Central Coast Railroad Festival (Calif.) - Show Your Railroad
Central Coast Railroad Festival (Calif.) - Show Your Railroad The Central Coast Railroad Festival returns this year to San Luis Obispo and northern San Barbara Counties on October 4-6, 2019 (Friday-Sunday). As in past years I will organize a tour of model railroads and garden railroads in the above areas. Last year we had thirty-two railroads on the tour and we already have close to twenty for this year. But more railroads always are welcome. If you have an operating railroad I would like you to consider participating in the tour. Participating in a layout tour is a great way to share your work and meet your fellow model and garden railroaders. You’ve probably worked hard on your railroad so you might as well get some recognition from people who will appreciate your efforts. We are only asking railroad owners to be open for four or more hours on just one day. Additional days and hours are at the owner’s option, including "early bird" showings on Thursday, October 3. And we are asking owners in Santa Maria and areas south of Santa Maria to be open only on Sunday, if convenient for them. All you need to do is operate your trains. I will do all the planning and publicity, as I have done for fifty-nine previously tours since 2006, including eight previous tours for the Central Coast Railroad Festival. This tour will be a free, self-guided tour. No buses will be used. If you have any questions before committing to the tour, please ask. In any event, please contact me OFF LIST in the next several weeks if you are interested so we can add your railroad to the tour. Once you have been added to the tour I will contact you later this month to set your days and hours. Thank you. Help Needed -- Can I use an HO/HOn3 transition track on a turntable
8
Good Day folks and thanks in advance if you can help me on this one. I am installing a Mil Scale 65 foot turntable on my HO / HOn3 layout. Can I use a Shinohara HO HOn3 transition track on the turntable to handle both HO and HOn3 locos back onto the layout tracks after I have turned them? HO should be no problem -- it is the HOn3 that I am not sure about. I am using good old fashioned DC to power all the track on this "Old School" layout. I already looked on Google and most of the previous discussion on dual gauge turntables was set on using 4 rails. Again -- thanks in advance for any help you can offer. Please email back to the group or to me directly at dandrews1@....

The Gumstump and Snowshoe
26
Cliff, 15"-16" curves should allow you to do a curved Gumstump and Snowshoe. If you can fit a 2-3 car runaround track on the 18" board, do so. It will enhance the operation of the layout. Best wishes, Joe On 04/06/2019 07:37 PM, Cliff Smith wrote: You may be right about the Gumstump and Snowshoe. A variation of that just might be made to fit if I keep the curve radii tight since there are no turnouts in the middle where the bends would be located. I'll see what I can come up with. Thank you to everyone and if anyone has a better idea don't hesitate to to chime in. Cliff Smith

Really small space help needed
21
This is for HO. I have a small L shaped space that is only 4 feet long on each leg. The width of each leg is 12 inches however one leg could go out to 18 inches. Obviously this is a switching plan, small locos and short cars so allowable track radius could go down to the 15-16 inch range if unavoidable. I haven't been able to think of anything usable but then track planning is not my strong suit. Anyone have any suggestions? Cliff Smith

Have there really been no posts in 2019?

Getting back into the hobby and catching up on which of my Yahoo groups made the moved to io. Also, just noticed the Ness Street Yard track plan on the homepage, it was always a plan I wanted to try. Take care. Paul Pearson Denver, Colorado

Shotgun Tom Kelly's HO Layout
2
This is a link to an nine minute video of Shotgun Tom Kelly's HO Layout, courtesy of Tom Cataldo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDq3zp56Xkk The music and special scenic effects in the video, produced by Jhani Kaye, are a cut above the typical home layout video. At the seven minute mark the video shows the time lapse construction of the layout. Those of you in the Los Angeles and San Diego areas may recognize Tom Kelly as a local radio personality. His father was an Engineer for Santa Fe and actually ran three locomotives represented by models in this video. The suspended layout descends from the ceiling and rests on a pool table when in use. It was built by Lloyd & Betsy Kluesner of Lloyd's Layouts in Paramount, CA. Shotgun has been honored for his work in broadcasting with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, plus 2 Emmy Awards for his work as a television host. He makes his home in San Diego, is heard weekdays on SiriusXM radio's "60's on 6," and is currently President of Pacific Pioneer Broadcasters. SMALL HO scale buildings?
3
Small layouts need small buildings. I'm sure most on this group are familiar with the small cast metal buildings that Woodland Scenics has produced for years. I'm looking for similar size HO scale buildings in metal, wood or resin. I cannot remember manufacturer names from years ago that I can search online for. Something "Timber" comes to mind. Can anyone recommend SMALL (not even Campbell kits size) building kits in HO Scale? Dave

Work in progress, and Happy Thanksgiving!
6
Here's the progress on my '2x4' (actually '4x5' with the extension) O-RR: a folded dogbone with a couple of spurs and a switchback using K-Line/Lionel E-Z Streets. Mock-ups of the now-abandoned Detroit-Superior Viaduct in Cleveland, a brewery and flour mill are in place to check for clearances and finishing. I found that--besides trolleys--a K-Line S-2 switcher will navigate the tight, 8-inch radius curves with standard freight cars, if run s-l-o-w-l-y, but that's to be expected anyhow on an industrial layout. Enjoy and Happy Thanksgiving! John M. Charleston, WV

Layout in a boxfile
23
#106a
Hi, ScaleScenes are a British company producing card model railway kits for buildings and structures at various scales. They are mainly British scene but some of their industrial buildings would not look out of place anywhere. Recently they brought out a complete kit for an industrial layout to fit inside a boxfile: https://scalescenes.com/product/ly01-industrial-boxfile-layout/ I thought this may be of interest to the Small Layout Group. I am not connected to the company, but I have bought and used some of their products on my layout Jenswell. Regards, Chris Nicole

What is a "small layout"
44
While we explore this subject I'd like to point out that "small" is as seen by the beholder. If I can take a layout on a bus in the city or check it as luggage on an airplane flight I might call it "small" for my purposes. OTOH if I'm the owner of a construction crane rigging business with a nice big airconditioned shop building my "small" layout would likely be defined by what my equipment can easily move without too big a crew or permits from the local cops. I kinda like the 24x48 module size having once gotten started in that direction in hopes of participating with a local module group. Now the nature of modules is that they need to be of somewhat more robust construction than a single "pack and hand carry" in a portable case display module. But these types share one common problem. They're subject to handling shocks and vibrations that are a good bit stronger than what they will experience in the train room. A very small layout like a pizza size has the benefit overy low mass and relatively high stiffness of its litttle parts. Beyond that some amount of vibtation/shock isolation (blocks of foam) around the layout in its carrying box is easier to do. If some of you out there have built your own carrying cases or found some commercially available container that works real well how about starting a thread here on carrying cases and tell us about it. What is a "small layout"?
4
Hello group - I may have missed this as an answer to the question at hand, but to me a "small layout" is just that - a small layout. Not a module (though some of these may be operated as independent layouts in the smaller scales such as N or Z). To me a small layout is a permanent structure occupying no more than a small bedroom such as shelf layouts that are 2' deep and which run around the walls of the room, or a physically small layout (hence the name) such as the Oklahoma and Western (4' x 7'). Just my two Lincolns. Mike Calo Odenton MD (the town a railroad built)

Standardized legs for ultralight modules
8
Ed, Here is an image illustrating the legs we used in our modular group. They are made of 1 x 2 poplar with ?” dowels as spacers. The typical width of the assembly is 10-5/8”, but I have sets that are as much as 20” in width for use with 24” wide modules. I also have a standard shelf that can bridge between the dowels which we use for power supplies, etc. A black curtain conceals the legs when the layout is set up. All the legs for the layout fold down, stack, are strapped together, and can be carried by one person. They lay flat in the bottom of my car truck. Tom K. I'm missing something here..... EdW
