Ready for the 80M Fox Hunt? Test your capabilities tonight!

n9ne_todd

Greetings!

The 80M Fox Hunt begins Tuesday evening (9 to 10:30 pm EST),
November 29, and runs for ten weeks. Details and Fox schedules will
soon be posted.

Tonight (Monday, November 7), the Adventure Radio Society will hold
its monthly "Spartan Sprint" from 9 to 11 pm EST. A number of
stations will be on or around the 3.560 QRP watering hole
calling 'CQ SP'. This gives us a chance to test our stations'
capabilities for making long as well as short distance contacts. In
the actual Fox Hunts, we will have Foxes from the left to the right
coasts, with some in between. Tonight's participants will span the
continent as well. Give it a try, and if your station is not up to
the task, you have three weeks to make improvements before the very
first 80M Fox Hunt begins. The exchange is short: RST, SPC and Power
out. Click on
<>
for specifics. There is an autolog on the website if you want to
enter your results and any soapbox comments.

Hope to work you tonight!

Re: SS Practice

Marshall,

From some of the stuff that I heard on the bands this weekend, for some of these guys, the practice did no good, whatsoever!

Dave said--

Actually I was doing that on 80 after bagging both foxes.?? It was
helpful as I found a problem with my logging software that I needed to
fix....lots of room on (unused) upper 80m cw.<<

Sorry, but the idea of an SS practice still leaves me a bit cold. Shouldn't
any CW activity serve as practice, if you really feel the need to practice for
a specific event? Whatever the justification for a "practice event" it would
not excuse poor operating practices, which is what we were complaining about.

I'm sure some say what's
all this fox stuff generating un-needed pile ups on 40 meters..<<

Yeah, but they ARE the event. Not a "practice."

qfox Group calendar

Greg

Just wondering if the qfox group moderator(s) might consider
activating the Yahoo Group calendar? I use the Yahoo calendar as part
of my My Yahoo home page and this is the one group I wouldn't mind
populating my calendar. It might prove handy for others as well.

On the other hand, I unsubscribed from the SolidCpyCW group simply
because it populated every single day of my calendar with a 3905 Club
WAS Net reminder. I liked that group, but didn't like what it
did to my calendar.

I guess what I'm asking is, would you activate the calendar, but don't
over do it with too many reminders? Maybe have one weekly for the 40M
hunt and another for the 80M hunt.

Finally, thanks for the group, and thank you to the Fox Hunt
organizers and volunteers.

Glad I wasn't the only one with zippo.? Bill was actually hitting S5 +? on the IC-703 meter at the start.? Piece of cake I thought so went looking for Dave cause I figured he was on the East Coast and I better work him first.? Couldn't hear him and when I went back to Bill ten minutes later he dropped down near the noise level for the rest of the hunt.? Heard a big pile up on his freq the whole time though.? Only heard a few hounds working Dave and never did hear him.? Looking forward to tryin 80 meters.

Why wouldn't it work? If I had had sense enough to write down some of
the calls I would have been quite happy to fire up the linear and and call
CQ Fos right on top of them.
I suppose SS "Practice" is legal, but there is not excuse for poor
operating procedure and the OOs should be sending out a lot of postcards. Hmmm... maybe we could designate ourselves as "UOs" (Unoffical Observers) and do
something. How about a "Hall of Shame" web site, or, wait for it-- the NOC

At least according to my low-tech calibration anyway.

Bill (low) was working down mostly, sometimes on frequency. Got him down about 1Hz.

Dave (high) was working up mostly but simplex when I think I worked him at 0313 or so.

Just as a head check...where were the foxes anyway and were the listening up
or down most of the time?
