Configuration/Troubleshooting Question
3
Good morning.
I've just completed the assemble and some initial testing of the
SoftRock40. The green led lights up and the Fixed HW Osc @
7.056MHz can be seen and heard. That's about all that works
since the SoftRock40 does not appear to be receiving any signals from
the antenna. There are two issues/questions follow:
ISSUE#1: Under "Configure & Use", step#4 is not clear.
It says " With the oscillator running, tune to the frequency that is as
much above 7.056 MHz as the test oscillator is set below 7.056 MHz."
I'm not sure what this means! Does this mean that an external signal
generator should be connected and tuned to (7.056MHz -n), while the SoftRock is
set to (7.056MHz +n)??? Please explain.
ISSUE#2: I'm not able to null any images under "images" as described
in step#4. (In fact I do not see an image, only the 7.056MHz test
signal.)
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I'm stuck.
Thanks & (((73))), Jim WA2UMP

Contest Sigs, Choppy Audio, But...
3
SR-40ers,
PA contest this morning provided lots of signals to check out. Also a RTTY
thing early this morning.
Had several things running like email and such and some strong signals
sounded rather choppy. I minimized the PowerSDR window to do something in
email and the signal cleared up -- no longer choppy.
OK if you just wanted to listen to the one signal but not too useful for
tuning around...[g]
Better to close all the other applications and open windows of course but
interesting anyway -- maybe.

Contest Sigs, Choppy Audio, [Better Now]
Bill,
I found it (Display Tab, Setup Book) and set it down from 15 to 6. That
made a big difference. I see a message from Cecil that suggests several
other options for reducing the CPU busy time. I'll mess around with things
and see what seems to work best for this laptop (.
Thanks! Still having fun with SR-40...

SR-40 on 30 meters -- FB
2
Bruce and All,
Just did the minor mods needed to change bands and all is working
FB. Signals are fair this time of day from about -135 to -100 dBm on some
sigs.
I didn't have 33pF caps for C6 and C7 so I used 39pF np0/c0g instead.
Will be looking to see what the panadapter looks like when there is a DX
pileup happening...[g]

It LIVES!
3
After 3 long days of waiting for my softrock to arrive, it finally
did! Now I won't be waiting at the mailbox to meet the mailman!
Took me much longer than 3 hours to build, but I made some errors
that had to be corrected:>:
For anyone about to go through this, I suggest the following:
Don't do like I did....and put the tanatlum caps in backwards! Even
with a lighted magnifying lamp, I didn't see the little X on the
component indicating the polarity. Had to remove 3 of them and
reinstall them, fortunately I caught this before I applied power.
Software install went without a problem. I'm a little concerned that
I didn't get prompted to install some other utility programs like the
directions said I would....but it fired up without errors on the first try.
The moment of truth came.......time to plug it in and look for smoke.
No smoke, but the LED is very dim....oooopppssss, must be a problem.
Turns out that's not a problem, they are all pretty dim,! The 2.2 K
series resistor limits the LED current to 1.3 ma. No doubt, this was
intentional due to the nature of the beast in that it draws power
from the USB port.
My Dell laptop has no stereo input on the sound card and my antenna
was a 6 foot clip lead laying on the bench. So, I haven't adjusted
the null for the opposite sideband yet.
Even with the bad antenna, I heard a few signals, enough to know it
works! Most of the signals I heard were noise coming from the
computer though, but I dido manage to hear some CW. My computer is
59, much louder than the few signals I was able to hear with the
limited antenna.
So, it looks real good so far.
At some point, my softrock will probably be installed in a box! So I
attached both cables to the same side of the PCB, leaving one
mounting hole available for the day when I want to install it in a
box (both cables anchored to the same mounting hole).
Took me awhile to figure out how to adjust the frequency on the
flexradio software.....but that was the hardest part of the software
aspect of the testing.
Fired it up with SDRadio, it works with SDRadio software too.
I have a problem with occasional (very brief) dropout of the audio
every 3 to 4 seconds for 100 msec's or so. It also pops when the
audio drops out. It does this whether the softrock is plugged in or
not though. Tried setting the soundcard to use mime instead of the
windoze driver, but had the same results.
I can make a recording of it (I think). Will probably have time to
work on it tonight after the house gets quiet.
So far so good.
Hope everyone's assembly goes as well as mine.
Regards,
Art

PC too slow for SR-40
If you have a PC that is a tad slow for the Powerflex software or
your running Windows 98 or ME, try the link below.
The latest version of the software is Ver .95
The software is not as advanced as the Powerflex software but it will
let you try out your SR-40 and see what all the raucous is about.
There is no CW mode, but you can receive it in SSB mode, the filters
are adjustable can be made quite narrow.
It has some nice features such as the fact that the Panoramic Display
can be 3KHz, 6KHz, 12KHz, 24KHz, or 48KHz, the noise filter works
quite well also, and it's very simple the setup.
Enjoy

SR-40 Tuning and Other Good Info
SR-40 Folks,
Something I should have done first rather than stumble around and ask a lot
of questions. There are two PDF files on the Flex Radio Systems download
page. These are quick start and complete SDR-1000 operating manuals.
http://www.flex-radio.com/
Some folks most likely did this first and were most helpful. But it did
make it easire to understand the manuals...[g]

SR-40 Frequency Calibration
SR-40 Folks,
Tony mentioned this to me. Hadn't seen it mentioined here on the lists so
I'm passing it along for Tony...[g]
Use W1AW as a signal source. Note any difference in frequency when you
zero beat the signal in the filter passband.
Then go to the Setup Book, SR-40 tab and adjust the frequency there
accordingly.
Tony sez you can get really close this way -- W1AW frequency at 47.5 is
pretty accurate.

SMT Parts Source and Experimenters Kits
Below is a link to a company that I bought from to build up my parts
stock. They have a lot of SMT parts kits for a reasonable price. They
also have project kits with lot's of extra parts so you can experiment
making changes.

No fiduciary interest, just though to pass on a source of SMT
parts.

Success with SR-40
4
I completed my SoftRock-40 just before leaving for the GQRP mini-convention
in Rotherham, and didn't have time to test it. I've just plugged it into my
PC (running the SDRadio software) and connected it up to my trusty Marconi
2019A signal generator and it seems to be working OK - I can hear a -106 dBm
signal at 7.040 MHz and can probably go lower. Has anyone else checked the
sensitivity? I'll try it out with an antenna later.
I've promised George, G3RJV, a write-up for Sprat. I met someone at Rochdale
who is building one, and someone else who wanted one but missed out.

Software Problem
2
When I click on the Power SDR icon on the Desktop, the SDR dialog box
comes up and it has "Softrock 40 Edition". The loading bar moves from
left to right. At about the halfway point of loading, another dialog box
comes over the top of the SDR dialog box "unhandled exception". The
loading stops. I have tried deleting the SDR programs and .NET
Framework, and downloading again, and reinstalling them. No change -
still "unhandled exception". Computer is 3.2 Ghz with 1Gb memory
running win XP Home Edition. Any suggestions? My SoftRock-40 card is
working on the bench.

SoftRock40 Rocks!
2
Hi All,
Completed my SoftRock40 this afternoon. Took about 3 hours. I'm using
the external power mod (78L05 in place of 2N3904, etc.).Current drain on
a 9V battery is 29+ mA. My PC is a 1GHz Dell Optiplex GX200 with sound
on the motherboard.
Signals came through upon first powerup. I don't have an XG-1 to
perform the image null. (Will borrow one tomorrow). I was able to make
a null adjustment while listening to a fairly strong CW signal. Both
gain and phase are very close to the middle of the range for a fairly
good null. I don't expect much change when I use the XG-1 tomorrow.
On to some on-air listening--

It's Alive! Hot receiver
2
Had to jump in and say my SoftRock40 is working super too. What a hot
receiver! Finished the kit Sunday night, found the bad solder joint
after coming home from work this Monday night. Har It sure sounded
sweet when I heard signals for the first time.
This is one amazing little receiver! I have been tuning around all
evening copying CW on a busy 40 meters and looking for the weakest
signals up next to strong signals. This SDR does work. This receiver
is better than my Elecraft K1 by far.
I hope there will be a way to expand the band receive range in the
future.
Thanks to all involved in making this kit available at such a
reasonale price.

XG-1 and XG-2
Well, that's kind of what I decided esp. since I
already had an XG1. hi. I agree that the frequency is
not that important. I actually use my PIC-EL with DDS
card more for things like testing the SR-40 than I do
the XG1, but once in awhile the accurate output is a
plus.

Softrock on 60 Meters
I found a 83 cent crystal at Mouser that will put the SR40 on 60
meters. (Digi-Key also has this frequency xtal). It's a 21.4772 mHz
xtal, resulting in an oscillator frequency of 5.3693 mHz. The Mouser
part number is 695-HC49US-214.
This is not the ideal oscillator frequency for this application, but
it does give you three of the five 60m channels; 2, 3, & 4.
Unfortunately channel 3 has the oscillator sitting in the middle of
it, so it's not very useable. However channels 2 and 4 work, and
channel 4 is probably the most active 60M channel.
A 21.562 xtal would be a better (but more expensive) choice; resulting
in an oscillator frequency of 5.3905, which would reside in the 29 kHz
gap between channel 4 and channel 5. This crystal would give you
channels 3, 4, and 5 (channels 4 and 5 are probably the most active).
The SR40 on 60M (or is it a SR60 once converted?) works great. No need
to change the band pass filter either.
