Nate, I do not have an owners manual (worse luck), but I measured
the outside of my tanks and came up with the following: fresh water tank
at
20 gal, grey water at 12 gal, and black at 19 gal. Sounds pretty close to
what you have.

I was also advised to wait until the Black water holding tank was
almost full before draining it.

I got my Sunrader out of storage this week and gave it a good
cleaning. We are leaving Tuesday for a few days at the Colorado
River. The weather forcast does not look too good, possible rain,
but you never know for sure. Anyway I am anxious to hit the road,
even if it does rain.

Here is a site you might want to check out for holding tanks and many
other RV parts also, they carry a large
selection of stuff and some of the harder to find parts too. Seems
everyone has there own prefered method of holding tank use, but on
the black tank I let it get near full then empty it out all at once
to help flush out the tank, by hooking up to campground sewer and
opening the black tank valve the liquid flows out and the solids pile
up making it harder to flush out, by letting it fill up the liquids
help break down the solids and the extra liquid will flush things out
better. Good luck in your tank repair venture.

Jack, we are like family here so I can disagree with you and
still be friends, I hope. Your Toyota camper must be a lot
smaller than my 21' Sunrader. I can go 4 or 5 days with the
water I carry in my tank, and the holding tanks last me a
week or more. I think the whole purpose of having a motorhome
is to use the toilet, shower, sink, furnace, water heater, etc.
and enjoy the luxury that we paid for. If I could not use the
holding tanks I would not want a camper. I am with Dick on
repairing these items so they can be used.

Yup. everything is ok as far as the rest. I think the org. owner had a bit
of a crash and took the insurance money and ran, that is the best we can
figure. Thus, the ol boy wanted to sell the unit in the winter, arr and
winter is when I bought her, however even with 1k into the deal I am still
well within what Its worth to me, however, now we all know what it will cost
to have a custom job done.

Dick.

I agree with Benton. Check out JC Whitny. They sell
the same RV toilets for $89.

I sounds like your plumbing froze in the winter. Is
the toilet and tank cracked and leaking? What about
the pump, fresh water tank, hot water heater, and the
rest of the plumbing? All OK?

Dick.

I've been camping ever since I was a kid (Many years).

My wife and I have owned many Rv's. From tents, VW micros
in the 60s-70s, to travel trailers and MH's. Here it what
we found:

The key to fun is to keep your rig simple.

Nether the fresh water holding tank or the black water
tank will hold enough to work on any stay in the
boondocks over two days. If you plan to only use sites
where you can have full hook up, you don't need the tanks.

Taking one, or two quick showers will fill the gray
water tank, and you will have to move the rig to find a
find a dump site.

We don't use the tanks, except the valved gray water tank.
We carry our water in separate containers so there no need
to move the rig to refill the too small water tank. And of
course we don't have to deal with that nasty Black water
problem ever, as we carry bikes and use the CG facilities.

So think about taking a trip or two before you invest in tanks.
you may find you don't want the hassle.

Dick.

The National Weather Sevice broadcasts on 7 channels
and can be heard all over the country. They carry fore-
casts and weather info of high value to travelers.
You will hear severe weather warnings and storm info
for the road ahead.

Most good, modern CB radios have these channels built
in, and they use the CB's antenna. You only have to flip
the dial to hear them. The older sets had only 3 channels
and will work, but not as well. Hold out for the 7 channel
weather feature. All CB radios will also have 40 CB
channels. $80 is a fair price if the set has the 7
weather channels...Ask.

I'm in the radio communications business. I design and
manufacture base com antennas. I've used all sorts of radios in
my vehicles including GMRS, Ham, and CB. I travel all over the
country, for my business. Here is what I have found works best
on the road.

CB is still the best choice for travel. Even more useful
than your cell phone. Channel #13 is the one used by most
RV'ers, according to the That said,
we heard no other RVs on the whole trip to Fla. But were
able to keep in touch between units quite well.

Don't buy a cheap radio, (Radio Shack comes to mind here).
Over all, Cobras seem to hold up the best and put out the
best signal. Around 4 watts on the later ones. Cheap Radios
do not hold up well in the extreme temp swings of a closed
truck. Expect a range of 2 to 3 mile between units. Less
when the band is noisy from skip. If you want more range
you will need an illegal amp, of at least 25 watts. Many
of the truckes use them. I don't.

Try to buy a radio with 7 weather channels. 3 channels
will work, but there may be times you won't hear (and that
will happen when you need it the most). By hearing what was
ahead of me I was able to duck into a rest stop and sleep
through some very bad storms on the way home.

Antennas need a ground. If your machine is glass, your
best bet is the metal mirror tube on the doors. Or drill
the hole in the fender and mount directly to the cab body.
If your unit is metal ("Spam Can") you can mount anywhere.
Drilling holes in these old units is OK, as even if you
sell it, the next owner will need an antenna too. Do a
nice clean job, and remember, longer is better, as far as
CB antennas go. Glass/window "stick Um on's " work
poorly at CB frequencies (27 Mh). Tuning the antenna for
best match is fine, if you have the equipment. If not don't
worry about it. Most will work, right out of the box.

The worst part about CB radios is finding a place to make
a mount in the small cab of our Toyotas. That's another
reason to buy a good radio first time, as you only want
to put it in, once.

Jack.

You know George I have the same problem with my 87, so let me know what kind

thanks - the old vacuum cleaner tube test tells me its coming from the
internal upper end around the pistons - not timing chain. Anyway, does
not
seem to hurt performance etc.

I'll try the look at the linkage on the heater - inside/outside air makes
little differance. Actually there is a little flow, kind of like a
terminal
TB case so I'm tearing into the blower to look for more debris after the
ice
is gone here in Arkansas.

If you hear anymore on available axle kits let me know

Hi George,
The ringing noise has me puzzled but I will take a shot at it
anyway, Piston slap comes from the cylinders having too much
clearance and the piston is rocking back and forth in the cylinder
until it warms up and they expand and get tighter, it makes a
knocking sound, the timing chain will make a clattering noise when
cold, carbon buildup won't cause piston slap but could cause
detonation or pinging but not at start up. Without hearing it my
guess would be more on the lines of a heat shield or exhaust shroud
vibrating until it warms up and expands. As far as the blower problem
the only 2 things that come to mind are either the inside/outside air
knob on the heater control is set to inside or recirculate or the
diverter cable from the heater control to the air flap has came loose
under the dash and not redirecting the air to the vents. Good luck

You know Jack, I just need to spend the money to get one of those books,
thank you ever so much. Now I will be taking our unit[yet unused on the
road by us] to Toyota next for a tune up. Also, there seems to be a bit of
oil on the outside of the differential on the back axel. My brother says I
should have the pinion[sp] seal replaced, because it is leaking and the rear
end will always be a bit low on grease. Could this be something I have
Toyota do for me. Usually the seals are a buck-forty and the job will cost
four-hundred, however, I don't want to blow a rear end on our first outing
of the summer. What do you think guys? And should I have Toyota change the
plugs and put in a oxy sensor deal as well?

Hey Dick, I checked my Chilton's about an unusual warning light.
It said that there is a light set to go on every 30,000 miles
as a message to change your oxygen sensor. To reset the light
you must remove the counter (found under the left side of the
instrument panel), lift the cover off and push the reset switch.

Also, it described a warning light to tell you to check out the
components of the air injection system. This requires a device
called 'diagnostic emission control system checker' at the
Toyota dealer.

Most people just remove the bulb in the light or put a piece of
tape over the curssed thing.
