7mm. Scale South African Railways 91 class model
I have post some photos of the first bogie I have completed, the bogies are fully sprung as per the prototype axle drive boxes are NWSL although I am not impressed with the quality of the boxes as you can see in the front on photo the housing don't actually close up properly. /g/o14/album?id=60886

I have tried again to upload some photos to the website and failed. HOF The 1876 Festiiniog Train This time they have been resized to around 20% of the original. Two go on but the other four failed. Any ideas? Is there a maximum upload limit per day or such like? Also tried from Flickr but can’t do that either.... HELP !

Welshpool loco from Dorset Kits
3
Paul is probably too modest or thinks being 17.5mm gauge it doesn't belong here: /g/o14/wiki/HoF-Models-Welshpool-loco-from-Dorset-Kits Paul - please feel free to edit this page with more info and/or point to other links as you see fit. I tried adding a hashtag of #o17.5 but it seems groups.io doesn't allow '.' in them! John

Back to back gauge
46
I am in the process of getting a back to back gauge produced for me by Model Railway Parts. I have been after one for a while, I am aware of what is on the market but they are not quite what I am after. The gauge will be similar to the standard gauge one they offer at present http://www.modelrailwayparts.com/Product-Track-Gauge-Back-to-Back.html The back to back will be 12.4mm. At present I do not have a cost for the item, as with all things the more I order the cheaper it will be, so I am looking to see what the interest in such an item would be. I have ordered 5 to start with but if more people are interested I can get a price on what an increased order would be. If you are interested let me know. I know several people have made excellent ones, but I do not have the skills or equipment to do so. Kind regards James Hockley

Sensible resolution limits
5
I am drawing up a coal skip that I intend to have 3D printed by Shapeways using their Ultra Frosted Detail process, which uses 16 micron layers. It is very easy to get carried away and attempt to reproduce every single detail. Some of the bolt heads would scale out to about .3mm diameter by .15mm high. This still equates to about 10 layers in the 16 micron process. At the moment I am representing cuphead bolts with simple cylinders; this may change. I am wondering about a sensible minimum size limit for details before you just give up and decide you could never see it on the model anyway. I am trying to decide between the two extremes of "I can't see it at arms length, so don't bother" and "yes, but I know it's there". What are the groups thoughts on what the sensible limits are? For those interested the skips ran on the Corrimal Colliery tramway near Wollongong in New South Wales. The tramway was 2ft gauge and about a mile long. It used steam locomotives to haul skips from the adit to a cable worked incline. I am using KB Scale 7mm diameter wheels. One nice thing about 14mm gauge is that everything is almost exactly to scale. About the only compromise I have made is that the inside bearings need to cope with 1.5mm diameter axles which are a bit over scale. Regards, Michael Milway

Ultrasonic cleaners
14
I’ve had my US cleaner a year now but not really got to grips with it. Am I expecting too much for a 20 minute clean on 60 degrees to be enough to get a chassis clean enough and decreased to take a dip in Casey’s gun blue? I am using Ultrasil solution. I rinsed well then dunked the chassis. Half went patchy black and half stayed stubbornly nickel coloured. Is this the best solution? Do I need a solvent degrease as well? Very little written about ultrasonic cleaners and solutions etc in the model press over the years. Also, many have advocated sand blasting. I cannot make it work! Also the instructions for Phoenix etch primer tell you NOT to abrade the surface. Help from the experts please, I know that we had a similar discussion with Roy a few years ago on the Yahoo group but need a fresh opinion.

Soldering advice for wiring up decoders
11
I'm in the process of re-chipping my K1 with Zimos and am hitting a problem I often have, which is cleanly soldering fine wires. I have an ERSA temperature controlled soldering iron with a variety of tips but often find I can't get a clean coating of solder on the tip nor cleanly tin the end of a wire, and then quickly solder such a wire to the tiny connector pads. I've tried both tin&lead and tin&silver cored solders but suspect this may be part of the problem. Should I stick with tin&silver with a dedicated tip? And what size tip is best and should I use any flux? I would really appreciate some advice from experienced chip fitters. John

Hello, I would like tojoin in on the new to O14 thread. I purchased a DHR locomotive and would like to build a small switching module. My problem is that I can not find any track gauges or rulers in USA. Where is a good UK internet store to purchase these items Thank you, Matt, Freeland, Maryland, USA

Starting up
20
Hi guys. I’ve been wanting to go in to 2ft narrow Gauge in 7mm for a while now but I can’t seem to find anyway. On the slaters website they have some but when reading it says that the Gauge is 3/4 of an inch. Which I don’t believe is right. If anyone could point me in the right direction that would be great!! And any other info for starting up would be great. Many thanks Thomas

Getting started in 7mm finescale NG
14
I was reading a similarly titled pamphlet over the weekend and feel that we could really do with something similar with a finescale focus - and open to all via our wiki. The aforementioned pamphlet seems to assume the reader will be starting railway modelling in 7mm NG, whereas my experience is many are existing modellers and want to model NG properly. I'm thinking we could have sections covering approaches to modelling different types of track, couplings, wheels, etc and specific prototypes. Perhaps a para or two on each aspect with links and/or dedicated pages for more in depth material. I think we should focus on NG specific things rather than general modelling stuff such as DCC and baseboard joints. However, Paul's superb accomplishments with sound and smoke do deserve a section. I welcome your thoughts. John

Transfers by EDM Models
2
Yesterday in the topic for the Slaters L&B Wagons I mentioned some new transfers from EDM Models in preparation and promises more info so here it is: - Many will know that I had a business relationship with a known source of transfers the idea being I bought them in bulk and then retailed them. That didn't work out and the arrangement was terminated last summer. I promised at the time that I would seek to replace these with my own source. Nothing happened for a quite awhile due to other pressures but we're now just a couple of weeks away from having our first decals from the new source available. Here are some of the features of the first sets: - * Created from the same artwork as the currently used full size transfers * Printed by the same company that makes the full size transfers * Very fine waterslide transfers * Produced by a mix of screen and digital printing * Sheets in 7mm & 4mm Scale * Comprehensive sheets for the subject - no having to buy seperate packs of crests/numbers/letters The first four sets will be * FR Carriage Transfers in 7mm * F&WHR Carriage Transfers in 7mm * FR Carriage Transfers in 4mm * F&WHR Carriage Transfers in 4mm The exact layout of the sheets isn't decided yet and I may involve you in that although a similar offer on a 009 forum brought no input at all The image below is a mobile phone shot of a sample BR crest supplied as a sample Where we are up to is this. I have a commission model to build to a deadline and some transfers are being produced for that and some of the preparation paves the way for the later sets. To illustrate what I mean by complete sheets this is just a mock up image of what are being done for me in one sheet Note - the 102's in black are actually white letters but that wouldn't show up here. There may later be some crest only sheets for loco and, maybe, some specials for the pullmans and obs cars. After the FR and F&WHR I would like to do the L&B loco's, coaches and wagons. BUT - always a but isn't there This process isn't cheap and getting these first sheets done is going to cost me a sizeable lump of cash (although given the process it'll probably be a lifetime supply of transfers). Its entirely dependant on when I can afford them. If the first ones sell then I'll go on to do others. If they don't the plan probably ends with these sheets. I will post the first draft of the layouts when I have them for comment and suggestions and the endless debate of the ratio of crests to numbers and how many 1 & 0's to include in the carriage numbering Paul Martin EDM Models

Slaters L&B Coach Kit
18
The forthcoming Slaters L&B Coach kit is approaching completion as other have said. EDM Models has recently become a dealer for Slaters products with the intention of stocking mostly their narrow gauge ranges. Our initial order (for 16mm Scale items) should be with us on Monday and I have discussed the L&B range with Slaters and will be stocking it as soon as its available Having exchanged e-mails with David White today there are a couple of things outstanding to do before the kit is available with the hope that it would be available by the end of the month. That is a hope rather than a promise. Slaters won’t be attending NGSW and never had any plans to so not sure where that part of the rumour originated. When I asked about NGSW David said, “We are not at Shepton Mallet so you are welcome to fly the flag for us providing we have no problems with production.” Guess that makes EDM Models the launch partner for NGSW. You won’t find any mention of them on the www.ngtrains.com website yet but I am thinking of providing the opportunity to purchase online but also the means to reserve for collection at NGSW so I have some idea at least how many to take with me. I will do a further post when there is more news Inevitably the release of the Slaters L&B kits will prompt the question “when will your Manning Wardle Kit be available”. All I can say for the moment is that it is now being actively worked on but is still a little way off. At present some research and testing is going into what motor/gearbox will be supplied with the kit with it being likely that it will get an upgrade to a coreless motor and custom gearbox. This research stems from the closing of Mashima and wanting to future proof the kit. For the moment that is all I want to say about it. Before more is made public I need to have contacted all the customers with reservations and I want to do that once there is something to show them Regards Paul Martin EDM Models

Using OOn3 wheels from Dundas Models
I have finally added my own item to the wiki ‘Resources’! This is on the recently introduced 8mm metal wheels from Dundas Models. https://dundasmodels.co.uk/webstore/index.php/hikashop-menu-for-module-108/category/542-dundas-models-00n3-wheels-bearings The OOn3 12mm gauge wheels come on 20mm long, 1.5mm diameter axles which match those in my Roy C Link wagon kits. The wheel tread is thinner but a re-gauged pair fitted to a skip chassis seems to go through my track okay (although I have not tried shunting under power yet – still working on the scenery). The pair I have run true and didn’t take too much effort to push out on the axle. My main reason for looking into these is because I need a source of wheels to go into a diesel chassis designed for 2mm diameter axles, but I can sleeve the 1.5mm axles through the bearings and gear. They should also be okay for the front bogie on my WDLR Baldwin project. I have to admit that I have struggled with the KB Scale loco wheels as I don’t have a wheel press and I am too ham fisted to get them to go on true or concentric, so an apparently fool-proof alternative is very welcome. Dundas Models also do 9mm wheels to 12mm gauge, which again opens up more possibilities. Cheers, Robin

Thought I'd check KB Scale's web site today only to find that the old one has gone and in its place is a message stating that they are working on a new website. Lets hope this means that they will be trading again soon. Paul
