Re: KX2 vs IC705

I have both the KX-3 and IC-705.? I highly recommend the KX-3.? Love both radios but 99% of the time I am using the KX-3

Re: KX2 vs IC705

Just a note, I have used the AX1 antenna with a tripod in a National Park site where antenna restrictions occur (i.e. no wires in trees and no ground stakes). Try as I might I can not get it to be resonant on 20 meters;although it is supposed to be possible. The T1 ATU seems to have trouble establishing a match. The KX2 may have more capability to match the antenna. I use a QRP 5w CW inly radio with the whip.?
That said both of my attempts for a POTA activation have been successful. Most distant contact was around 850 miles.?
If anyone has suggestions on reaching resonance with the AX1 on 20M please contact me.?
Good Luck!

I have a kx3 and a 705. ?For pota cw I prefer the kx3, and it has a morse decoder which is pretty good. ?The 705 has a built in waterfall which is ok, but for the kx3 you need the px3 to get the same feature. ?For pota it is not necessary. ?Also the 705 has vhf and uhf built in, for the kx3 vhf is an option. ?Lastly the 705 has a nice battery which again is extra on the elecraft. ?Have fun, either will do the job.

With the KX2 you will need to order the built-in tuner.? With the IC705, you will need to purchase the external tuner.?

Re: KX2 vs IC705

Hi Brady,
We have both and only grab the KX2 for POTA, it is smaller, lighter and can have an internal ATU.? This is the deal breaker for the 705, it is a rare outing where an ATU was not needed for POTA.
The 705 has all the bells and whistles and makes a nice shack rig with an amp.

Re: Help Identify Kit

I did a very deep dig....
?
It is indeed the SW40 not "40+" the differnce is toroids replaced with IF cans.
As typical Of Dave Benson he would evolve his kit designs to make them
easier to build (avoids toriodphobia) so SW40 became SW40+ and later DSW....
?
I could post the article here as it has coil winding data but its from the ARRL
archive and copyrighted.?
?
Its in the QST November 1994.? Its not a build manual but does have the
complete parts list and coil winding data.? If you are an ARRL member
go to the page log in and use the periodical search function plug in
those dates and Benson for the author (his call was NN1G then).

Its likely close enough.

Yes, some of the torid coils were repalced with canned adjustable coils.
Big visual change and more work (wind coils!) but circuit barely changed.

Re: Help Identify Kit

Thank you Allison.

The manual showing the PCB layout is different than the PCB I have. Look closely at the layout on page 9 in the manual and my picture. The manual is dated Oct 1998. My board says SWL 11/94. So there much be an earlier manual out there somewhere.

Re: Help Identify Kit

Good observation, but I did not provide you with enough details. The ICs are wrapped in foil, not visable in the photo. The 6-pin IC has to be from something else, he had various unassembled kits, stuffed into the same bag. The XTALs are there. I need to do an inventory, but first...

I searched for a manual for this. Came up with some, but my board is slightly different from all the manuals I found online. I just joined the SWKits on groups.io. Will be posting there to see if I can come up with the correct manual. Interesting little project.

My next CW practice session will be?March 23 at 15:00 EDT / 19:00 UTC on 20 meters.?Anyone and everyone is welcome. This practice is intended for operators who are new to CW or they need some practice. IT DOES NOT MATTER HOW POOR YOUR CW IS. Mistakes are OK. Poor fists are OK. Slow speed is OK. Really slow speed is OK. This practice is meant for you to improve your CW. I will do my best to adjust to your skill level. Operate at any power level. If several stations show up, I will operate as a round-table control station. I will do it as a round-table so everyone gets a chance to transmit. Please listen to my directions.

Details:
Date - March 23 2025
Time - 15:00 EDT ?19:00 UTC
Band - 20 Meters

How to find me - I will find a clear frequency and call CQ. Go to the Reverse Beacon Network and search for my call sign AB8DF.

That will tell you what frequency I am on. Tune your station to that frequency and if you hear me give me a call. If there is a QSO in progress, please wait for a break in the action. Then send your callsign. If I hear you, I will invite you to join the QSO and start a round-table QSO.

Reply to this email if you have questions.
