I love the amp also.? Run FT8 mostly with it and try to stay below 63C, so up and down on the input.? 15w in gives me about 350w out, also running 220v.? Running the amp into the Palstar Auto tuner and then 4 element SteppIR, so SWR is great on all bands!

It is my understanding from PalStar that the ICAS power rating is 1kw while the CCS rating is about 225W.? CCS is continuous 24/7.? Mine sits in a shelf with an exhaust fan in the back.? Works fine with Fldigi and WinLink VARA HF at 250-300W and stays below 60C.

Hi Bill. I run mine around 700w on rtty during contests without any problem. Been a rock solid performer for me. The highest temp it’s gotten to is 68C, then I back off a bit with the drive and TX, until it cools down to 60C. With lower output around 400w it stays around 55C-63C. There are 3 stages to the fan speed. It cools off quite fast.? I use 220v for my amp. It’s got many hard hours on it and very pleased with its performance.?

?

I don’t ever overdrive it. 50w max drive or 40amps max (appears on the panel).?

Panel is very useful for swr, power and temperature.?

It’s been a workhorse as I turn it on nearly every day for the past 5 years.?

La-1K hanging in transmit

Derwin Ferrell-N4FRL

I just developed a problem for some unknown reason. Every band every transmission when I unkey thr LA-1k will remain in transmit and kills my receive of course. SWR 1.2 and display shows TX AMP but no power is coming out. Must me sensing a marginal ground some where. Before I contact Palstar I thought I would try and see if anybody has any ideas. Placed dummy load on each coax port and does say thing. Got a OVERDRIVEN error a couple of times using a 20 watt qrp rig for the exciter. Replaced PTT key line. Dont use a ALC line.

Thanks

Re: Palstar LA-1K and Heavy Duty Cycle Activity

Ok Very good!
TNX for thinking about it. I am really bummed, not about the AMP. Its amazing, but about the fact that my Barrett wont drive it correctly. I know? I could work around it, but I was trying to get by on the cheap. Barrett has a 1k amp that will do the job perfectly but they cost about 30k!

Re: Palstar LA-1K and Heavy Duty Cycle Activity

I had the LA-1K for about 2 years. ?It ran great with my 101MP. ?It was paired with the HF-AUTO tuner.
The 1K is a solid performer for sure.
I fashioned a cable from the 101MP to the LA-1K to inform the LA-1K about band information.
That worked very well. ?The 1K would follow the 101MP should I change bands.
?
My only tribulation with the LA-1K was the "one speed on full fan" and its noise.
It has found a new home, ?and the new owner is also very happy with it.
?
I now am running the RF-Kit RF2K-S amplifier which is full legal limit and is essentially quiet.
My current setup is the ANAN G2 (THETIS SOFTWARE) ?<-> RFKIT RF2K-S <-> FLEX TUNER GENIUS <-> FLEX ANTENNA GENIUS> to 3 antennas
These make a remarkable tower of power which employs "pure signal" so no spurious transmissions nor over driving.
?
BTW, my HF-AUTO is available should any of you need a self "present" for Xmas.

Hi Bill,
I have a brand new LA-1K that I would be willing to part with. I have had it a few months, and It does not really do what I need it to do. I am a HAM, But I am not really very active on HAM Radio. I do mostly Military and commercial operating. I use a Barrett 4050 SDR commercial HF radio and I operate ALE. For some reason my LA-1k doesn't like my Barrett. The Barrett doesn't use a traditional ALC circuit. The Barrett tends to over drive the amp and it shuts down. I have no way to control the drive level on my Barrett except to reduce the RF PWR level in watts. I end up running my radio on low pwr. But then I get distorted audio rprt's from RX stations. I tried the amp with my Icom F8101 and it works great! I can adjust the ALC and AUDIO drive on the Icom. Are you interested in the idea of buying one that is very slightly used? I am a sales rep for Royal communications (the Barrett distributor for the US) and my reputation is very important for my sales work. I will give my word that this amp is 100% operational and not a scratch on it.

Re: Used La1K

David,

I have experienced a problem with a failed power output device that allegedly was due to improper torquing of the device to the heat sink. Palstar replaced the failed power device for free and reworked the unit, and I think I paid return shipping or something like that (about $25). In any event, it was a very fair arrangement. If the unit you are looking at works now, and it is from 2019, the chances are it is in good shape. For me, it has been a "go" or "no go" type of device; there is no grey operational zone.

The plus side is that Paul, the president of Palstar, and the staff there are great albeit a little overworked. I highly recommend the amplifier. I have other of their products, and, as a formed RF design engineer, I can tell you that their products are well done. As far as service is concerned, you know the old saw, you can have it done well, done fast, or done cheap, but your can only pick two of the three options. My service has been done well and at a fair price, so if you need service, prepared to be patient. In my experience, it took twice as long as I expected to get the unit back (6-8 weeks), but it was worth it.

Good luck,

Bob, N3BD
