10m 1200b ssb
I did an experiment last evening using the IC7200 and FT991a, swapping each with a kpc3 and SCS Tracker, in 1200b mode. Each combination decoded nicely, but not before making a few adjustments. I used to use the kpc-3 to work R0ISS, 2m packet many yrs. ago. I had wired a cable; db-9 to 6pin mini din, to interface the KPC-3 to use with an FT 100D. The Tracker and the FT991A uses the same 6 pin mini din as well. I set each rig side by side, fed to dummy loads. I tried to connect one to the other. When I first tried I had issues with with the IC 7200 not hearing. I have a lot of noise at the qth, and needed to use a lot of noise reduction setting on both rigs. I discovered the (NR), noise reduction was set to 4., after having used it on 20m. I disengaged it, and immediately began receiving packets. I also opened up the receive filter setting on both. Oddly however, I have very little noise on 10m and why I tend to use it more, till the noise issue gets resolved here. I have found 10m open much of the time from Nov. thru Mar. I backed off the ALC to where there is little to no indication on the meter. I am using a KaNode; node/bbs/ and keyboard today at least, pending brief periods It will be off when doing errands. 73/warren wb7ecu Sent with Proton Mail secure email.

Mod Level changes between apps? 5
With the proliferation of digital modes and the apps that work with them I've started to notice that I have to constantly go back and adjust the ALC on the rig. I'm on Windows10 and I have set the ALC up for VARAHF/VARAC. But when I go to Soundmodem/EasyTerm I see my ALC is way up. Is it necessary to revisit the speaker level each time I change apps? Since the last time I was operating packet in the early 90s I didn't jump from mode to mode so it was not a problem. I'm running into it going from Pkt to PSK31 on FLDigi to VARAC. If that's the way it works then I just need to incorporate it into my process. I just want to know if I'm doing something wrong? 73 Mike

10m 2
Chris 28.105 LSB is what had been used before. I believe years back the Canadian hams had FM up around 28.186. From there I believe they had a high speed uplink to vhf/uhf, to where they could traverse much of Canada. It has been a long time so details are a bit sketchy in my head. I had seen discussions on forums from the past where there was quite a discussion as to whether an op could use 1200B packet on 10m., but not enough for me to feel comfortable trying it. For keybd, 28.105 would work ok, but for setup with BBS/keybd, something up around 28.135 usb +- traffic, might be a better choice. Just a thought. Auto control segment =28.120-28.189. 73/warren Sent with Proton Mail secure email.

RE-10m packet 3
I was up on 10m and tried calling each one of the stations that had planned on going up there. No success. I did hear a Canadian station, think it was in the ve2 neck 'O the woods, tried him but was unable to connect. I saw another station K0OG, Joe running a qrp Yaesu, ie, 5 watts or so. We had a QSO, then a bit later our path dropped out around 1900 Z. 28.105 was where I got my start in Packet in the late 80's. I am sure there are some who did the same. I used to connect to a JA prefix BBS at times years ago, and digied thru east coast stations to work DL's. Last week, 10m opened up a bit early. 10m tends to open up later, like in Nov. fairly consistently, then drops off as we get farther into spring. There are days during the winter when it can be dead, but many contacts can be made often in the winter mo. Here in Idaho early afternoon hrs lately have been the best for me. I access an RP node much of the winter months located in KY. Last week on 10m I made some cw DX contacts to DL's, ZL's, a JA, and an EB1. Then on 30m an OH1 on 10.109 cw, all with the GAP antenna. The Band has opened up, and hopefully for a while. 73/warren wb7ecu Sent with Proton Mail secure email.

HF Packet + Misc. 2
Hi Mike, First my apologies on the web link typo, but as you said, you found it. Correct, Network105 packet started on 20 meters in 1986 and members have been populating 30 and 40 meters recently. No official "Network105" on 10 meters :-) But that doesn't mean we're not interested in hearing about your HF packet fun over there. Robust Packet uses 500 Hz of bandwidth with 60 Hz spacing between carriers, and uses OFDM with 8 DBPSK or DQPSK carriers. On 200 bps mode, it uses BPSK. For 600 bps mode, DQPSK is used. For both modes, each subcarrier runs at a constant rate of 50 Bd. Like Packet, Robust Packet uses the AX.25 frame protocol for transmitting data. Compared to Packet, Robust Packet has better resistance against multipath propagation and fading. Unfortunately, there aren't many Robust Packet operators in the world compared to other modes and the TNCs can get expensive. Since VARA isn't packet and lacks all the advantages that packet has, I don't bother with it. But don't let me stop you. Have fun with all the modes! While you are correct that packet took a backseat during the "Packet Apocalypse," a phrase I coined for the internet killing packet - AX.25 packet has become EXTREMELY popular in recent years. I author the Nationwide Amateur Radio Packet Directory Map which lists Nodes, BBS, Mailboxes, Packet to Pager Gateways, etc. In the past two years, the maps has had over 115,000 views. I started a Worldwide Packet Map as well and the views are climbing. FB on the 7300. I own a 7100 but haven't set it up yet... BBS's and Messages 5
Hello all, I'm back on HF packet, have been for about 3 months now and am really enjoying it. I was active on HF packet for the best part of 15 years from the early 80's until the mid 90's and like I said it's good to be back. I do have a question about packet procedure these days. Back when I was on HF, the full service BBS's transferred mail back and forth within their "network" by using a series of "backbones" which of course were on different frequencies. It worked pretty well and I can remember exchanging messages with other hams around the US. Fun stuff. I realize of course that that's not really happening anymore and that's perfectly fine. I live on the East Coast in MA and for some reason I seem to have a real good "pipeline" to SOLBBS (N0HI). He's got a BBS that does a good job and I can get into it easily on a very consistent basis so, naturally it's the one I use. Other hams on Net105 and I are communicating by leaving messages in each others pbbs on the TNC's. It works of course but HF being what it is, sometimes it's easier then others. I also do an "L" over on SOLBBS each day to check bulletins and to see what is there that I might be interested in. So.....my question (finally) is this. If I see a bulletin on SOLBBS say from a ham in FL or somewhere else and I'd like to reply to him and if I do so on SOLBBS will it work its way to him like the old days or will it just sit on SOLBBS? Also, if see another ham's beacon or whatever can I drop him a note at SOLBBS and hope it works it way to him? I'm thinking in both instances the answer is no and I totally understand. There is no BBS forwarding on Network105. I'm not being critical at all, I totally understand, I just want to get a clear understanding on the bulletins I see streaming by when I list them. I also from time to time like to send bulletins of my own out on a BBS as it's fun to get the responses that I see from other hams around the country / world. I am just thinking that there's no sense in me doing so as they'll not be broadcast anywhere. So.....am I right? Thanks everyone, I appreciate your help. 73 Jim W1JT

Net105 Observations 14
Hey All, I'm not a rules stickler but a significant number of stations I hear are not following the suggestions set out by the originator of this network. I readily admit to having a few mistakes in my configuration that ran afoul but it was unintentional and I have since fixed it. This is amateur radio after all. I think some of the faux pas are due to ignorance as packet radio setups can be complicated but others are definitely intentional. This makes passing traffic on the net more difficult for all of us. It's worth reviewing the recommendations on the homepage if you haven't. After having the station up for a while and analyzing the traffic I observe regular: * Digipeating * APRS * Aliases * WX * RMS traffic * Excessively long and short PAC lengths * Excessively long FRACK times Some of the most insidious problems are actually poorly configured radios and fundamental modem misconfigurations that make communicating nearly impossible. I'm hoping the documentation I'm working on will help to correct this issue over time.

My first AX25 HF packet node is up! 19
Greetings, I've set up a BPQCHAT/BPQBBS node in DM14. We'll see how it goes. I set up the node to the best of my abilities to adhere to the net guidelines posted. I will be writing up a guide on my blog for fellow mastodon radio users so don't be surprised to see some influx of activity. We're interested in seeing what the state of HF packet is and possibly setting up our own network just to see what the exercise is like but wanted to get our feet wet here first. Most of us are technically literate radio amateurs and some have prior packet networking experience. Station here is an FT-897D @ 100W w/ SCU-17 & RPi4b > LDG 600 PRO II > 1:1 Choke > Open wire line fed nonresonant dipole @ 7.5m AGL The station is currently running Raspberry Pi OS, linpbq, direwolf, hamlib, and QtTermTCP all compiled from the latest source I could find. I've decoded some DX EU packets already and am regularly hearing the East Coast US so RX should be good to go. Tested TX with tones to set the level. Let me know if I'm doing anything wrong, I'm here to soak up the technical tidbits. Best, Chris, N6CTA

VarAC POTA activation attempt 3
Hello, I was planning on activating this Thursday Sept 14 using VarAC on 14.108 (slot 14). Has anyone else used VarAC as an operating mode for POTA? Any suggestions? Leo, VE3ZLG

Linbpq, KamPlus 2
I'm wondering if anyone has used a KamPlus for Linbpq? I have the VHF port set up and it works great but, I can't get the HF port to work properly. I can send a connect request to a nearby station and his station hears and responds. I don't think my station is hearing his ACK. I'm not printing any 300 Baud beacons either. I set my Kam with a mark of 1400 and Space 1600, Shift to Modem and CD Software before placing it in Kiss mode. I know from experience that the VHF settings should almost work but, there are a few that must be changed for HF operation. Does anyone have any suggestions or a Config file I can look at? Thanks, Mike KO6IZ

why do people persist with AX.25 when more robust modes now exist? 29
Most of my attempts to using 300 baud AX.25 on 20m and 40m bands have been unsuccessful. That's just a personal observation. I know this stuff works just fine for a lot of other people. I'm probably just unfortunate in where I live (Utah) in relation to the main centers of packet activity in the US. But I'd like to know why people are still using AX.25 when there are more robust protocols like Vara and Robust Packet around. Is this because lots of packeteers are still using old hardware TNCs? Nostalgia? I managed to connect right away to a node in Utah using Vara (NS7K is on 7.0934 USB and runs BPQ32 to support a few different ports for Vara and PACTOR on HF and VHF AX.25). AX.25 on the other hand has been a dead loss for me. I'm not trying to be a smartass here. It just seems to me that the network would survive longer if more people were able to participate, which would be facilitated by using more robust modes.

Noise on Frequency 13
Hello all, Happy Labor Day! I'm sitting on 14.105 and trying to download the bulletins on SOLBBS and there's a "warbling" noise that seems to be right on frequency. I've got a strong connection between me and N0HI but it's really making throughput tough. What is it? My guess is it's VARA but I've never used that mode so can't tell for sure. Is anyone else experiencing it? I've been on the frequency now for about a week really enjoying my HF packet but this is pretty much shutting me down. I hope it isn't anything permanent. Jim W1JT
