Maybe Old Ray doesn't realize that the power limit on 30 meters is 200 watts in Canada and USA.

And 100 on 60 meters.

So why would Palstar build an illegal amp to sell in North America?

Come on Ray. At some point in time “common sense” and some experience and knowledge has to come into play here.

?

Good grief already. Give it up and stop knocking this amplifier and move on to supporting the amp of your choice in their forums and leave us alone.

Ok, Rick, VE3PP, I take that to mean - Yes - this is the online brochure you read, that resulted in you knowing "those bands were not covered."

Said LA-1K online brochure states "Frequency Range: 1.8 to 54 MHz" -- suggesting that the amplifier in question has a continuous frequency coverage from 1.8 MHz to 54 MHz -- it covers everything HF + 6M, even CB!

Sir, one can certainly interpret any given written material the way they see fit.

Me too and BTW it works fine on 30 meters. I us it a lot on FT8. 12 watts in 100 watts out. Both radio and amp are just cruising.

Purchasing equipment these days is much easier than when I started in the hobby 32 years ago!

I did plenty of research before I bough the amp. Same thing I do before I buy any new piece of amateur radio equipment.

Plus I had joined this group before I bought it and read through the posts.

And really, why are yo concerned? It's not your money I spent buying the amp.

Why would I worry about the lack of band selection for 60 and 30 meters when power output it limited on those bands?

I read the online brochure for the amp before I bought it and knew those bands were not covered.

Key word, READ.

To be clear, we do follow the power limits on the 60-M channels. However, on occasion (not often) ?MARS has permission to exceed the power limits for certain Exercises. In addition , we have several frequencies on that band in MARS that are not part of the designated 60-meter frequencies.

Just to recap, in your post /g/la1k/message/1513 you stated "Don't take this the wrong way Ray, but given the response is you shouldn't be using the LA-1K at all on those bands due to legal limits - 100W on 60m and 200W on 30m - I don't see any value of your request asking them to resolve it." and then you chose not to bug those guys, as I'd suggested in my post /g/la1k/message/1515, to learn why Mr. Mark Ward (Palstar's technician) thought my request's a valid one.

And now we have, Stephan's, N7QDZ, post /g/la1k/message/1516 pointing out in part, "It would be very helpful to have a 60-meter selection on the amp."? So, David, AF6HO, I hope you will eventually truly understand the value of my request as seen in my 7-Jun-2023 post /g/la1k/message/1316.

Re: LA-1K AUTOBAND change issue.

Stephan ...

I'm confused by your "its."? Can't figure out what the pronoun is referring to at times.

"when it tunes for certain frequencies" ... the amplifier doesn't tune for certain frequencies; it is broad-banded and simply picks the appropriate band-pass circuits.? It is the transceiver and the ATU that tune for certain frequencies.

"it sends power to the radio at the input rate" ... the amp doesn't send power to the radio, it is the radio that sends drive power to the amp.

"it senses high SWR" ... I presume you mean the amp.? What ATU are you using?

I have never used the amp on non-amateur frequencies and always assumed they were locked out.? But apparently there is enough overlap at the band edges to allow your operation on MARS frequencies.? I seem to recall (but could be wrong) that Palstar came up with a special firmware release for licensed MARS operators.? Send Mark Ward an email (engineering2@...) and see what he says.

Lastly, it is interesting that you can manually punch-in a given band and all is well.? That might indicate something is wrong in the band-data line.? I'd check the cabling on both ends.? Those are very
small conductors.

It is the band data line, but when it tunes for cetatin frequencies, it does not trigger the amp output. It sends power to the radio at the input rate, or around ?25-30W without any assistance from the amp. Basically, it senses high SWR. If I physically use a different band on the amp and retune, it works. This amp has worked well on most frequencies. There are just a few this effects, only on MARS frequencies and outside of the ham bands. The TX on the amp turns purple does not allow transmitting with power. For MOST frequencies it works just fine without issues. It seems to be from the 40-60M range.???????

Points well taken, David, AF6HO.? Lol.. Forget about the LA-1K, I use my Elecraft KX2 as a QRP exciter to operate on 5346.5 kHz USB with my Elecraft KPA1500 set to Band 5; staying well within the permissible 100W PEP ERP limit.? Oh btw, the integrated ATU of the KPA1500 even provides VSWR matching for my experimental 60M antenna, last year.
That's nice, but the LA-1K design doesn't lend itself to work with low power radios, as it requires more than QRP excitement to meet it's threshold.? I ran it at lower powers for some antenna configurations, but even at 5W drive you'd violate the 100W limit. I think 5W in ends up with ~150W+ out, and because of that you also would have very limited control to get it close to 200W without overrunning.? Also the LDMOS control voltage is fixed (Vd) at 50V, so you end up just wasting a bunch of input power, turned to heat, at the same time.? It's just not designed for this.

In terms of you not seeing any value of my request asking Palstar to resolve the issues, I'd suggest you contact Mark Ward?(Palstar's technician) directly so Mr. Ward can share with you why he thought my request's a valid one.? I'm just guessing now.. Palstar might have some challenges hiring and keeping talented STEM personnel after the COVID-19 pandemic to address various LA-1K issues in a timely manner.
I'll pass bugging those guys.? I do appreciate Mark, he's a great guy, he's intercepted many grouchy responses from Paul and turned them into positive outcomes.

In terms of you saying "I don't think vehicle makers should own responsible driving" I sure hope Mercedes' "DRIVE PILOT" operating under their stated conditions/environments would own responsible driving as a certified SAE Level 3 system for the U.S. market; please go to for details provided by said vehicle maker.
Eh? Off topic? I wasn't talking about self driving =)
