Another movie filmed in and near Tucson?? "TOMBSTONE" !!!? The shootout at the beginning, in Mexico, was filmed at the "Old Tucson" we all know and love.? But, the'res ANOTHER "Old Tucson" that's not open to the public.? It's east on I-10, off Mescal Road.? That was what they used for Tombstone itself.? You can see this "Old Tucson" when driving to trailheads on the back side of the Rincon Mountains.? Who knows HOW many other movies were filmed here?
?
I remember my parents watching a Kenny Rogers movie, based on his song "The Gambler."? They said that every single train station looked like Old Tucson.? Even if they were somewhere like Oregaon.? LOL, well, it WAS made for TV.
?
Now, going one step even LOWER, to rock videos, I remember that they were soliciting young women to dress up as "Saloon ladies" for one filmed at?"Old Tucson."? ?(I think by early 80's hair-metal band Ratt).
?
I detested hair-metal so I passed, LOL.
?
But, one step higher on the rock video list, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers filmed "Learning to Fly" at the boneyard at DMAFB.? You could see Rincon Peak very clearly in the background.
?
Peace, Helen

Delicious ideas to please the pickiest eaters.

I remember the playing of albums. That's how I became aware of the first Black Sabbath
album without Ozzy Osbourne. They also used to play the song "Precious" by the
Pretenders in which the phrase F*** Off is sung very clearly. And of course there was Bob
Cooke and the tragic end he came to. Does anyone remember which club it happened at?

I remember the KUAT DJs regularly being unaware that a record was stuck skipping at
the same place. Quite often they would forget to turn off the microphone. We'd be treated
to hearing their coversations as the selection was playing. I remember one pretentious DJ
who would pronounce every composer's name as if it were French.

Re: Rodeo Parade Pics

Steve Q.

Hi,

I marched in the parade 5 times - 4 times with the Rincon High band
and once with the Musicland Band in the mid '70s because I took
trumpet lessons there. There was a photo of the Musicland band in the
paper that year because we were the last entry and the street sweepers
were follwing close behind. I seem to recall that they played up the
humorous angle of that. But what could be more amusing than watching a
bunch of kids jumping over and around piles of horse poop and huge
puddles of horse pee while attempting to play "It's Rodeo Time In Old
Tucson" and stay in formation?

I'd like to know how the parade route has changed over the years. The
photos I posted show the parade going east on Congress as far west as
Church Ave. I remember the parade being staged south of Broadway, it
would go north on south 6th ave then I think it turned west on
Congress then turned right on Scott then right on Pennington,
something like that. If anyone knows for sure please post the route.

I liked the old route through downtown. I was bummed out when I heard
they had relocated it near the Rodeo Grounds. Not exactly the most
charming part of town.

I lived on s. 5th ave. & 15th st. for a few years. That was part of
the staging area so the streets were full of horses, wagons, etc. I'd
walk over to Armory Park to watch the parade.

I miss having the parade downtown! Seemed to lose some "class" and
local importance when they relocated it down south! I got to be in it
back in elementary school... it was such a big deal back then. That
time I marched with my youth group and it was still downtown! Then I
got to be in it again around 1995 when I worked for Target stores
after it moved to the Rodeo grounds area.

My question is why does it seem that every year it rains or is really
cold?!?!?!

Another question is why do they schedule that the same days as the
Accenture match play? I mean, I guess it attracts a different crowd,
but we go for months without any big events, then February is packed!
Kind of like the super bowl and fedex golf tourney in Phoenix the same
weekend I guess! When it rains it pours!

Bit of trivia, the land to the south of Nick's Flicks was owned by Dennis DeConcinni. Nick tried to buy it for parking but DeConcinni wouldn't sell it to him at any price. After Nick's closed, it eventually burned down and was razed. It's still just and empty lot.

The Cine Plaza was the first adult theater to show 35mm films. Deep Throat, Devil in Miss Jones, and Behind the Green Door showed there. It was the kind of theater where there were as many ladies as guys in the audience! ;-)

Also on Grant near Country Club was a theater called Wee Flicks that showed stuff similar to Nick's Flicks.

There was also a Pandora's Box on Campbell North of Grant as I recall.

at
a strip bar that used to be on 29th & Craycroft.

"Revenge of The Nerds" also used the Tucson High campus as well as
the
U of A. I remember the burned out frat house they constructed next

the frat house they used in the film which I think is on Speedway.
This is the jock's frat house, not the nerd's house.

One of my favorite Old Tucson movies is "Rio Bravo". Two others I
remember seeing as first releases: "Posse" and "Hawmps". Perhaps
obvious, yet still legit. ;)

And of course "Arizona", the film Old Tucson was constructed for.

Rodeo Parade Pics

Hi,

I just wanted to let veryone know that I started a new ablum for Rodeo
Parade pics located here:

Please add to it if you wish.

I've uploaded some photos of the parade heading east on Congress at
Church circa 1930s-'40s.

Re: El Conquistador

Steve Q.

As I remember they showed the "soft core" at the Cineworld. I've
posted some ads for various theaters including one for the Cineworld
in the movie theaters album here:

Besides the Empress there was also the Sensuous Cinema at 3656 E.
Speedway, the Showcase also showed adult films. Nik's Flicks & Chicks
was at 4567 S. 6th Ave. I recently found out that one of my cousins
managed that place for a while. The Cine Plaza at 318 E. Congress used
to also show adult movies. I think the Loft did too and that's the
reason they changed their name to the New Loft.

There was a place on Congress west of the Cine Plaza and east of Stone
that used to show blue movies. It was tiny but had a regular screen,
theaters seats and a ticket booth.

There also used to be the Follies Burlesque that had movies between
the stripper shows. It was and old fashioned place, just like a
regular theater. The strippers would get up on stage in front of the
screen to do their shows. They used an old portable hi fi, the girls
would do 3 songs and would have to go over and change records or move
the needle to another song. This place was on Speedway & Main. Ugly
cinderblock building painted yellow with red lettering all over
it.southeast corner.

The MacArthur Hotel was notorious as a gay hangout. There was a gay
bar there and guys would rent rooms in the hotel. There was a peepshow
across the street from the MacArthur with big plate glass painted
opaque red. You would see the guys hanging out in the parking lot. In
the mid '70s my brother rented an old storefront in the MacArthur for
use as a studio. He would get propositioned all the time. I remember
being there in his studio and exploring in a back storage area where
they had a bunch of old soda machines. I still have some of the cork
backed bottle caps I collected from them. The MacArthur was pretty
rundown in those days, really gritty which I thought was cool even at
the age of 9.

This was a motorcycle gang movie with a lot of shots of 22nd Street

Hi,

In a previous post I said that the frat house was on Speedway, but I realize that you're right about it being on University. I haven't lived in Tucson for 21 years so my directions get a little mixed up, but I know it was on an east-west street. They built the set for the burned out frat house scene right next to it.
