Carlos Fuentes Coming to Orange County

Cesar A Cruz

FYI Only!

Libreria Martinez Books and Art Gallery is doing it again! We would
like to cordially invite you to perhaps the most extraordinary event
ever in the cultural life of Santa Ana, CA. We are thrilled to
announce that we will be presenting none other than the world-
renowned Carlos Fuentes!!

Carlos Fuentes is universally recognized as one of the most important
figures in Latin American literature today. He is undoubtedly
Mexico's most respected and widely read author along with Octavio
Paz. His writings have heavily influenced contemporary Latin American
literature.

His first published works were short stories, such as those in the
collection Los das enmascarados (The Masked Days, 1954). In 1958 he
published his first novel, La regin ms transparente (translated as
Where the Air Is Clear,1960), in which he bitterly indicted Mexican
society. The book established Fuentes's preoccupation with Mexican
history and national identity as well as his innovative use of
flashbacks, the thoughts of characters, and other experimental
techniques to build complex narratives.

He achieved international acclaim with the novel La muerte de Artemio
Cruz (1962; The Death of Artemio Cruz,1964), which tells the story of
a dying Mexican political boss agonizing over the immoral acts of his
life. Fuentes followed these books with many novels, including
Cambio del piel (1967;
A Change of Skin,1968), Terra nostra (1975; translated 1976),
El gringo viejo (1985; The Old Gringo,1985), and Diana, o, la
cazadora solitaria (1994; Diana, The Goddess Who Hunts Alone, 1995).

Fuentes continued to write short stories, as well as writing plays,
books of essays, and works of literary criticism, notably La nueva
novela hispanoamericana (The New Latin American Novel, 1969).

His brand new book, Instinto de Inez published this year by Alfaguara
will be available for purchase and signing. Don't miss this
once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet Carlos and to receive his
signature on your very own copy.

"El amor, como la pera, es hermoso, extrao, salvaje, convulsivo y
doloroso."

Carlos Fuentes will be at Libreria Martinez Books and Art Gallery on
Sunday, April 22, 2001 at 4:00pm. Libreria Martinez is at 1110 North
Main St., Santa Ana, CA, 92701. Telephone: (714) 973-7900 Fax:

VC FILMFEST 2001:
The Visual Communications Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film & Video Festival
May 17 through 24, 2001
Directors Guild of America, Japan America Theatre
At presstime, we are proud to announce that we have confirmed our Opening and
Closing Night films, they are:

Opening Night/May 17, 2001/Directors Guild of America
The Los Angeles Gala Premiere of
GREEN DRAGON (2001) by Timothy Linh Bui
(co-producer and co-screenwriter, THREE SEASONS)
Set in a Marine airbase circa 1975, GREEN DRAGON is a compelling story of
Vietnamese immigrants to America and of their experiences in military bases
intended as way-stations before being relocated to a new home—a 1970s version
of Ellis Island. The film, an official selection of the 2001 Sundance Film
Festival, is inspired by the experiences of director Timothy Linh Bui and his
brother, multi-award winning director Tony Bui (THREE SEASONS). The film is
executive produced by actor/director Forrest Whitaker (THE CRYING GAME,
WAITING TO EXHALE) and stars Whitaker, Hiep Thi Le (BUGIS STREET, HEAVEN AND
EARTH), Billinger Tran, Don Duong, and Patrick Swayze (DIRTY DANCING, GHOST).

Closing Night/May 24, 2001/Japan America Theatre
A Special rare showing of
FAREWELL TO MANZANAR (1976) by John Korty ("The Autobiography of Miss Jane
Pittman")
Based on Jean W. Houston's memoirs of her family's internment at Manzanar,
this well-regarded 1976 telefilm is perhaps the first-ever intimate portrait
of a Japanese American family and the physical and emotional sense of loss
due to relocation during WWII. The film stars Nobu McCarthy, the late, great
Yuki Shimoda, Akemi Kikumura, Clyde Kusatsu, and many others. Unavailable in
a theatrical version in over 25 years, we will be showing a newly-struck film
print for this special occasion, to draw attention to the importance of
preservation of our community's cinema heritage.

SYNOPSIS:

Hong Kong, present day. A streetwise young man becomes a bodyguard to score
quick cash. He soon befriends a once disillusioned mercenary determined to
begin life anew with the woman he just married. Although the two men find
themselves working together to foil an assassination attempt, their
partnership is short-lived: gradually and through uncontrollable
circumstances, they will unknowingly be propelled toward opposite sides of a
deadly confrontation.

Tsui Hark's action-packed thriller, TIME AND TIDE, marks Tsui's triumphant
return to Hong Kong's unique brand of high-octane filmmaking - a genre that
he helped define with such films as PEKING OPERA BLUES and A CHINESE GHOST
STORY. TIME AND TIDE was shown at the Venice and Toronto International Film
Festivals and just garnered 6 Hong Kong Film Awards nominations. This Spring
Tsui Hark will be the subject of several retrospectives in the U.S. including
TriStar's re-release of the classic ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA - Parts 1 (in
its original uncut version) and 2 and Subway Cinema's "Once Upon A Time In
Hong Kong: A Tsui Hark Retrospective" at the Anthology Film Archives in
Manhattan and the Plaza Twin in Brooklyn.

Produced by Columbia Pictures Film Production Asia, Sony Pictures
Entertainment's Asian production entity, TIME AND TIDE brings together one of
the world's most renowned producer-directors, the hottest young star in Hong
Kong music and film (Nicholas Tse), a rock n' roll icon from Taiwan (Wu Bai)
and one of Hong Kong most promising new talents, singer Candy Lo, who is
nominated for the Best Newcomer Award and Best Supporting Actress at the Hong
Kong Film Awards.

A brand name in international cinema, Tsui Hark is among the first corps of
Hong Kong filmmakers invited by Hollywood to share the dazzling magic of
their films with the world. His first two American projects, Columbia
Pictures' DOUBLE TEAM and KNOCK OFF, were worldwide hits. In addition, he
has over fifty Hong Kong titles to his credit, most of them local box-office
smashes as well as cult favorites around the world, including such milestones
as THE KILLER, A BETTER TOMORROW 1 and 2 and the CHINESE GHOST STORY series
(as producer), and PEKING OPERA BLUES, A BETTER TOMORROW 3, and the ONCE UPON
A TIME IN CHINA series (as writer/producer/director).

Special Thanks to TriStar Pictures, Laura Kim and Annalee Paulo/mPRm, AND CAPE

Laura Ashford at Cherry

Mary Leigh Cherry

As seen on the cover of "Off the Wall," in the 7days in LA of the New
Times and listed in Flaunt magazine...
don't miss

LAURA ASHFORD: MAGIC CHICKS
Fetishistic paintings and installation of magic women portrayed on
television

Cherry is pleased to present Magic Chicks by artist Laura Ashford. The
exhibition runs from April 14 through May 20, 2001. The opening
reception is Saturday, April 14 from 7:00 - 10:00PM.

Presented like a modern day Pantheon to TV deities, Magic Chicks offers
twenty-eight fetishistic oil paintings hung in linear filmstrip fashion
around the gallery. Laura Ashfords heavily varnished paintings depict
women from popular television series from 1964 - 2001, who for one
reason or another are endowed with magical powers. Some of the women
represented from earlier years are Samantha from Bewitched, both
Catwomen from Batman, Jeannie from I Dream of Jeannie, Isis, Wonder
Woman and even Sister Bertrille from The Flying Nun. The current
heroines are the likes of Xena, Buffy, the sisters from Charmed and Dark
Angel.

In this modern day temple installation, a theme song soundtrack resounds
as if in place of a cherubic choir and traditional alter flowers welcome
the viewer. The floor is lined with carpet and the gallery window bears
a double spiral time logo aluding to stained glass and designating the
years of "magic chicks" from 1964 until 1980 and then the resurgence
from 1994 until the present.

The time spiral logo articulates Ashfords theoretical investigation for
this exhibition. From 1964 until 1980, the American television audience
enjoyed many now iconographic "magic chicks". During the time period of
1980 until 1993, there was a black hole for the magic/fantastical
female character. In recent years (1994 until the present), America has
been given once again a new batch of modern day witches, warriors and
powerful sci-fi women. Many cultural and social questions are raised
from this disjointed timeline and from the display of a rarely
considered lineage of female heroines. Ashfords installation allows
room to ponder these questions, as well as provides a setting for
reverence, memory and consciousness on a mass and personal scale.

Laura Ashford lives and works in Los Angeles. Ashford received her BFA
from CalArts. She is a painter and also works as a high end visual
effects artist at Rhythm and Hues.

Announcing the fifth show of its second season, Cherry continues to
present emerging and mid-career artists and provide freedom for them to
consume the space and transform it to suit their expression.

The gallery is located at 2411 Glencoe Avenue at the corner of South
Venice Boulevard, five blocks east of Lincoln Boulevard. Hours are
Saturdays and Sundays 1-4 PM or by appointment.

Re: [LACN] LA Building & Safety Commission will schedule hearing on Ponce's Mural

Jason Elias

We at SEIU Local 347, the City Workers' Union that also represents
municipal inspectors, looked into what's going on with Hector's mural.
We talked with Andrew Edelman, the General Manager of Building and
Safety, and he is going to address the issue, not only through the
hearing, but also will personally investigate it with the inspectors
assigned to the job.

We suggest that people interested in getting this to a hearing as soon
as possible send an email or call Mr. Edelman's office (I will send you
the numbers and email as soon as I gather them). In the meanwhile, send
your letters or emails to SPARC.

We hope that Building and Safety will do the right thing and preserve
this beautiful work of art and statement of support for democracy and
indigenous rights. If there's anything else we can do in this struggle,
please don't hesitate to contact me.

LA Dept of Building & Safety declares Mural an "Illegal Sign"

viva Krasinski

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact: Viva Krasinski 310/822-9560 x11 viva@...

Hector Ponce?s Mural Depicting Emiliano Zapata and Chiapas Leader
Sub-Commandante Marcos Declared an "Illegal Sign" and Slated for Destruction
by the City of Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety

Hector Ponce?s mural, a symbol of the struggle for indigenous rights in
Chiapas, Mexico, depicting both Zapatista leader, Sub-Commandante Marcos and
Emiliano Zapata was painted at 6th and Westlake with the support of the
building owner. However, the City of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs
Department has destroyed the mural once before and recently threatened to do
so again, citing a complaint which they originally attributed to the
building owner but later was discovered to have been made by a neighboring
business. The Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety has now stepped
into the fray, declaring the artwork to be a "sign" painted without proper
signage permits and thus eliminated any need to notify the artist prior to
it?s destruction as is required by the Federal Visual Artist?s Rights Act
(VARA). Ponce?s mural is scheduled for immediate destruction by the
Department of Building and Safety. Their role as both the purveyors and
enforcers of ill-defined parameters between what constitutes art and what
constitutes signage borders on censorship.

--------------------
1. WHAT IS LA CULTURE NET?
LA Culture Net is a forum in which arts administrators, artists, and anyone passionate about the arts in Los Angeles County can communicate with each other. Originally launched by the Getty Center in 1995 in response to interest from local arts, cultural, and educational institutions, the listserv now exists on its own, with some support provided by the Los Angeles County Arts Commission. Appropriate postings include announcements of arts events, job listings in the field, and cultural policy discussions about all topics, including advocacy.

2. HOW DO I SUBSCRIBE/UNSUBSCRIBE TO LA CULTURE NET?
To subscribe, send an e-mail to <laculturenet-subscribe@...>. To unsubscribe, send an e-mail to <laculturenet-unsubscribe@...>. You may also modify your subscription settings, review archived messages, or take advantage of other Yahoo Groups features like chats, polls, and shared files (for download by members only) by going to the group website at <>. You will need a Yahoo account to take advantage of these features.

LA Culture Net discussion focuses on everything having to do with the arts. Feel free to introduce new topics and questions that serve your interests! Announcements of relevant programs or position openings are also welcome.

5. WHO SHOULD PARTICIPATE ON LA CULTURE NET?
LA Culture Net is open to anyone interested in the culture of greater Los Angeles: artists, museum curators, activists, programming staff from community organizations, librarians, archivists, and teachers in K-12 and higher education interested in using networks to access
cultural material for curriculum development and classroom instruction. LACN is an unmoderated list, and members are free to un/subscribe or post to the list without the moderator's approval. Only members may post to the list, so there should not be any outside spam posted to this list.

6. HOW MANY MESSAGES WILL I BE GETTING FROM LA CULTURE NET?
As of February 2001, there are about 350 subscribers. Traffic, or mail volume, varies but usually range from 10 to 15 a week. For your convenience, all messages sent to the new LACN address will be tagged with [LACN] in the subject line, so you can easily identify the e-mails sent to LACN-list. Based on common Netiquette and past problems with large unsolicited attachment files, all e-mail attachments sent to LACN will be automatically rejected.

7. WHAT IS THE PREFERRED FORMAT FOR MESSAGES?
First of all, always put your name and email address at the end of every posting, so that other subscribers can easily identify you. It also helps to use a meaningful subject heading, so that people can see if your message deals with a topic that interests them. For job announcements, please include the phrase <JOB:> in the subject heading. For event announcements, please include the phrase <EVENT:> In the subject heading.

Examples:
Subject: JOB: Bilingual archivist wanted in Orange County

Call for Performers

Michael Sakamoto

Interdisciplinary dance and performance artist Michael
Sakamoto is considering performers for a new dance
theater work to premiere this summer in Los Angeles.
The show will be a dark, visceral, absurd and comic
ride through the films, history and mind of the
diabolical Doctor Chi. Ideally, it is a subversively
pop examination of the line between benevolence and
destruction, control and chaos, beauty and madness,
intellect and irrationality. Artists with
movement/dance (especially butoh-influenced movement),
acting, improvisation and/or performance art skills or
training and a keen sense of humor are encouraged to
inquire at (310) 823-6389 or michaelsakamoto@....

"[T]he work you did with Robert Arroyo, Jr. and I on "Call the Sun Down"
was careful, incisive and with an eye toward recognizing and nurturing the
heart of each poem individually--as well as the collection as a whole."
-- Robert Wynne

"Lyrical acuity and intense musicality are hallmarks of Jamie O'Halloran's
work. Yet, still she captures her lush inner landscape with an economy of
language that speaks of a dedication to the fundamental principle of the
art form: make every word count. Reading her poetry is like seeing in
stereo--both halves of the brain respond to the deft nuances of her
syllables. "
--Robert Arroyo, Jr.

Line Dance is an exhibition of installation artists working with line.
This group show gives the public a different and often unseen view of
installation artists and their drawings or lines of poetry. The two
dimensional sides of three dimensional artists are exposed. Artists are
invited to treat the public to discovering another side of their visual
and/or written expression by sharing in the contemporary dialogue with either
preliminary drawings of their installations and/or drawings that have never
been viewed, representations of words in
any form -- written or spoken, hence the "line dance."
