1951 Willys Wagon UpGrades

John Millard

Hi, I just purchased a 1951 Willys Wagon with a 350 Chevy engine. The
rest of the drive train is original including an added overdrive. My
wife and I are avid campers and we want to be able to go several
hundred miles on camping trips. We can only go about 50mph, any faster
and it sounds like the whole machine is going to blow-up. I have
called around and found that putting 4.27 gears into the front & rear
axles will only give me a few miles per hour. I was also told that the
tranny would most likly not hold up pulling a camping trailer. I am
wondering what the best recommendatiuon(s) is/are for making a more
reliable Willys Wagon for camping trips. Chevy S-10? The Camping
trailer weighs 1980lbs empty and perhaps only 2400lbs loaded. My ears
are open to suggestions,
Thanks, John & Kathy Millard, Arvada Colorado

Too cool! I'll be hitting google shortly. Well that pretty much
covers everything, then. Well, ALMOST.

I know the eviromental controls will be tricky, but come on: isn't
about time we got a Willys into space?

--- In WillysTech@..., <aussierob2@...> wrote:

Donny, Are you saying that jeeps were converted to everything
other than an aircraft.
Because there were two version of the flying jeep.
They used the helicopter principle.
A tower was built between the driver and the passenger seats.
That tower housed the main rotor support bearings.

If you search the internet you will possibly find the pictures of the
two versions.
I have no idea if these things actually flew ???

They were called the "FLEEP" for Flying Jeep.

It was tried sometime during the second world war.

hello,
does anyone know if templates are avaliable to determine where the
proper mounting holes are to be located? my jeep has a multitude of
drilled holes for accessories that were added during the years and i
can't tell which are original, and which are not.
thank you, alex

Re: [WT] Extra Parts

And they could have been stock - they match what was on a set of NOS
mirrors I had for a while. They were listed for CJs as well as pickups
and wagons, etc.

hello chris,
thank you for your response. the more I survey the jeep, the more I am sure that it was a military jeep. over the next few days I will try to gently clean the paint on the hood and see if there are any numbers. the delivery plate reads 4/19/1945. the frame plate reads the same serial # as the dash plate.
I noticed that some of the photos I have seen on the net that there is a smaller fourth plate closer to the center line of the jeep. Would you happen to know what information it contained? thank you again, I'll keep you posted if you like.

Hi Alex,

MB's came with the recessed headlights in the grill so it is all probable that the previous owner, or one of the previous owners changed it over to a civi grill. One of the jeep dealerships in my area would make this change for a customer back in the early 50's according to one of my neighbors. He had a MB from the local Army Air corp base, but didn't like how dim the lights were. The dealership changed the lights and grill over for him. Both he, and I, wish he still had that old jeep. :)

Does your MB still have the data tags on the dash? Does it have the tool boxes built into the rear quarter panels? Lack of tail gate?

What other changes did they do to it?

Can you tell MB's are my favorite??? :)

Re: [WT] Passenger side wiper blade..........

Sean Collins

Mike:

Even WiIlys didn't sell the blade separately, but it would be nice if someone did. The blade is hollow-riveted to the arm yoke, so would probably have been considered "non-user replaceable".

Willys offered only 1 part number, 663648, for ARM and BLADE assembly.

The blade is indeed wider than the typical hook blade as used on the driver side: .225" vs .160". Exactly 9.5" long:

photo: <>

From a quick dimensional check between photos, it looks like Pete DeBellas repro is exactly the same ('cept OD :-). If he has the blade by itself, let us know!

Sean

Thanks Chris....and I will contact Mr DiBella.....but in my case all I need
is the blade ITSELF. I have all parts except the actual blade. Its a simple
straight blade....no springs or anything fancy...but I know I`m not gonna find
that at any Kragen or AutoZone. Thanks again....Mike

Not sure, but look at under MB hand operated wipers. They have a single hand operated one that might do the trick.

Hand wiper, this is the single wiper for
MB-GPW, CJ2A is an exact reproduction.

Price $35.00

click the link and then go down about half the page. On the left will be the dual hand held wiper system, and on the right will be the single.

Good luck!

I know it's scheduled to run in Cleveland this week, WBGU (also my
PBS station) was mentioned by WGTE personnel as being slated to run
it, as is the Cinci PBS. Not sure about Columbus. Worst case, you'd
have to buy it from WGTE (consider it a charitable contribution, I
guess). FYI, I volunteered my time and pics. Stay tuned, I guess,
Mighty Mo can give you a more unbiased review, but I assure you PA

I'm even more feeling left out :( Being in Western Pennsylvania, not far from both Butler and Pittsburgh, I feel a double irony. First Bantam in Butler submitted the first prototype quarter ton vehicle to the Army. Secondly, Pittsburgh is the home of the first publicly supported TV station, and it was also the fifth educational station to sign on in 1954. The program is NOT listed on their schedule. :(

{I'll let the comment on Jeeps and Ohio slide for now. :) }

If you are outside Ohio, it will be a while before you can see,
"Jeep: Steel Soldier" on your local PBS station. It was produced by
WGTE Toledo as part of an Ohio PBS effort to make documentaries on
Ohio WWII topics to compliment the Ken Burns "The War" series. It
will run first at all the Ohio PBS stations. Makes sense. Jeep is
about as Ohio as it gets, especially for a Toledo station. I was told
that other PBS stations around the country may pick it up as they
choose.

Shortly after it airs, I don't know how shortly, they will start
selling DVDs which can be purchased from the station (wgte.org) and
likely from the main PBS site as well at some point.

I hesitate to review something I was involved with, but I think it
hits the mark. Accurate, just the right amount of enthusiasm, a fair
shake for each of the three companies that helped develop the quarter-
ton and some pictures and footage you may not have seen.

Hi Alex!
Not sure about that fourth plate, but I'm sure someone on here may. It might be the body tub tag? I'm not sure. Take your time on sanding the hood. Very gently, and wet sand it if you can. I was able to find the hood numbers for my 55 M38A1 this way. And I have found out that my 51 M38 was a "NG" or National Guard jeep, as it had the lettering under about 5 other colors on the rear bumperette. Sounds like you definitely have a war jeep! Congrats!! I am allready very jealous!

Yes, please keep me posted! If you have any pics of this new jeep of yours, please send them along to Bullseye@... my home e-mail address.
