Re: What's going on?
Sorry on my response as I had switched over to 12v. Didn't get that this was a 6v discussion. On Sun, Mar 2, 2025, 10:03?PM jeepeers85213 via <bilwilm=[email protected]> wrote:

Re: What's going on?
I've asked? around and no one supports a 6 volt solid state F-134 distributor replacement, I tweaked up to a 8 volt battery. Got 9.4 at good rpm runs great with extra head light reach. Still would really like to go a solid state distributor.?

One minor caution for those considering ditching mechanical points in favor of electronic. I tried a conversion kit on my 6 volt CJ-2A (L134) some time ago, maybe 20 years back. It ran great but maybe 10% of the time it would not start. On those occasions it would sometime fire up when I released the starter. Push starts worked, but of course this was not always practical.
?
After some serious head-scratching and precision use of foul language, I finally figured out the cause. Under the massive electric draw of the starter, battery voltage drops down around 5V. This is perfectly normal and not a fault. Unfortunately, that was also the lower limit for the electronics to function. Most times all was good and the engine fired right up, as available voltage hovered just above the magic limit. But if voltage dipped just enough, no joy.
?
The starter operation seemed the same, so it wasn't like a fault dragging down the voltage. Normal operation left very little margin for the ignition to fire, that's all. Those times the engine fired after releasing the starter? That was a recovery of battery power as the crankshaft was still spinning down, but you could not count on it.
?
Sorry, I do not remember which brand that was. Newer products may not have this problem.
?
Hope all are doing well.

Re: What's going on?
Dan,?
On another Willys forum I promised never to mention this ignition option again... so feel free to ignore the following on WillysTech!? If you are interested in getting away from the original design and going completely electronic, there is the distributorless design from Ford.? The advantages are extensive but I do not know if you can use a 6 volt system to power it.? Should you be interested, just Google EDIS from Autosport Labs.? I converted our Tornado engined wagon years back and have been pleased with the results.

Sorry I didn't mention I was looking for a solid state replacement, my dist still works. First street offers a solid state 6 volt replace meant for Ford model T's...

Received the steering box back from Red-Head.? Too cold for me to want to re install right away.? They send them back with "no play", and adjusting the sector shaft screw voids their warranty.? Also, they send the unit filled with 00 grease/lubricant.?? Or
double ought as they called it. I worked hard to get all the lubricant out before mailing to avoid leaking all over the place.? Better seals now.? The tech called me during the process, he does all or most of the Willys ones that come in.? 6 employees when
he started there 12 years ago,? 70 now.? Lots of steering gears, Internet makes their business possible.

Re: brake light switch
¿ªÔÆÌåÓý
Mike, thanks for the offer, have a spare now, I'm hoping the "compatible" one will be the last one needed for a long time.? An old one is likely to have the same problem with the silicone fluid.? I went with the silicone after replacing the corroded and rusty
brake lines and master & brake cylinders.? The switch has failed a couple of times over 30 years, though the vehicle hasn't gone far in that time.? Probably the regular brake fluid would have been fine if I drained and replaced it periodically. ?

John,
I found this copy of the Standard one, from the you know who country, that says it is compatible with silicone fluid, so I ordered one.? It's easier to get to with the steering column out, as it is right now.? The rest of the braking system is fine with? silicone.??

As long as the size of the nipple on the switch fits you can use any one
you can find. Heck, you could even use a pipe thread adapter in a pinch, if there's enough room. Go to one of our local auto parts store with the old switch in hand and see what they've got that'll work with silicone brake fluid. It's nice to be able to read what's on the box before buying. Too bad Knecht's closed! <sigh> Of the remaining stores I've found that the counter people at NAPA seem to know what they're doing: Is the silicone brake fluid compatible with the other ancient technology in you brakes?
