Extra QEX copy 4
Does anyone want a copy of the January/February 2025 issue of QEX? The ARRL sent me two copies. It has the tinySA tracking generator design article in it. Of so *respond to me privately* at kc0wjn at gmail dot com Responses to the list will be ignored. The magazine is free; shipping cost from 32754 USA to be paid to me by PayPal F&F (the shipping cost using USPS Media Mail is probably trivial). DaveD KC0WJN

Issues with TinySA USB Connection in C# 24
Hi, I'm writing a C# program to receive data from TinySA and analyze it. I need to retrieve data from these three commands every second: frequencies data 1 data 2 The issue is that, from time to time, TinySA does not return data over USB. After this happens, it stops responding to any commands I send over USB. I suspect this might be because I need to set the correct parameters during the connection process with TinySA over USB. Unfortunately, I couldn¡¯t find the required parameters in the documentation to properly connect to TinySA using USB. Could you please let me know the correct way to establish a USB connection with TinySA? I've tried several methods, and the following setup has been the most stable so far: PortName = "COM3"; BaudRate = 115200; new SerialPortStream(portName, baudRate) { Parity = Parity.None, StopBits = StopBits. One, DataBits = 8, WriteTimeout = 500, ReadTimeout = 5000, Handshake = Handshake.DtrRts }; await serialPortStream.WriteAsync(commandBytes, 0, commandBytes.Length); Thanks in advance!

TinySA Ultra becomes unresponsive when touching the screen or using the toggle button to bring up the menu
Whilst using the TinySA Ultra to take signal measurements yesterday, the device became unresponsive. I have power cycled the device and we have updated the firmware, with no improvement. The device starts and launches the FFT screen with the attenuation and frequency marker which can be moved with the toggle. However, the amplitude is not shown on the grid. If the toggle is pressed, the menu opens and the device becomes unresponsive. If the screen is touched, the device becomes unresponsive. Has anyone had any experience with this?

Touch screen not working after update 12
I just did a firmware update same way I have done it many times in the past. Powered the SA Ultra off and back on and screen flashed several times and now the touch screen is not working, cannot get a menu and no scan trace on the screen, Just the grid and all the information/items showing on the left side of the display. Any suggestions would be appreciated, did a search for this issue but did not see a solution. Already removed the back and disconnected the battery and did a factory reset with the jog wheel and power on button.

How to get a quick EMV approval with tinySA Ultra? 29
Hello. I bought my tinySA ULTRA in 2023 to do self-certifications of developed hardware and/or to find out if my hardware will meet requirements for approval. Though, I did not have any success yet. The ULTRA is calibrated and tested, but I have no idea on how to use it for this purpose in best way. Is a video tutorial available, showing the usual way/process of doing that? I am working to 100% on Linux (have a Linux workstation running openSUSE 15.5 x64). It would be great if a program is available, generating a report with needed details by controlling the tinySA ULTRA over USB and finally generating a printable report for archiving. It would be great if somebody can help. Thanks in advance!

Spectrum Analyzer / RF 101 and consultants 5
I apologize in advance if this is a dumb question but I need guidance. I have a Tinysa spectrum analyzer but I am completely new to radio frequencies and the spectrum world but NEED to learn as soon as possible. All the book search results I have found so far seem advanced because I am not even familiar with the terminology. Can anyone tell me where to start? I am not a techie. Any beginner¡¯s resource for dummies will help. Also, are there people/consultants out there who you can pay to advise you on how to set your spectrum analyzer based on what you are trying to capture and who will interpret the results for you? If so, what are they called (so I can search the web), and/or where can I find a reputableone? Thank you very much.

Which to believe 5
I have an Elecraft XG3 signal source that I use for troubleshooting radios. It outputs a square wave full of harmonics that can be set for -107dBm,-73dBm, or -33dBm. I have attached some screenshots from my Oscilliscope and the tinySA. When I was using the tinySA with the windows app the app measurement did not agree with what I see on the screen. So basically none of my readings agree. The scope measurements kind of bother me because they are pretty far off. This is not a lab quality scope (Hantek DS02D15) but I did not think it would be this far off. Just wanting some input on how to resolve these differences. thanks.

How to find this signal with all its harmonics 11
Hi, I am am since a year a radio amateur, and i am learing moren and more but also finding interference issues here and i want to find them and if possible eliminate them. For this i ordered the TinySA as tool. I am suffering of a disturbance signal over the 2m and 70 cm band, it seems it is extreem strong and has a lot of harmonics toe. The idea is to make analyses during lets say an hour and find out of the interference is time driven or nog, and how wide this interferance is over the bands. On my SDR i can only see a part of it. Attached some of the sreenshots i made, and if someone recognise it, please tell me what it could be, it is day and night... An approach, or point out documents and or youtube recordings that could help me are welcome. in the filename is de date and time, it seems the issue is every 10 minutes but i am not 100% sure, this is also something i would like to learn if i could make a recording of the spectrum and that way find the spikes in time. Thanks for your suggestions Eelco de PD1EG

TinySA 3.5mm jack 7
I don't want to force a standard 3.5mm 3 conductor jack all the way into my TinySA Ultra and take a change of breaking it. Has anyone tried using a two conductor jack and, if so, did it make the channel connections despite not being fully seated? Thanks,

TinySA Ultra Interval trigger still not working 2
Hi Erik, Back in 2023 I reported that the Interval trigger feature you implemented for me on the TinySA was not working properly on the TinySA Ultra. Today I upgraded the firmware on my TinySA Ultra to tinySA4_v1.4-196-g1e9c187.bin and I tested the Interval trigger feature again and it's still not working properly. My test is to feed in a 60 or 120 Hz square wave (which is rich in harmonics) into the TinySA Ultra, set the TinySA Ultra to Zero Span mode with a frequency of 1.8 MHz, set the display sweep time to 20 msec, select interval trigger with a time of 16.66 msec and I should see spikes that are stationary (very little movement left or right) but I do not get stationary spikes on the TinySA Ultra whereas I do on the TinySA when doing this same test. Sure would be nice to get this feature working properly on the TinySA Ultra as the TinySA Ultra has the built in LNA as well as expanded frequency coverage. I'm sure your buried with the new TinySA Ultra Plus (congrats) but please put this on your to do list if possible. Thanks, Don (wd8dsb)

A feature request: Zooming with two fingers 2
My Android smart phone has that feature. You can zoom/enlarge the screen image by spreading two fingers on the screen. Is this possible with TinySA in the future?

TinySa as RF generator 2
Indeed, in the CONFIG/EXPERT CONFIG/FREQ CORR menu you can make a correction of the output frequency when Tinysa Ultra is configured in generator mode. The value to be entered must be negative if you want to increase the frequency and positive if you want to decrease the frequency. But the value to be entered does not correspond to the difference of the frequency entered in the Tinysa with respect to that of the precision frequency meter, at least that is what I have found. You have to try the correction value to reach a compromise point. Nor is this value the same for frequencies of, for example, 100-500-800 MHz or 1-2-3 GHz. In addition, you always have to wait a while until the RF output stabilizes. I don't know if it is due to the precision of the internal TCXO or some other factor. I mention this data in case it can be used for some kind of improvement in a large project like TinySa ultra, which is already being asked for too much in terms of its cost, and which cannot be compared with much more expensive and sophisticated laboratory equipment. Thank you and best regards.

Can the Tinysa Ultra's RF output be calibrated in generator mode? 3
Hello. First of all, congratulations on a great job with the Tinysa ultra. I have the ZS405 version with firmware 1.4-192 and I would like to discuss a topic with you. The frequency accuracy in RF generator mode. I have checked the output at different frequencies and there are errors which are the following: 1MHz +6.5Hz; 10MHz +3.8Hz; 50MHz -8Hz; 100MHz -23Hz; 200MHz -51.4Hz; 300MHz -81Hz; 500MHz -142Hz; 800MHz -242Hz; 1GHz -350Hz; 2GHz -611Hz; 3GHz -900Hz I cannot check beyond 3GHz because the Tinysa ultra does not have enough dBm output for my GPS-referenced frequency counter and the preamplifier I have only reaches up to 3GHz.

tiny sa ultra zs407 6
Hello. I am a radio amateur. Mostly I build and repair my own transverters. The tiny sa ultra is just fine for servicing my gear right up to 6 cm (5760 MHZ). I also need to work on my transverter 3 cm ( 10368 MHZ). The comparison table for different models of tiny sa ultra show for zs406 and 407 that one can use some kind of harmonic mode.It would be wonderful for 3cm But how do you do that?Sweeping in harmonic mode...So I need information...how and where.. . I would even buy a second tiny sa ultra and this time the newest ultra plus zs407 , but I first have to know about my possibilities on 3cm.Thank you for any help. ?

TinySA Ultra (405) - maximum detectable GHz? 3 #ultra
I'm working on resurrecting a Wiltron 6600 series sweeper (10 MHz - 18 GHz) with multiple problems (I think it was a combination of salvage parts). My old systron donner 762-2A spectrum analzyer (and a 436/8484 power meter) have been helping, but it occurred to me that the TinySA Ultra might help (as in detecting presence of a signal) as well, and perhaps aid in validating the sweeper's output (through appropriate attenuators; the YIGs can kick out +15..+20 dBm.) I'm curious as to how the original ("405"?) version Ultra can be expected to behave when encountering a (single) signal (a sort-of stable carrier from a fundamental-mode YIG oscillator) far above the ~5 GHz Ultra-mode ceiling? I suspect this has been covered (either by developer, by experimenter, or both) but my searches in the group archives didn't yield anything that might apply. Thanks!

TinySA ULTRA vers TinySA ULTRA+ - FW issue in release -193- & -196- but not -175- 11
Hi TinySA experts, I'm observed an issue comparing the Ultra+ (ZS-407, V0.5.4) vers the old ULTRA (HW V0.4.5.1.1). I purchased two devices of both HW Versions, so my tests were run on four devices. The ULTRA+ device shows independent of used FW Ver. -193- and -196- and independent of remote control or direct screen operation the attached spectrum (center 500MHz, span 10kHz, RBW 1kHz) After some experiments with different and older FW I figured out that the observed behavior is not HW related but only observed when using FW release -193- or -196- but is nor occurring in FW -175- The Input is terminated with 50Ohm. I attached some pictures to point out my observation. Thanks in advance for checking and solving teh observed issue in a new FW release. Markus PS.: Sorry The Forum-SW removed my '+' sign from the attached file names.

Scanning for unknown mobile phone 11
Hey folks, I've bought a TinySA a while ago for some other project, but something has cropped up that makes me wonder if it can help here. I'm not an RF professional, I know enough to know I don't know anything. A good friend is going through a breakup, and there's credible evedince their evicted ex has been spying on them. We did find a hidden smartphone running a baby monitor app already. Wifi/Network are changed, so any devices relying on that (e.g. ESP32-equipped power bars) are eliminated. However we have reason to suspect there's a cellphone hidden in or the vicinity of the bedroom. My current approach is to inspect the power outlets one by one to see if a power supply has been connected and the setup stowed away behind some paneling. I wonder if there's a way to use the TinySA to home in on such a device as well. I've done some limited resarch into it, and found e.g. videos of people using a HackRF to decode some cellular traffic between the base station and their smartphone. These were quite sophisticated, seemed to rely both on a lot of protocol knowledge (I don't have) and even prior information from the smartphone itself about used channels/modulations, that for obvious reasons also are unknown. I don't even know which kind of technology is being used. 3G, 4G are most likely, but these to my knowledge are umbrella-terms that cover a broad range of frequencies and modulations and other protocol details. So I'm just overwhelmed where to start. If somebody has some idea if the TinySA can be used to at least detect the presence if not precise location of a cell phone so we can be sure that we have to rip half the room apart, that would be splendid. I know it's a moonshot and if it is just not working that way, then I'll accept that as well. Thanks for your consideration, and I'll be back in the future with my actual purpose I bought the little bugger for. Cheers, Diez
