Checking remote ports
Hello group,
I have been working on my remote over the internet and have run into some mysteries. To test my path to the Quisk-remote software I have been trying to telnet? nn.nn.nn.nn port gvj@DLap:~$ telnet nn.nn.nn.nn 4585 Trying nn.nn.nn.nn... telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused gvj@DLap:~$ telnet nn.nn.nn.nn pppp Trying nn.nn.nn.nn... Connected to nn.nn.nn.nn. Escape character is '^]'. In the first case I was trying the command port for Quisk and was refused. In the second case I was telneting to my remote shack controller and was able to connect perfectly as I can for port 22 (ssh). I know that port 4585 works because I can connect remotely over the internet and apart from getting RF into my home network and dropping the command port it works 100% I am OK at QRP levels and strangely enough with CW. 73, Graeme ZL2APV Can anyone explain why I can't telnet to quisk on 4585/6/7 please? |
Re: Anyone using OS X and quisk?
I normally use "pip3" instead of "pip" but this may only be of concern

Re: Quisk Version 4.2.12 November 2022
Hi Jim,
For some reason this message was kept as draft, I wrote it a week ago... I modified a file from Ben at the Control Head end, and got sample rate working, as well as audio. Only the large screen functions work (very well!), the small screen hampers when it comes to the side bar, as mentioned before.? The "control_hiqsdr.py" is attached, I'm sure it can be improved, but it's a start ;-). 73s, Peter, PA3BIY |
Re: Anyone using OS X and quisk?
Quisk is easy to install on MacOS using Homebrew.
brew install [email protected] fftw portaudio pulseaudio sudo -H python3.9 -m pip install --upgrade quisk Run: python3.9 -m quisk 73, Jim N7IHQ |
Re: Latency constraints for remote operation?
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýThanks for clarifying ... and that is pretty consistent with my experience, using Quisk over network *or* just locally (no remote feature) ... I'm pretty sure this could vary some from computer to computer, and sound system to sound system, although with remote usage, the sound system buffer needs to additionally make up for any network jitter (but not average network latency) ... I have my Control Head Play Latency set at 30msec on a pretty fast Windows computer with WiFi connection to my local outdoor rig-in-a-box, which gives me an occasional crackle, but is mostly fine ... I used it all weekend in the CQWWDXCW contest (and it's amazing what 5 watts can do!? 400+ Qs in 78 different countries from East Coast USA). -- Ben, AC2YD -- On 11/30/22 03:21, Peter Hoefsloot

Re: Latency constraints for remote operation?
Hi Ben et al,
So there are several (UDP) ports open at 4G in the Netherlands. Among them UDP port 1194, which is used by openvpn. Over the past days I installed openvpn as a server on the odroid XU4 on which I also run Quisk. The client part of openvpn was installed on the control head of another Odroid XU4. And now magic: It runs over a MiFi link! Using only 20 ms buffer delay I can still not notice hick-ups, and the data consumption is roughly 56 kB (Bytes!) up and 38 kB down, so about 500 kbps of total data bandwidth usage. My round trip (ping) delay time to the MiFi is less than 50 ms, 32 ms average. So I am quite happy so far! 73s, Peter, PA3BIY |
Re: Latency constraints for remote operation?
Hi Ben,
I've found the reason why I can't connect over a MiFi: limited port access. The 4G providers here make only very few ports available (open), hence I will have to use some kind of tunnel. Initially I tried SSH tunneling, which worked but with a 10 s update timing of the graph :-(. So now I am in the process installing Openvpn, and will use port 1194 (UDP), as that port is open over 4G. I am not there yet, configuring openvpn takes more time than anticipated, but I will let you know when/if I succeed. 73s, Peter |

Are you using the latest Quisk?? I recently did some work on the network connection aspects (especially the "already in progress" issue); Jim released that work in the latest, 4.2.12. If you are already using 4.2.12 (or even if not), try starting the Remote Radio Quisk (making it available to connect) before starting the Control Head Quisk. -- Ben, AC2YD -- On 11/25/22 17:48, Peter Hoefsloot wrote:

Any cheap USB-Blaster clone will do. You will have to make up an adapter cable as shown in the picture.

It seems that all my ports are closed, in spite of the port forwarding. At least that explains why it does not work, not the "Why" they are closed. 73 Peter Op 25/11/2022 om 23:39 schreef Ben Cahill: Just an IP address, in format 123.45.67.89 ... no " or anything else. |

Yes, PW is set on both devices. The remote and local are both sitting on my desk, so initially I connected them to the LAN, and it worked. Next I connected the Remote to the MIFI and set the appropriate forwarding ("virtual servers"). There is 1 error on the Control Head: Remote Control socket.connect() error: [Errno 114] Operation already in progress There might be another issue: Blocked port ranges by my 4G Provider (T-Mobile). I ran into that a couple of years ago, but have not found a list (yet) of blocked ports. That's if T-Mobile is still blocking some ports.... 73s, Peter Op 25/11/2022 om 23:39 schreef Ben Cahill: Just an IP address, in format 123.45.67.89 ... no " or anything else. |
