Ground Straps on a 1951 Truck

wrhickey2002

Hello,
I am installing my wiring harness and getting the ground straps in
place. I have run my negative battery cable directly to a starter
mounting bolt as per a Dr. Vern modifcation that I saw here some time
ago. I believe these trucks also had a strap from the engine block to
the lower engine mounting plate to provide a ground for the frame ? Is
that correct ? or would it be wise to not bother with the factory
engine to frame connection and just run another strap from the starter
mounting bolt directly to the lower engine mount plate ? Also, what
about the body ? Did the factory provide a strap from the cab body to
the frame ? If so, where were the conections made ?

Thanks in advance !

Bill

Re: [WT] Shells and Campers for Willys Pickups

The low sides of the bed make it look like it should take a special
camper but any slide in for a full size pickup will fit. I used an 8'
slide in that had been used in a 58 Ford. When I sold it the guy that
bought it used it in a 68 F-100. Measure the distance from the bed floor
to the top of the cab and compare it to the camper.

Floor mats for CJ-5

Doug Wilbrandt

Guys(and Willys Ladies),
I am looking for a full front, thick vinyl or rubberlike floor mat for my '62 &'67 CJ-5's. I have seen them for MB's and have purchased them for my wagons but have not seen them for the older CJ's. I still use the '67 Half cab for plowing the drive and would like to have a full mat. Any leads?

Brake Problems

I have a '48 Willy CJ2a, w/ stock brakes. Hasn't been driven for about
2 years. I am having a problem with the brakes. I have to literally
stand on them to get it to stop. Stopping fast is out of the
question. Have read the TM on it and it is not very helpful on
diagnosing the problem. Any help from the experts is greatly
appreciated. Contacted Willys Overland and was told could be anything.

Thanks,
Chet

Re: [WT] L6-161 Lightning Motor Question...

I'll second not to use an easy out, if the bolt is really stuck its too
easy to break one, and that causes all kinds of hurt!
If there is a little bit sticking out you might try taking a nut put
it over the bit sticking up and welding it, this does two things it
allows you to use a wrench to remove the broken bolt, and the heat from
welding may help to loosen the bolt, I've used this method several
times with success.

Re: [WT] Re: Shells and Campers for Willys Pickups

The bed floor is 4 feet wide and about 6.5 feet long. Not exactly what
I'd consider "long". Not sure what year Nissan you're referring to but
the 80-86 models the bed floor is barely over 3 feet wide between the
wheel wells. The short bed version in those years is about the same
length as the Willys pickup bed.

Re: [WT] L6-161 Lightning Motor Question...

Kurt Valentine

I would be very reluctant to use an easy out having seen too many broken off
easy outs stuck in the middle of bolts. The easy out is hardened steel and
almost impossible to drill out. If the bolt won't come out after liberal use
of PB Blaster and then the use of a bolt remover like you described. I would
just drill out the bolt and then rethread the hole. You can try using left
hand drill bits starting with a small bit and moving up. Sometimes the heat
and vibration from drilling will allow the left handed bit to actually
unthread the bolt.

On 10/2/07, Harold Miller <kb1zq5@...> wrote:

Thanks for the advice, I think I can grab it with one of those screw
removers, the ones that look like a nut.

My main concern was that the bolts appear to go thru the head and into the
block.

My L134 the thermostat housing does not go into the block; so I was not
expecting this one to .

I got all but these two bolts off and ready to take the head off.

Trying to see how bad the interior of the motor is. I can't spin it with a
socket and ratchet.

I have had this problem on several bolts that were flush with the block...
I would try using an easy out, I use craftsman but I'm sure there are
other
brands available. just drill the bolt a little and the easy out will do
the
rest!
Hope this helps!

I have a '51 Willys Wagon; original motor and drive train. just starting
to

tear down.

Trying to pull the head off my L6-161 motor and have all the head nuts
off.

Won't come loose on the front.

Question is; do the thermostat housing bolts go all the way into the

block???

They broke off trying to take the housing out, but there is still about
3/8

of an inch sticking up above the head. If need be I can drill them out and

then re-tap later.

Any help welcomed.

Re: [WT] Home made dry sump system for an F Head ?

Kurt Valentine

That is how a dry sump system works. I would think you have plenty of room
in the oil pan for the scavenger pump, but where would run the line from the
oil tank back to the engine? My Porsche 911 uses a dry sump system and the
oil dipstick is in the tank and not the engine.

On 10/3/07, Tony G <tonyg@...> wrote:

How would you go about dry sumping an F head ?

All I need is a scavenge pump in the sump area , run it to a
deaerator / collector tank and then into an oil storage tank and then
plumb back to the stock pump , correct ?

I like the idea of an external oil tank as I can increase the oil
system capacity easily

I hate sitting at crazy angles on the trail holding revs with no oil
pressure !
