=1> com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=003&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT& viewitem=&item=130153369694&rd=1 On 9/19/07, Carla van Linge en Robert Verheij < carla.robert@ <mailto:carla.robert%40telia.com> telia.com> wrote: I think a very interesting idea, although not something I am considering for my Willys.
However, in a previous job I was working on using a stirling engine (close to a hot-air engine) for use in a bus, so that explains my interest.
Disadvantage of connecting the electrical motor to either the front or rear axle is the added unsprung weight, and that the asymmetric weight of the E-motor on the axle will cause the axle to rotate (leaf springs are flexible by the nature of the beast). And adding more weight to the axle will also increase the tendency of the axle "to jump around the place" when the road gets worse. For me it would be a NoNo to add any substantial weight directly to the axle.
But what about this? There may be another point to connect the E-motor to.
And that is the end of the transmission (of the T90). There you can connect an overdrive to, so an electrical motor should also be possible. The E-motor would always be spinning, but depending on the mode, it would act as a generator to load the batteries, or as the engine driving the car alone or even in combination with the gasoline engine. Extra boost! Extra advantage: the E-motor is not connected to the axle.
Stay in touch, very interested to hear where it will be going, and I am sure the Willys Gods will smile at the experiment.

Hey everybody! I'm new to this list, just subscribed, and im happy to see how active this group is!
With rising fuel prizes and all I have been thinking... What if I removed the rear drive shaft and placed an electric motor there
Then I could drive on batteries for the short local hauls and when I run down the battery I can simply lock the front hubs and continue driving with the normal motor...
Anybody ever try that?
I have an 84 CJ7 with the 4.2l inline 6
