Re: Thinking about NDT's
Driving my '3A, equipped with NDT tires, on slick roads is an "adventure".? When I installed the Detroit Locker (rear axle) and Dana Powr-Lok (front axle), the adventure changed to an "epic saga".? :-)
The drivetrain is otherwise stock.? I can't? imagine what it would be like with more than "60 screaming horses" under the hood. Eric |
Re: Thinking about NDT's
Try reviewing the early CJ sales brochures. They show an odd directional "V" style tread as well as the military NDT type. Here's a 1949 brochure that covered the 2A and?and the 3A.
Here's a 1946/47 2A brochure:?? I don't know what your road experience is with NDT's but mine over many years is they are military off road designed tires and at higher speeds on paved roads that are wet or icy they can be very dangerous. The WWII NDT's fare worse then the post WWII NDCC's but neither is safe at 50 MPH on paved slippery roads. |
Re: Thinking about NDT's
I bought these NDT tires for my 43 Willys MB. I don’t know where they are made. (I read somewhere that they are not actually made by Firestone.)

So,
When I was in college, and when I acquired my $200 Willys 2 wd wagon between Noti and Elmira OR),? 1972 or so, I lived in a little house between 23rd and 24th street on Agate Street in Eugene.? There was a really old guy, meaning
maybe 60 who had a green wagon, living almost immediately across the street. Remember it? sounded like a V8 engine.? I don't know what he did for a living, never talked to him, oddly enough.? I remember he towed a utility trailer around with it.
He'd be over 100 now, perhaps he's still living.? I walked by there not long ago.? The wagon is still there, and, most importantly, it is out of the rain.? Hasn't moved in decades.? So, if someone "needs" a wagon, here it is. Hiding under the carport-
Assuming it is a 1957 given the color, originally would have had the 226 six- the Continental, Willys, etc. engine.? I learned that Graymarine's six was a marinized 226 Continental.? And that Kermath's four cylinder marine engine was based on the
flathead 134 Willys, I remember one of these in a really neat double ended lapstrake boat.? My boss at the marina, working on it- "rather work on a busted down gas engine than a diesel anytime" he said.? There was one commercial fishing vessel in Florence
that had an actual Willys 4 cyl in it- it was "marinized" by having a radiator sitting in front of the engine; no salt water in the block that way.? May be the same boat, I remember a boat where you peeled back the sheet metal on the top of the fuel tank to
put gas in it.? Never exploded, open boat.? Wonder if the guy smoked while fueling up.??
I wish I had a picture of the "sanitary facilities" on the docks- there were wood outhouses, with a hole over the water, easier to clean that way.? As boys,? we noticed that the big perch hung out under there- but how do you make that stuff stay
on a hook?
Here in Eugene, it's soggy and cool.? Can't make myself clean up the garage in the cold, cold meaning in the 40's.? It will warm up soon, I'm sure, can get the dust off the wagon and take it for a spin.? I like to drive it to the coast, mostly on
back roads so I'm not a traffic impediment.?? It's a time machine for me.? Maybe tackle some minor issues with the wagon.? Though I have a boat project in queue ahead of it.
Hope other folks get some use out of the old beasts this summer.??

Re: "Willys" Stamped rear bumper center piece needed
I had the same on a 54' wagon 4x4, but had a 283 chevy motor. New parts had failed twice, so I went to a spicer conversion front and rear. Never got stuck again, This back in late 90's, don't know whats offered now.... -----Original Message-----

This is my first one of these trucks. I'm used to 226 and 230's. Also never had this type of ujoint before. The front has the strap style Cleveland but the rear has the U bolt style. I bought the Cleveland ones from Kaiser Willy's and they fit but use a clip not a strap. Will these also work on the rear drive shaft with the Ubolt attachment? Are the clips solid enough to not fly off while the front drive shaft spins? Should I make straps that will fit the caps as they stick out about an eighth of and inch?

Re: "Willys" Stamped rear bumper center piece needed
Hi Pavel. Here you see mine with a decal over the stamped printing. It was perfect shape, just needed rechroming --any bend appearance is bc lens distortion. Yes, I could add a new sticker, I could have it laser engraved --but as far as I am concerned the bumper was given to them in perfect shape. That's what I want back (I'm kind of a hard ass that way --right is right) and it's HIS responsibility to pay for the correction. I have to be accountable for things I do wrong --well so does he and if he won't I will sue on principle. Except the engine and mechanics I have painstakingly kept everything original --esp when it comes to the cosmetic. Every time I've bought aftermarket I've regretted it and either thrown the crap out or sold it brand new at a loss in fleabay. I've waited YEARS to have the extra money enough I felt I could afford to rechrome this bumper. That ahole is NOT going to ruin my party.? :) LOL. ? ? ? |
Re: "Willys" Stamped rear bumper center piece needed
Marc,
I searched for a really nice example of the Willys rear bumper for years. The only luck achieved was an OEM piece that was supposed to come from a Jeepster... it had no Willys imprint however and it didn't have the same curvature at the ends as the original on our wagon. If you look at the first picture you can see the difference. Why am I telling you this? I suspect there is quite a bit of variation in the production of these original bumpers - how do you know one you find will truly fit properly? The other pictures show the imprinted "Willys" on the original (heavily used/corroded) bumper of our wagon.. it fits better but you will notice the imprinting is really poor. Since it seems you have already gone to the trouble and expense of having your bumper rechromed, what about getting a Willys sticker from a sign shop and enhancing the look of what you already have? Another possibility of course is to get a reproduction and cut the Willys script into the surface using a laser engraver... and then having it chromed or painted. Cheers, Pavel up North. |
