Question - Putah Creek
Hello Birders, I plan to cover the Putah Creek area on Friday this week. First time that side of the town. Is it safe to sport a Camera and long lens ? Also any recommendation / hot spots for birding there ? I read about a few Pygmy Owls in that side a well. Any pointers will be appreciated. Madhan

Cooper's hawk 4
This afternoon we had an unexpected visitor - a Cooper's Hawk. It apparently saw the birds on our backyard feeder and came at sat on the fence waiting for them to come back. He waited for more than 20 minutes but the other birds were not going to come while he was there. Anyway, it gave me plenty of time to get some nice shots. Rufous Hummingbird 5
While Anna's Hummers are here everyday, Rufous Hummers are not seen often. Today, a female Rufous was in my Fair Oaks backyard for at least an hour, but instead of going to the feeder, it was hanging around in an olive tree. Subhash

QUESTION 5
Hi Everyone- I saw a bird today at my ground feeder with a reddish orange breast and the wings were black with white running through them. I'm not an expert birder like most of you so I wonder if anyone knows what bird this is. Unfortunately I didn't have my camera handy. I've never seen it before and mostly just get white crowned sparrows, dark eyed junkos, scrub jays and mourning doves at the feeder so I was surprised and happy to see him or her. Thanks in advance! Oodles of finch and geese galore…
Download Attachment Available until Apr 29, 2023 ?Greetings, fellow birders! It’s been a rough couple of months of inclement weather for our feathered friends but we’re still seeing throngs of finch flocking to our feeders and fountain, lots of ducks at the duckpond in William Land Park (including a lone brilliantly-colored wood duck), and just yesterday, during our walk on the Pocket Canal Parkway, a couple of arguing Canada geese on a rooftop. They were making such a racket I walked over to investigate and took a quick video with my phone. They were arguing for at least 10 minutes, (maybe about which way the rest of their group had flown?) when finally, one of the pair flew back down to the canal. By the end of our walk it was starting to rain and that’s when we heard them flying overhead (hopefully in the right direction), still arguing noisily…. You don't see a perching Canada Goose every day. About 20 feet up in a large dead oak. Troy

perching goose
What a beautiful shot, Troy! A rare sight, indeed, yet quite zen. On Tuesday, February 14, 2023, 2:47:29 PM PST, Troy Edson-Smith <troyes@...> wrote: You don't see a perching Canada Goose every day. About 20 feet up in a large dead oak. Troy

Cooper's hawk in Land Park? 3
This hawk flew into our Land Park backyard this afternoon. I think it is a Cooper’s Hawk. Correct? (You can catch a glimpse of its tail extended in flight in the third photo)

Muscovy Duck ( Wild type) 3
FYI On 7/29 there were a couple " wild type" Muscovy Ducks (females) at McKinley Park Pond, presumably escapees. Sorry for the late post.

Hummingbird time 4
I now have four species of Hummingbird at my feeder this week. Anna's. Black-chinned, Rufous, and showing up for the first time in many years, the Calliope below. The picture of the male is not very good for ID, in that the rosy chest is entirely due to reflected light from the feeder. Ever see a hummer blink? Troy

Bell's Sparrow
The Bell's Sparrow is not a common bird in our area and I was lucky to see one at the Pine Hill Preserve on April 17. Subhash The following description is from the All About Birds website: The Bell’s Sparrow is a neat, gray-headed sparrow emblematic of California’s coastal sage and chaparral. They also occur in Baja California, the Mojave Desert, and on San Clemente Island, California (a federally threatened subspecies). Like the very similar Sagebrush Sparrow, these birds spend much of their time foraging for insects and seeds on the ground underneath shrubs. In spring males sing a fast mix of trills and chips from the tallest perches they can find.

Hummingbird Torpor 4
Looked out the window on the cold Wednesday morning, and saw perched on our stucco what I assumed was a bat. No, it was an Anna's in torpor. First time I've seen it. It is upside down with claws locked onto the stucco. It stayed there until about 2pm, and then flew away. Regards, Troy

Juvenile Black-crowned Night Heron? 3
A friend spotted this bird along the Pocket Canal at the “Golden Hour” and texted us this photo. We got there as soon as we could but by then it was the “Blue Hour” so none of these photos may be true to color. Our Merlin app identified these photos as a Black-crowned Night Heron but none of the pictures in any of our bird books matched our photos. Hoping one of you out there can help us identify this beautiful creature! He or she had the most distinctive single long white feather on the back of his/her head- very elegant! He or she stayed out there looking for dinner till well after dark but was initially spotted well before dark so not sure if (s)he’s a night heron or not… Di and Morris Erickson Pocket Area
