On 7/29 there were a couple " wild type" Muscovy Ducks (females) at McKinley Park Pond, presumably escapees. Sorry for the late post.

Bell's Sparrow

The Bell's Sparrow is not a common bird in our area and I was lucky to see one at the Pine Hill Preserve on April 17.?
Subhash

The following description is from the All About Birds website:
The Bell’s Sparrow is a neat, gray-headed sparrow emblematic of California’s coastal sage and chaparral. They also occur in Baja California, the Mojave Desert, and on San Clemente Island, California (a federally threatened subspecies). Like the very similar Sagebrush Sparrow, these birds spend much of their time foraging for insects and seeds on the ground underneath shrubs. In spring males sing a fast mix of trills and chips from the tallest perches they can find.

Do they normally hang upside down like that? I always pictured them perched on a limb.?

WOW!!! What a great shot, Troy! Thanks for sharing! We have Anna’s flitting all about our yard all year round and I’ve never seen that either! I was especially concerned for them when we had that hard freeze for four days a few months ago. Good to know they can do that to get through those especially cold days!

Hoping one of you out there can help us identify this beautiful creature! He or she had the most distinctive single long white feather on the back of his/her head- very elegant! He or she stayed out there looking for dinner till well after dark but was initially spotted well before dark so not sure if (s)he’s a night heron or not…
