Re: My first AX25 HF packet node is up!

Edited

Alright, I discovered that switching from direwolf KISS TNC to QtSoundModem using the BPQtoAGW driver introduced some automated behavior related to Nodes broadcasts. I set QUALITY=0 in the AX25 port config to stop that. Let me know if you see anything else bizarre. I also shortened my ID text, set the interval to 10min(legal minimum), and disabled beacon text.

Thanks!

Should be fine, I’m running even later alpha versions and all has been good. Also it helps with testing too!

I will try to connect to you if any of your ID packets make it in to my station Alan. I've seen people try to connect to you but I don't know that I've actually seen anyone successfully connect.

Re: My first AX25 HF packet node is up!

Wow I'm glad it's working that well! I hate to ruin a bad thing but I'm going to move to beta versions of all the software and switch from direwolf to QtSoundModem today. I can't help but want to see what has changed and where things are headed with the core BPQ software.

Let me know if things are worse. lol

Greetings,

I've set up a BPQCHAT/BPQBBS node in DM14. We'll see how it goes. I set up the node to the best of my abilities to adhere to the net guidelines posted.

I will be writing up a guide on my blog for fellow mastodon radio users so don't be surprised to see some influx of activity. We're interested in seeing what the state of HF packet is ?and possibly setting up our own network just to see what the exercise is like but wanted to get our feet wet here first. Most of us are technically literate radio amateurs and some have prior packet networking experience.

Station here is an FT-897D @ 100W?w/ SCU-17 & RPi4b > LDG 600 PRO II > 1:1 Choke > Open wire line fed nonresonant dipole @ 7.5m AGL

The station is currently running Raspberry Pi OS, linpbq, direwolf, hamlib, and QtTermTCP all compiled from the latest source I could find.

I've decoded some DX EU packets already and am regularly hearing the East Coast US so RX should be good to go. Tested TX with tones to set the level.

Let me know if I'm doing anything wrong, I'm here to soak up the technical tidbits.

Best,

Chris, N6CTA

Re: why do people persist with AX.25 when more robust modes now exist?

What a perfect summary:

Quote "These modes were not available to amateurs when AX.25 packet first came out. And now they are. Not the point though. Telling a packeteer to switch to VARA (which isn't even packet) because it's faster is like telling a CW operator to switch to voice because you can say more! LOL. My friend collects QSL cards for his wall. Should I tell him to collect eQSLs instead because it's cheaper? I think you see where I'm going with this..."

that's?exactly how I feel, after all it is HAM Radio - if we want better faster modes just because we must use them, use the internet... or a phone. etc etc

ASFK in many situations turns out to work great, just like RTTW and CW still do.

There is room for all, even Vara (although I dislike it is closed source Windows only, this is not the spirit) - we can make it work on linux, that's a small blessing...

Where packet asfk does work, and it works great often on VHF and also HF, let's use it, that's why :)

All the best, de Louis / kd2yck

Here is another map of AX.25 activity I maintain out of love for packet. This one is for North America:

With over 110,000 views in the last couple of years, I'd say there is a viable interest and resurgence in AX.25 packet.

You bring up some great questions. Packet has three great advantages over other digital modes: transparency,?error correction, and?automatic control. It is one of the first digital modes,?very easy to set up, variants of hardware and software are readily accessible, and makes a great "gateway mode" for beginners into other digital modes - and yes - it is nostalgic!

It's amazing how many VARA, IL2P and FX.25 advocates constantly feel they have to tell me that their modes are faster and better than AX.25. These "Jehovah Witnesses of Digital Modes" are absolutely correct! No argument from me. I applaud their inventors and innovations. These modes were not available to amateurs when AX.25 packet first came out. I think you see where I'm going with this...

As far as longevity, Network105 has been around since the 1980's and as long as there are TNCs, SoundCards and hams to operate them, I'm confident it will continue, just like slow-poke CW, RTTY, JS8Call, etc....

Building and maintaining networks are fun. I ran a very successful packet contest in February. I will be doing that again with a few things other packet events up my sleeve.

Most of my attempts to using 300 baud AX.25 on 20m and 40m bands have been unsuccessful. That's just a personal observation. I know this stuff works just fine for a lot of other people. I'm probably just unfortunate in where I live (Utah) in relation to the main centers of packet activity in the US. But I'd like to know why people are still using AX.25 when there are more robust protocols like Vara and Robust Packet around. Is this because lots of packeteers are still using old hardware TNCs? Nostalgia? I managed to connect right away to a node in Utah using Vara (NS7K is on 7.0934 USB and runs BPQ32 to support a few different ports for Vara and PACTOR on HF and VHF AX.25). AX.25 on the other hand has been a dead loss for me. I'm not trying to be a smartass here. It just seems to me that the network would survive longer if more people were able to participate, which would be facilitated by using more robust modes.

It brings back memories. My? first packet station not long after packet's inception, was the C-64, monitor, disk drive, and PK64 Packrat modem. I used it almost entirely on HF. NO internet then, and got a few games to play on it when I wasn't doing Packet. One memorable game was "Airborne Ranger". The graphics weren't super good quality, but for the time was just fine. It was our only computer, and I shared it with the kids when they were doing games with it.? I remember one weak point on the C-64, was the internal pwr supply. There was a fellow locally working out of his home that did Commodore service. I think I visited him for service on that pwr supply 2 to 3 times a yr. I did have it running almost 24/7 though.

Several evenings, I put the station in vhf mode and had? the system hooked? to a printer that would print everything that appeared on the screen in real time.? I set the freq. to monitor the "MIR" space station when it beaconed as it passed over. It would print the best passes of the night where it's pass angle was at it's highest point, since I was only using a vertical.?

?I did the print as a demo tool as a good visual representation on what packet could do.

Gary,
Adjust your radios RF Gain control down so the rx light only flashes once in an awhile, while still responding to received tones. ?Mine is usually adjusted so the S meter reads about an S3 setting, oh I almost forgot, make sure the AM/FM button is set to AM!
The FM setting is much more sensitive, try using FM setting with CD set to software,
But I prefer the AM mode with CD set to internal, YMMV!
