1991 Warrior - What is this thing in the taillight wiring?
Anybody have any idea what this thing is?
It's the thing marked "??" in about the center of the picture.? It's located on the house underside between the grey and black tanks, about 2 feet forward of the rear bumper.? Out one side is the taillight wiring and the other side goes forward (somewhere). Still working on troubleshooting my clearance light problem... tail lights and front and rear marker lights all work as does the trailer light connector... I know this, because while metering the trailer light connector I shorted it out and blew the fuse (lucky I have plenty of spare fuses). Rick in NH |

Looks to me like a connector; the kind you would use to connect 2 wiring looms. Maybe the maker had several different sub-looms for different setups. On Sat, Jun 29, 2024 at 12:34?PM Jogues via <jallairej=[email protected]> wrote:

Good afternoon, Jogues and Andymon.?
I'm thinking probably not a fuse.? I'm pretty sure that cable is strictly for lighting and there are fuses up front that protect that. Andymon's suggestion that it is some kind of connector makes more sense for the reason he suggests. I haven't tried opening or disconnecting that.? I'm too old, big, and arthritic to accomplish very much by crawling around under there without raising up the rear end somehow.? It sits too low to the ground for me to get around under there on a creeper.? Anyway I don't dare mess with it too much without some evidence that it's part of my clearance light problem... really hard to imagine they brought a separate wire all the way back to that connector (if that's what it is) for just the clearance lights. Its a connector, this would be a bad place for a fuse.? It is a toyota connector.? Probably a standard chassis component.? I'm guessing a tail light or signal fuse.? Only one way to know.? Turn all lights and the emergency signal on, disconnect the connector and look for failure. Or run both a?+ and - wire from a battery?(with a low amp inline fuse in the + wire), disconnect the connector and attach the leads to the aft end of the connector. Something should light up. Thanks, Doug.? It's definitely related to the tail lights.? The trailer lights tap in just aft of that connector (and I agree that it's almost certainly a connector) and they all work, as do the taillights, reverse light, brake lights, and turn signals.
I've pretty much ruled it out as a source of my clearance light problem unless they brought the wiring for the clearance lights all the way back to that connector which wouldn't make any sense at all.?? I'm quite certain that connector hasn't been unplugged in 34 years so I'm not touching it witihout some clear evidence that it's part of the problem.? I'm not that brave.? :-O Rick in NH |
Hi, I would comment the blue clips on the wires near the ??? are likely to get corroded and cause interruptions. I always solder wires. I have heard some who say soldering isn't a guarantee. This is BS. The only place a well soldered joint will fail is if temps reach the melting point of solder or strain from vibration. Not at all likely in road vehicles. Pete |
