Z100 Plus and FT-818 together

Jim Long

I assume I can use the Z100 Plus and the Yaesu FT 818 together but I need to put the radio and in CW, key down and hit the TUNE button?

Z-11 PRO II vs. AT-100 PRO II?

I'm comparing the Z-11 PRO II vs the AT-100 PRO II. ?My primary question is regarding the 0.1-125 watt rating of the Z-11 vs. the 1 to 125 watt rating of the AT-100. (I realize that the AT-100 can switch between two antennas, has the bargraph LED meters, slightly different power consumption and slightly different tuning times.)

What is the minimum power level needed for proper automatic antenna tuner operation for each tuner? ?Is the minimum auto-tuning level consistent with the lower number of the respective specification? ?Can the Z-11 auto tune with QRP at just .1 watts?

My primary application will likely be QRP with QRP Labs QDX (5 watts) on FT-8 and other digital modes and the QCX+ (5 watts) CW rig. ?Both of these QRP radios have 4 BS170 MOSFETs which are super sensitive to high SWR. ?I'm OK on 40m and 20m but on 80m and 30m the SWR is too high (>3:1). ?I was told to use a manual tuner that has a resistive bridge (like the EMTECH ZM-2 on order). ?It utilizes a built in 50 ohm bridge which means the SWR doesn't go above 2:1 when tuning, thereby saving my final MOSFETs.

Do the LDG tuners incorporate any type of resistive bridge or could there be quick transition times (milliseconds) white autotuning where the SWR goes high?

Thanks and have a great day! ?Ciao! ?73 ?Peter W1DAD ?Windham NH

Re: Cable for FTDX10 + Z11-Pro 2

I don't mean to stray too far from the original topic of this thread, but I have a related question.? I own a FT-DX10 and also have an old LDG YT-1200 which was oroginally designed to interoperate with Yaesu FT-DX1200, FT-DX3000 and some other Yaesu products of that generation.? I am wondering if the YT-1200 could be used with my FT-DX10 without much ado.??

I did glance at the CAT Reference guide for the FT-DX10 and the FT-DX1200 and it seems that the "antenna tuner control" commands are identical.? I suspect (but haven't confirmed) that other CAT commands that might be needed for this purpose are also common to the two radios.?

Any advice/suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks,

Carl K3RV?

FTDX10 and LDG RC-100 remote auto tuner

Ed Mohrman WA7EM

I use my FTDX10 with the LDG remote auto-tuner. I would like the "tune" button on the radio to trigger a low power CW signal to trigger the remote tuner to tune. Unlike conventional auto tuners sitting a few feet away from the radio, this tuner is 100 ft away. There is no interface cable between tuner and radio.

A clip of the FTDX10 schematic showing the tuner connector is attached. I think some pull-up or pull-down of one or more of these signals tells the radio that there is an external tuner attached and to to the low power CW thing. I am reluctant to just start driving some of these signals and hope that someone can guide me. I tried reverse engineering how other tuner/cable combos do this. But, it became guesswork

thanks

I learned today after having great talk with LDG representative, that such cable is only needed by 100 model. 200 and 600 Pro II does need it. I verified and it auto tunes. I was told that you need to limit radio power to 60 W only when doing data other then FT-8.

I noticed in your screen "as viewed from rear panel" of the FTDX10.
I want to be extra clear. The DIN connector is when looking INTO the LINEAR connector in the back the radio.

Re: Original LDG-1000

An LDG is a well-made top grade tuner.? No other brand or model can do better.

I don't know anything about your equipment or set-up, but I had a surprising-to-me experience with a different used LDG autotuner.? Mine was supposed to be compatible with my very new FT-991a for autotuning, but wasn't working. After lotsa checking and a few calls to LDG, the LDG owner/guru guessed that my ROM might be out-of-date so he sent me an updated ROM at no charge.? THAT solved my problem.

Open your tuner and copy down the numbers from the ROM (best to be looking inside when you call).? Call LDG and ask whether the ROM might be a problem.??
You could send your tuner to them for a check or repair as a last resort.??

FTDX10 and LDG 200 Pro II cable issue

Rob, W9LOT

Hello Guys,

?

I am trying to make this cable between both units since it is on long backorder. I got all the parts.

So few things:

?

1. Looks like Y-ACC-2 CABLE.PDF downloaded here from file LDG Cables 2022.zip located in the Files section shows pins between the mini DIN 10 and 3.5 stereo jack. Please note "DIN 10"

2. When I searched the DX website for LDG 200 Pro II unit I found Y-ACC-2 cable?showing compatibility with FTDX10 in the Specification section.

?

FTDX-10 AT-200ProII Connects to transceiver TUNER port, enabled in menu: Operation, General, Tuner Select, set to EXT. This action disables RS232C port.

3. The issue is that the above PDF shows DIN 10 whereas on FTDX10 there is mini DIN 8 (not 10), So the pin out from the above pdf is invalid since PIN 10 does not exist. You can google/images for FTDX10 back panel and see that it has 8 pins.

?

Can someone point me to a proper pdf file, please?

Also, please indicate when showing pins on DIN 8 connector, if the numbering is

1. When looking at the radio?

2. When looking into the cable?

3. When looking at the soldering side?

?

So I do not cross the wires.?

Winter Field Day is around the corner :)

Re: Original LDG-1000

I have a very similar setup (rig, ALS-1306, LDG-AT1000). I have a couple tips for you.
1) Turn off autotune on the tuner. Otherwise, it will try to tune at inopportune times. This means you need to hit the tune button to do a tuning cycle.
2) Make sure the runner is set to tune to 1.5 SWR.?
3) Tuning must be done at a low power (5-10 watts) and the amp's 'operate' switch turned off. Then after tuning, power up, amp on, and go!
4) You mentioned an antenna switch. The tuner does not know which antenna you may have selected. So if you switch antennas, the stored adjustments will not be correct!

1 and 2 above require button manipulation on the tuner, and I'm away from the station at the moment. If you can't figure it out, let me know and I'll look up the sequence.

Well, sorry your 1000 isn't working for you. I have both the 1000 and the 600. My 600 is used with my ALS-600 amp. It does a great job matching my inverted L antenna on most bands (40-10). Sometimes I need to touch up the tuning by experimenting with the "L" and "C". Sometimes just a couple of button pushes gets the SWR below 1.5. The tuners aren't perfect but, for the most part, both of mine handle the matches very well.

I have the same configuration as you:? transceiver -->Amplifier-->SWR Meter-->LDG600-->Antenna. I send 10 watts into the tuner and hit the "Tune" button (Long press). I hear the relays doing their thing and once it stops I look at the SWR. If it isn't satisfactory I give the "L" and "C" a few clicks UP or DOWN.

My tuners are both "PRO2" models (LDG-1000ProII & LDG-600ProII). No idea what the difference is, but obviously something was improved.

It's also possible that the ALS600's SWR sensing circuit is defective. This is the perfect place to have a dummy load. I have the MFJ dummy load () that is like a paint can full of oil with a big non-inductive resistor inside.

Is it possible that your SWR meter isn't correct? I have had quite a few auto-tuners in the past and they can be really flaky at times. It really does sound like something just isn't right with your ALS-600. I did have one instance of failure with my ALS-600. I was transmitting through the tuner, which showed an excellent match, and when I boosted power to get 500 watts out, the amp's finals self-destructed. It was repaired under warranty fortunately. My ALS-600 seems perfectly happy with 1.5 and even as much as 1.7.

I suggest giving Ameritron a call. It doesn't cost anything and the people who answer the phone are very knowledgeable and helpful.?

Another thought... Do you have a between the antenna and the tuner? Often, it can make a difference. Weird things happen on the feedline coax when it attempts to be part of the antenna.

Good luck with it & 73, Doug -- K0DXV

Re: Cable for FTDX10 + Z11-Pro 2

The FT-DX10 has a buuilt-in antenna tuning unit with a 16.5 to 150 ohm matching capability.?
The Z-11ProII has the same power rating but can handle a wider range of 6 to 1000 ohms.?
Make sure the FT-DX10's internal ATU is disabled when using the external tuner.?
See pages 54-55 of the FT-DX10 Operating Manual.
?
The FT-DX10 does not mention that it reduces power to an external tuner, although it may.?
The FT-857D manual mentions that power is reduced when TX-REQ is grounded, but does not specify the power level used.??
The FT-DX5000 has a separate TX REQ RCA jack. There is a menu for setting the power level when tuning.??
?
The Z-11ProII manual says to reduce power to 25 watts or less before manual tuning.??
Minimum power for tuning is not specified, but probably the same minimum 5 watts as the AT-200ProII specifies.??
My advise is to connect a HF RF? watt meter between the FT-DX10 and external ATU and measure the power used while tuning.??
If above 10 watts, manually adjust the transmit power below 10 watts before tuning, and remember to do that each time before tuning.??

Re: Original LDG-1000

With such a tight SWR requirement you would probably be better off with a manual tuner. LDG will be happy with matches that give 1.5 or better towards the amp so you would have to tweak things at times to make the amp happy.

Re: RC-600 Bias-T short circuit protection ?

Hi Al

nice idea
but
the complexity is due to the antenna MATRIX switch (WX0B design)... since it is a matrix (2x6) would need to have two sets and? system would need know which which one to use to feed the bias-t? on the other side......

That is why i decide install the bias-t on the coax line that is going directly out to the antenna after the matrix switch and to just power up the bias-t using remote control power plug...the matrix switch is 50ft away from the station just before all coax runs exit the house...antenna are, 8 el LPDA which is 100ft run and OCF which is 100 ft run, and the 43ft vertical where the RT600 will be located is 200ft run away....

The LPDA has shorting stub and OCF has balun both of which would be short circuits to the Bias-t...

i will be looking into the circuit of the matrix switch to see if i can pull off a 12vdc to power up bias-t when 43ft vertical is selected
it does lockout from both rigs try to access same antenna...first come first served logic...

thanks for the idea...
