Juvenile Black-crowned Night Heron?
开云体育A friend spotted this bird along the Pocket Canal at the “Golden Hour” and texted us this photo. We got there as soon as we could but by then it was the “Blue Hour” so none of these photos may be true to color. Our Merlin app identified these photos as a Black-crowned Night Heron but none of the pictures in any of our bird books matched our photos. Hoping one of you out there can help us identify this beautiful creature! He or she had the most distinctive single long white feather on the back of his/her head- very elegant! He or she stayed out there looking for dinner till well after dark but was initially spotted well before dark so not sure if (s)he’s a night heron or not… Di and Morris Erickson? Pocket Area |

3 Teal Day - Correction
As Max Brodie points out below, the picture I included in my email was an Eurasian Green-winged Teal, also known as Common Teal.? Its been several years since I've seen that, so I apologize for the error.? On the other hand, I also saw the American Green-winged Teal, so it was a 4 Teal day.
Thanks for catching that, Max.

Beautiful set of teal photos! ?You may not realize that the Green-winged Teal you photographed is the Eurasian subspecies (considered a full species, Common Teal, in Europe). ?The horizontal white stripe and bold white outline to the facial pattern separate it from American Green-winged Teal. This is an excellent find, as they are fairly rare. ?

Re: Lake Solano
开云体育
Barrow's!? I was hunting for them on the American River this weekend at William B. Pond Rec Area and the Nimbus Fish Hatchery, but to no avail.?
Does anyone have a reliable site to see Barrow's goldeneyes?? Also, what are reliable field marks for distinguishing between female Barrow's and female common goldeneyes??
Best,
David

Re: Magpies! South Land Park
开云体育?Have you all seen the beautiful, metal yellow-billed magpies on the new pedestrian footbridge crossing over I-Five near Sutterville Road? ?It’s been there for a few months but I just noticed it today! My husband does all the driving and I usually am looking down at my phone texting or emailing but for some reason today I looked up just as we came to it and it is so beautiful! ?At first, we thought there were all different types of birds but it’s all magpies so I think you’re right David, that they are emblematic of this region. Thanks for telling us of your sightings, Catherine! I’ll be on the lookout for them here in the Pocket!? Di and Morris Erickson? On Jan 28, 2022, at 11:48 AM, David Crow <dbcrow@...> wrote:

That's great.? Maybe they're bouncing back!?
I've loved that bird since I moved to Sacramento.? It's so emblematic of the region.? I was once listening to a radio show where they happened to be interviewing a woman from the Central Valley (maybe Modesto?) living in New York.? She said she had a tattoo
of a yellow-billed magpie just to remember where she was from.? I'm not a tattoo guy, but that was pretty cool.?

Over the past week, I have seen a few yellow-billed magpies in my backyard trees. This is so exciting because I haven’t seen ANY since West Nile Virus started. It’s been years.

Re: Kinglet behavior
开云体育I have not been able to load your original video, but your comments sound like typical Kinglet gleaning/feeding behavior.?Steve On Dec 11, 2021, at 2:15 PM, odonata23 <odonata23@...> wrote:

开云体育Sub-hash, Here are my two cents. I recently read a communication from the American Audubon Society indicating it is not unusual for birds on windowsills to become fascinated with their reflection and look at their reflection either as a threat or an attractive image. Maybe your bird is fixated in some way... Cheers, Eric Ross -------- Original message -------- From: "Subhash Chand via groups.io" <SubhashC@...> Date: 12/11/21 1:53 PM (GMT-08:00) Cc: woodzos@... I have stood within a foot of the window where the Kinglet can easily see me but it does not seem to bother it.? Still open to any ideas on why its doing this.

appreciation for the group
Thanks for saying this, Kathy--I, too, very rarely post photos or comments, but greatly appreciate and learn from everyone's contributions. Long live birds and their passionate observers--happy bird-watching December, everyone!
