Your Weather Station Info
5
One of the key criteria for reporting changing surface conditions is to have reliable reports, measured from weather stations. If you have access to a personal weather station or instrumentation and you are in the Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina path of the present storms, please list them here in a return email to the group so that we can give our net control ops and liaisons to the HNC an idea of what to expect. I will create a database with the info you provide. We will later ask for the rest of you to submit information to have a comprehensive base to draw from. Please list your: 1. Location 2. Weather station or measuring capabilities (anemometer, barometer, temp, etc...) 3. Repeater, Linked or Personal Node 4. Name and Call 5. And if you are a liaison to local NWS offices or Emergency Management Agencies. Thanks, Danny KD4RAA kd4raa@...

Hurricane reporting form.
Noticed my local time zone is not on the form. I'm using EDT as the "local time", as that's the local time at both the NHC and where the affected area is. Just a small point of interest. Almost 5AM EDT, been almost no activity so far. 73 de VK3JED http://vkradio.com

Update 6AM EDT
3
Net has been quiet so far. Looking on radar, Charley is dropping heavy rain over the Key West area. Areas further north don't seem to be too badly affected yet. Reports of a couple of Echolink nodes in FL offline - no word as to why yet. The storm is rapidly changing direction as expected, now headed almost due north going by the radar loops. > 73 de VK3JED http://vkradio.com

Pulsing node 4156
8
Node 4156 has been pulsing on the IRLP side all morning (I'm monitoring the reflector keyups). At times, this almost caused the whole net to go to pot, if it wasn't for quick thinking Echolink node owners who quickly put their systems into listen only mode. Unfortunately, node 4156 looks as though it will have coverage into affected areas later today, so blocking it is not the best solution. Also seems to be a couple of double kerchunks from the IRLP side from time to time. 4156 is involved each time, probably following up a button pusher or someone sending DTMF on another node. Echolink has been the better behaved network so far, due mainly to diligent node owners who are actively monitoring their systems if they're not up to spec. Just a few observations from net control. At the hours I'm operating (i.e. wee small hours EDT :) ), it would be handy to be able to take action to stabilise the network if things get out of hand. 73 de VK3JED http://vkradio.com

VoIP Hurricane Net open 4AM tomorrow
10
I will be opening the VoIP Hurricane Net for tomorrow at 4AM EDT (0800 UTC). It is likely I will be monitoring for some time before then as well, before officially taking up net control. Let's hope there's not too much damage from Charley. I've been seeing reports on Echolink of Cuban stations exchanging reports in Spanish with other parties on 7.110 MHz 73 de VK3JED http://vkradio.com

IRLP Node 4183
5
I am trying to connect to 9210 reflector to listen in to the net but I get a response from the system that the reflector is not accepting connections from my node. Is this the result of a deliberate exclusion of this node or due to node saturation? I understand that I can listen via EchoLink or other sources, but that doesn’t help out while mobile or otherwise away from a computer. Thanks. -Chris <>< KC4F

IRLP node 9216 Listen Only
We have established a Listen Only channel for IRLP nodes wishing to connect to monitor the Hurricane net traffic. You can connect to 9216 for this special listen only channel. This will allow the two-way traffic to take place on the main channel - 9210 for stations only in the affected area. It also minimizes the momentary pulsing on the Ref when you connect and disconnect. Danny KD4RAA Tony VK3JED

Saturday Morning net controls?
Do we know who's next in line for NC and what time they're starting? FYI, net has been operating all night. I'm running NC since 5AM EDT until the next NC takes over. 73 de VK3JED http://vkradio.com

What does it take to run net control from half a world away?
Hi all, Just as a point of interest, I've uploaded a photo of my shack as configured for net control ops on Friday 13th August for Hurricane Charley. A little explanation follows, but first, you will need to load the photo, which can be found in the photo area of the group. Shouldn't be too hard to find. :-) Starting from the left is the radio gear, including the EchoIRLP repeater. The mixer you can see mixes the audio from the system's 2 receivers and feeds it to the IRLP machine. The PC next to the radios is the main workstation, which runs Linux (and I'm typing this on it). If you'll look closely, you will see the NHC report form open on it! :-) To the right of the main workstation is the audio amp (turned off for emergency ops) and the wireless LAN access point, though on the angle the photo was taken, these are hidden by the PC. In front is a clock which is set to UTC. Down below is the EchoIRLP node/firewall machine and the cable modem. The laptop to the right of the operator's chair is used for Echolink voice/text access. And before you ask, I have only 1 IP address, but the two Echolink systems are made possible by routing the feed for the laptop across a VPN to a secured proxy and then out from there. Anyway, just a little insight into net control from down here. 73 de VK3JED http://vkradio.com

Anyone know who runs *FLORIDA* or VE3ECZ-R?
Anyone able to help with the above query? All night, we've had the VE3ECZ-R system feeding automated announcements every 15 minutes into the network. To make matters worse, the level is extremely high, which makes it especially disruptive. Because VE3ECZ-R is connected to *FLORIDA*, we have been reluctant to mute it, in case someone comes up with a damage report. However, in the very quiet period between 4 and 6AM EDT, we did mute it for an extended period. Since 6AM, I have been selectively muting it every 15 minutes to block the automated announcements. Other than this persistent problem and the odd stuck mic/dodgy VOX, things have been smooth. No problems reported on the IRLP side at all. Still wondering who the next NC is. :) I'm about to have dinner, but it's quiet enough to just stay within earshot for the time being. 73 de VK3JED http://vkradio.com

Call for SC/NC node connects
4
As the Charlie approaches the Carolinas, we would appreciate node connects from links in South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia today. --------- Reporting Stations should connect directly to : WX-Talk Conference on Echolink Raleigh Reflector 9210 on IRLP ---------------------- Stations outside the affected area can connect to one of the "listen only" channels: Raleigh Reflector 9216 on IRLP EDU_NET , K5JD, N2LEN The streaming audio feed is linked at www.voipwx.net ---------- KD4RAA

Conferencing
11
Today a Repeater connected to my Repeater from the effected area. And was Told by the NC the Basics of what was going on. He then was told the same thing by another Ham. The man disconnected his Repeater from my Conference server Repeater. No reason to give double instructions , You needed that Repeater for Reports. Now you may never see this Repeater in your conference server to offer you reports. NC control is NC, We don't need two give the same information twice to the same person. Also if your not wanting or have a need for Conferencing from Repeaters or links . It should be posted on How were are expected to bring our Repeaters and links into the WX-Talk server. 73 KF4VGX
