Far below expectations.

greetings

I recently bought the TinySA Ultra. It was important to me to have a device that was mobile and handy.

I chose this device, not least because of the fact that the TinySA Ultra can also be connected to the computer.

?

Well, as a standalone analyzer the device may certainly be convincing for the price, but when it comes to functionality, reliability and usability on the computer, I have to say the TinySA Ultra is a disappointment.

?

The connection breaks down, it sometimes responds to clicks in the menu and sometimes it doesn't.

To use the functions, you can't operate directly in the large main window with the good resolution. No, you have to go to the screenshot menu and try it there, but the resolution is terrible and the TinySA Ultra reacts unreliably to mouse clicks and always loses the connection again and you have to close the program completely, restart it and reconnect.

?

It can't be my hardware, it's good enough.

?

Is it just me or do others have these problems too?

?

Is there any other software that can be used to operate the TinySA Ultra on the computer?

?

You are free to buy a $$$$$ professional SA that suits you.

Thank you for your feedback,

NK

Hi.
I have the Tiny SA Ultra. It is no match for my Agilent, but it does tell me the same information. It isnt perfect or professional grade, but for the price,
it is more than acceptable.
I have the Tiny SA app v 1.1.20.1 running on widows 10 pro an have no issues. It works as describe in the guides.
I also have QtTiny SA v0.10.6, and likwise no problems at all. I rather like this app over the other, I have used all the features and functions
that I generally use, so far from everything.
Sorry to hear of your perspective.

Hello,
We can't do nothing? for the missing of skill....
Verry sorry for that.

I never had any of? these described misfunctionalities....?

Please investigateur elsewhere than TinySa Ultra itself...

Regards.

No problems here, but I suggest you check your connection. Good USB cable,
avoid hubs.

Hi pimpersivius...
I'll try to be polite.
What software are you trying to use?
What USB (2 or 3)?
As? most people use the TinySA very easily and efficiently on a PC I find that most problems are between the Keyboard and the skills of the operator.
Try another USB cable, another USB port? (and maybe (just very uncommon) your SA may be? faulty)
There, no cussing...

From?reading your post it seems it's the computer software that's letting you down NOT the hardware?? If so, the subject line sure is misleading - the subject line makes it sound as if it's the hardware.? Yet, later in your post you say the hardware is good.? Why not put "TinySA computer software" as the subject line as that seems to be the issue.

I'm looking for a Linux version of software for the TinySA to use - maybe I just need to look more.??

It seems you misunderstand this software.? ?The control via the snapshot is indeed rudimentary - it directly controls the screen of the nano, but is done via polling and is not meant for normal use.

To use the software as intended, first click the icon on the left with the four arrows, which copies the current nanovna settings to the software.? Then press the icon with the single arrow (play button) for a single sweep trace, or the one with circulating arrows for continuous traces.? This does not affect the screen of the nano itself, just the plots? configured on the software display.? Now you can change any of the control parameters on the left, and these changes will take effect next time you start the trace.? Also you can change the types of plots displayed and many plot parameters by right-clicking in the plot area.?

This is really very powerful and useful software. Experiment with it, and you will find many useful features.?

In contrast to you, I am extremely grateful that a spectrum analyzer (SA) as affordable and efficient as the TinySA Ultra exists. As for computer software, I can't comment as I don't use it. The TinySA Ultra already has a large screen and suits my needs perfectly. I hope you're not comparing the lowly TinySA to a high priced SA, as that wouldn't be a fair comparison.

You should be able to make it work with MatLab but there is no direct support.

Hey, guys and gals, let's get real, here!? The creators of both the TinySAs and NanoVNAs have given both amateurs and some professionals several highly capable instruments.? Sure, they don't fill the bill of those costing 100X (or more) the price, but that is not the market nor capability at which they are aimed.??

Personally, I have a number of SAs and several VNAs of professional grade (one of the advantages of once having worked for HP - the "pre-Carley" HP).? But most of the time, I find the inexpensive equipment which we are only recently given are more than adequate for my purposes.? THANK YOU, to those who made these available at a highly competitive price point!!? I do not believe we have any excuse what-so-ever to complain about their capabilities.? After all, how many of us could even dream of owning a good spectrum analyzer or vector network analyzer.? Likely none of us.? So, pick on the SW, not the HW.?

Long ago and far away while sitting in front of the HP 8566 and eventually teaching others how to use it, I wished? like crazy I could own one.? The price point was well beyond my means as it was for most engineers using it.? Well, now we have 95% of the capabilities of that instrument at our fingertips.? And......!!.......it's affordable.

Let's be thankful for what we are given at a very reasonable price.

I would agree, I think there has been a misunderstanding about what the software does and how it is to be used.

The TinySA, especially the Ultra version, is capable of near lab grade performance, and during my professional career I have carried kit weighing >30kg that didn't perform as well.

My rule of thumb, if your experience is different to the majority of other peoples, figure out what you are doing wrong.

Then, if you are still convinced something is wrong, try asking.

The first part usually saves embarrassment during the second part.

Martin

Totally agree, and the user interface is far better than an Anritsu ;-)

HP - HIGHEST PRICE as we called them.

Nice gear but stupid cost of repairs.

Pop the front end of one and that's $1000 just for an input FET.

Maybe that's why they've had several name changes just to get rid
of the highest price moniker ;-)

Yes, I never did find the **** who transmitted up the tracking generator on the one I used - only, ?1000 I wish!

I also have the Tiny SA app v 1.1.20.1 running on widows 10, with my Tiny SA. I have the same issues however and though disappointing, I fortunately do not require PC control.

With a little work and learning how to map Linux devices to COM ports I was able to get the current version for Windows to run under Wine on Ubuntu 22.04.

How about the waterfall? Does it work on your computer?

With me under W11 you can see practically nothing. The mode can be switched on and the display changes, but you can only see 3 pixels wide of the waterfall itself. So the function is practically useless.

Yes the waterfall doesn't work well neither does the BigNumber on the Ultra via the remote screen on W10.
This might be a bug in Ultra's FW as the tinySA basic works fine.
