Re: How long until EV conversions become commonplace?

I believe we are on a slow path to ‘universal batteries’. Once they realize that if they supply a decent battery, people will buy it. The same thing goes with a ‘low cost’ and ‘top of the line’ series battery as there will always be a market for the 3 levels. Ryobi makes a line of ‘One+’ ? cordless tools. I liked the idea when it first came out, and now own quite a variety of them. I don’t think we will see universal batteries until a standard voltage is set, and then I assume it will be for everything from garden tractors, snow shovels/blowers, leaf blowers, roomba’s for lawns & yards, back up for houses and RV’s etc. etc.

I am all for going electric, BUT, our current technology for acquiring the necessary materials for batteries is not that environmentally friendly.

That sounds like a very efficient set-up.?? What kind of machine is that??? I was interested in an electric garden tractor but the price was too high.

What probably would attract some people would be 50 lb battery packs that you could plug into various electric units (out board motor, small tractors/vehicles, even house emergency systems).? That way, a few battery packs could serve multiple purposes and not be tied to one machine or purpose.? I suppose Mallory and EverReady have already explored the idea ... all you need is agreement on a universal design, like AA or 9 volt existing batteries.? On the other hand, agreement on anything these days seems unlikely...

How long until EV conversions become commonplace?

As I've said before, electric conversions for various Willys models should make sense if systems are available as a "package" (with or without battery).? It seems to me that this is inevitable if enthusiasts have the up-front money to do the job. Nissan Leaf drivetrains and batteries are being adapted to the Morris Minor in the UK, EV West in California has come a long way with VW Beetle and Bus conversions in recent years.? And now GM apparently has seen 'the writing on the wall'... Chevy Bolt drivetrain and battery complete systems should be available within a year. When you consider that to rebuild a stock engine and transmission is becoming far more expensive than just a few years ago, when the time comes, I'd be interested in electrifying our Land Rover Discovery or Willys wagon.? Even our Suzuki Sidekick 4 door might be a candidate but it's probably not heavily built enough for the extra weight.? It all depends on cost of course.

Derek wasn't aware that WillysTech still existed until I sent a link to groups.io to the Classic Willys Mailing List. CWML is disappearing 15 December and I sent the link thinking they might want to try to save the list's information. Derek responded that he was going to put a link to WillysTech on the CJ3b page so you can probably contact through his page.

Well Marc,
Scout ll axles are not 10 spline, they are 30.? You could put the entire Scout ll rear end in by removing and rewelding the spring perches with the correct drive shaft angle, 5 degrees UP.? But those are usually 354:1 ratio.
I have to look, but I may have wagon axle shafts that are 19 spline.? I think a? 57 Dana 44 wagon would be 19 spline.? You can check the axle gears in the differential to see.? The 41 axles were much earlier weren’t they?? Those could possibly be 10 spline from the 40’s.? The front Dana 25 is 10 spline.?
I have a Scout ll complete rear axle, but shipping it is crazy.

Well Marc,
Scout ll axles are not 10 spline, they are 30.?

Re: Axle Shaft Search -- Nightmare in LA

If you can get a properly rebuilt axle , that will save a lot of fuss (and money?) ?Of course, you have to make sure the replacement is the same as your old one. ?Start by checking the differential ratios, back and front. ?Do not trust the tags (if they still exist and are legible). ?Jack up the vehicle carefully and put on stands or heavy wooden supports. ?Starting at the back axle, stop one wheel from turning. ?Count the number of times the drive shaft turns compared to one rotation of the free wheel***. ?This will give you an idea of the ratio of the Crown wheel/Ring gear and the pinion.. ?It should be a multiple of 4.88 or 5.34, but could be 4.27 or even 4.09. ?
What engine do you have in your wagon? ?If the engine is more powerful than stock, this might be a good time to change both axles to a lower ratio. ?There is a distinct danger of "Project Creep" here.

Best of luck to your pocket book!

Long email –sorry. :|
?
What alerted me to problems was there’s a big clank noise coupled with a kind of singlular physical jolt or thump that I felt shudder vibrate through the floor. It seemed to happen intermittently but in a couple months happened more often and louder. Sometimes more / less pronounced. But when it was pronounced it was very audible too. “CLANK!”
?
Seems to happen mostly only in 1st when forward or reversing. sometimes when I turned corners and going over bumps or dips.? Anyways.. replaced the rear leaf springs with brand new.... + all new attachment parts. Ah nope. No fixie.? Still made the noise.
?
My mechanic friend –old school guy been a mechanic all his life (along with another old school guy that I think specializes in rebuilding differentials) –diagnosed it to be the differentials.
?
That’s where I’m at.? Nothing is apart yet that I know of.. but I bought all the stuff to replace it through Kaisers. Hoping I could save time sitting at the mechanics taking up valuable time / space and ordering parts then .... waiting for the to ship.
?
Now I‘m understanding that not all parts need replacement and it’s spending $$$ where I don’t need too.
?
Had a incredibly kind offer from a guy off this list for differentials that were already rebuilt –those were for a 53.
?
Clearly that would be the best way to go IF they’ll fit a 57....!?
?
So If so.. I’ll return the Kaiser parts and buy these.?

Are the rear ends making noise?? Howling type noise that increases with speed.
Is there a huge amount of rotational slack that could be attributed to the diffs?? These types of things would indicate you might want to remove the diff cover and see what is going on.
Howling usually means a bearing has gone bad.
Some users drove their willys through rivers and the diffs got water and the grease was never changed= howling .
